Hello Lionesses

I hope all your districts got some much needed rain this past week. It was lovely but not

nearly enough unfortunately.

I’m combining the August and September reports for this newsletter.

Shoalhaven Club has spent 60 hours

making Charity quilts and helping at the Salvation Army. I hope the Ladies Luncheon was a great success. I

always look forward to attending but unfortunately had 2 other activities on that same day.

Over July and August Shoalhaven Lionesses collected 1161 pairs of spectacles. Thank you so much.

Eden Lioness Club have catered for a Legacy lunch and a funeral, worked at Anglicare, St Vincent's and BUPA

aged care. Well done Eden members.

Liverpool City Lioness Club knitted 20 trauma teddies and delivered them to Liverpool Ambulance Station.

What a thoughtful way to help sick and injured children. They also spent 40 hours volunteering at the Liver-

pool Hospital Craft Stall and collected 238 pairs of spectacles, great work Liverpool ladies.

Oak Flats Lioness Club have also collected stamps, corks and spectacles, worked at Cancer Council Relay for

Life and spent 28 hours knitting for cancer patients and underprivileged children. A great job Oak Flats.

Wollongong Heights Lioness Club have also been knitting for the homeless and for premi babies, collecting

stamps and spectacles and working at the Wesley Craft Shop and the Red Cross Shop. They assisted the elderly

by entertaining them line dancing and at a Seniors Day providing a trading table. Well done Wollongong

Heights Lionesses.

Camden Lionesses presented a Freedom Wheels bike to a beautiful 12 year old girl in Cobbitty. Maliyah was

over the moon with her new bike, so much so she made 3 dozen cakes for our recent cake stall. Macarthur Soft-

ball season is starting up so our Club will be doing the canteen and bbq for the players. Camden Lionesses have

helped at Narellan Lions Car Show, Unlock Camden for Camden Council, Meals on Wheels, Legacy and main-

tained Camden Hospital Palliative Care Garden. Our craft stall has gone on line and sales are continuing.

Well done Camden Club.

The North Canberra Bears Football Club

The North Canberra Bears Football Club invited Belconnen Lions Club to collect donations at their last six home games. It was agreed that money raised would go to assist the Special Care Nursery at Calvary Hospital. Generous support from patrons saw $2000 collected, this money will allow the nurses to purchase a mobile monitor which will assist them when the ward is in high demand.

LIONS NSW/ACT SAVE SIGHT & HEALTH CARE FOUNDATION

ANNUAL COMMUNITY CHALLENGE FINAL 2019 – 2020.

Lion Jo Brotherton

District 201N1

Lion Norm Fountain

District 201N2

PDG Bob Smith

District 201N4

On the evening of Saturday, 24th August the Lions NSW/ACT Save Sight & Health Care Foundation Community

Challenge Dinner and Entrant Final was held at the Bankstown & District Sports Club, Bankstown.

The overall winner of both the Charity Award and the Lions Community Service Award was Lion Norm Fountain, Crookwell

Lions Club representing District 201N2. A cash prize of $3,000 is paid to the winner of each Award. Lion Norm was a well de-

served recipient of both Awards.

Firstly, allow me to tell you a little about the Foundation and the Community Challenge.

We encourage female or male citizens, 18 years of age, and over to accept a challenge to make a difference, by working actively

within their community to organise fundraising and other events for the Lions NSW-ACT Save Sight & Public Health Care

Foundations, while promoting our aims, objects and purposes along with the work, service and history of the foundations, the Li-

ons Eye Bank and the Save Sight Institute.

We were extremely fortunate this year to have Three Districts, N1, N2 and N4 each represented by a quality entrant who worked

tirelessly throughout their community promoting the Foundations, their objects and accessibility across NSW and the ACT and

raising funds in support of the Foundation. A total amount of in excess of $29,000 was raised by the three entrants. This out-

standing result made the judging tight as time and effort given by each entrant was outstanding.

During the afternoon each entrant was interviewed by a committee who sought their knowledge of the Foundations, the

multiple aims, goals and purposes which include raising funds to finance the ongoing & benevolent work of the Foundations.

Judging is also on effort the way they and their communities raise their money.

President of the NSW/ACT Save Sight & Health Care Foundation, PDG Phil Bauer acknowledged the time and effort given by

each entrant and thanked them for their outstanding contribution.

Janeen and her Wheelchair –

a Heartfelt and Heart Warming Tale

By Janet Faes – her daughter and Kambah Lions Club Member

Janeen was an independent woman, always off doing something. When she retired, she got bored and joined up with the lo-

cal Lions Club – Kambah Lions - to meet new people and fill in her days. Well, she certainly filled in her days. Within

months of joining up, Janeen volunteered regularly for the Friday Bunnings BBQs, put her hand up to be Treasurer for Lions

Youth Haven (Farm Skills program and working farm run jointly by local Lions Clubs) and took up the challenge of running

the Christmas raffle for the Club.

This all changed on Sunday 16 December 2018. Janeen spent the day running around (checking raffle tickets at the gift

wrapping stall etc) but after dinner she suffered a stroke. She felt fine, she looked fine (to her) but when I asked her to smile,

the left side of her face was droopy. She told me off for calling the ambulance, was embarrassed when they came to help her

and even walked out to the ambulance telling all the neighbours I was a worry-wart. But things took a drastic turn the next

day with Janeen suffering a further massive stroke which left her paralysed on her left side. Sunday 16 December was the

last day Janeen walked and the last day she used her left arm.

As Janeen now required full time care, her family made the heartbreaking decision to move her into a nursing home. But we

didn’t give up on her. While we saved up for an electric wheelchair, we hired a chair so Janeen could be moved around the

nursing home and out into the real world. We also found her the most wonderful physiotherapist who specialised in brain

damage and stroke survivors and could come to the home to work with her.

So many changes in Janeen’s life, the loss of her home, the loss of her independence, the loss of her choice of what to do

when she wants to. Being in a manual wheelchair, Janeen was at the mercy of over-worked, under-staffed care workers. She

would spend hours stranded wherever she was left. She was forgotten, never included in activities around the home and she

couldn’t make her own way to them.

Then our local Lions Club stepped in, through support and funding obtained from the Lions Club of Canberra Kambah, the

Australian Lions Foundation and the Lions NSW/ACT Public Health Foundation, as well as a co-contribution from the fam-

ily, Janeen now has an electric wheelchair.

Ahh, the freedom, Janeen has had this chair for several weeks now, we go in to visit her and she is off somewhere… rolling

around the local lake, visiting her friends in other parts of the building, joining in for one of the activities or sitting in one of

the lounges enjoying the sun through the window. Janeen is also able to travel to the physio office during the week to take

advantage of more of the equipment. She has a bounce in her step (metaphorically), a weight has lifted off her shoulders and

she is revelling in her new found freedom, I think I’m going to have to put a GPS on her chair so it’s easier to find her.

She thanked the members of the Kambah Club and the Foundations when she attended a recent Club Meeting – giving a

demonstration of the wheelchair to all members there.

Lions gave this to her, and I can never say thank you enough for giving me back a little bit of my mum.

Lionsonoz in Action

Australian Lionsonoz, although not conducting projects themselves, due to the fact that their members can be located in any

state of Australia at any one time, are still very community conscious and endeavour to assist “main stream” Lions clubs in the

towns in which they find themselves.

However two Lions projects, the collection of used postage stamps and used spectacles are

encouraged because they can be accomplished anywhere Lionsonoz members happen to be and

there is no direct cost or fund raising associated with them.

The used stamps are sold and the proceeds are used to help fund the Australian Lions Children’s

Mobility Foundation (ALCMF) primarily set up to provide walkers for children suffering from

mobility problems, mainly Cerebral Palsy.

The collected used spectacles are cleaned and graded and through Lions Recycle for Sight

Australia Inc are distributed to people in need, mainly in developing countries in the third world.

Both these projects are strongly supported by Lionsonoz.
