Then he said to his disciples, "The har-vest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38therefore(B) pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to(C) send out laborers into his harvest." Matthew 9:37-38 (ESV)37(A)

How God called me:

In 2006, my 26 year old brother was met with an untimely death. As I sat at his funeral having no idea how to emotion-

ally deal with such a traumatic event, God spoke to me. He settled my spirit by letting me know that this tragedy was going to cata-pult me into my calling. “Odd,” I thought. How can my baby brother being mali-ciously murdered on a desolate street in the Parramore area be used to the glory of God? Conceptually this made no sense. I argued with God as I saw my broth-er's lifeless body lay in that casket before me. “There was no way a rainbow could come after this storm. This situation was just too bleak. This heartache was just too heavy.” I then learned the valu-able lesson. This is when God does his best work; when it looks like all hope is gone.

Suddenly, I heard God's voice again “What the enemy meant for evil, God means for good”. So I said to myself “self, I am going to be obedient.” I didn't really know what that exactly meant, but I knew I was going to somehow be a messenger of hope to a people who were starving for the Word. The tragic passing of my younger brother forced me to stop running from the calling to spread the Word of God. It reminded me that life was too short to waste Godly time. It reminded me that tomorrow may never get here. It most importantly reminded me that there is an entire generation of people that have in their possession a first class ticket to eternal damnation and it would be redeemed

soon if I didn't let God use me. I had to stop running. I had to surrender and respond to the Call of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. So on the day my brother was ushered home, I found new life through his death.

Consequently, after the day that I real-ized there was this “calling” on my life to do ministry, I realized something else even more simplistic yet still profound. I learned that I am not that special. The Lord didn't just call me to do his work but in fact God calls each and every one of us who are in the Body of Christ. The mandate from the master did not just come to those who stand in the pulpit on Sunday. The call of ministry is on us all. Just as your pastor may speak on

Sunday morning about the Kingdom of God being at hand, you as a part of the Body of Christ have the responsibil-ity to do the same. You are tasked with

saving souls, spread-ing the good news, and

helping usher souls into the Kingdom. That's my job. That's your job. That’s the role of a minister. Matthew chapter 9:37-38 clearly tells us that “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his har-vest.” So, I encourage all readers of this arti-cle not to delay; answer your God ordained assignment when ministry calls. As for me, answering the call to ministry will not bring my brother back to life, but I am convinced it will bring life to oth-ers. So Christians, let’s get to work. Ministry is calling.

IN THIS SEASON OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO KNOW THE WORLD IS WATCHING YOU?

i’ve been going over that now for the last few weeks; especially when they announced Leandria the winner. it’s been really awesome; kind of an exuberant feel-ing, a satisfaction that God has met my desire. God will give you the desires of your heart. i have longed for such a time as this. Watching all of the celebrities at the stellar Awards, i always thought that one day i would be there.

DID YOU GROW UP SINGING IN CHURCH?Yes, in the Church of God in

Jacksonville, Florida. i was raised in the church. i started singing at the age of 9 in the sunday evening services. When i became a teenager i orga-nized a quartet group called the Cosmopolitan Gospel singers at the age of 16. people would follow us. Many didn’t have cars in those days but you could see people coming down the road.

HOW OLD ARE YOU NOW?79.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE COMPETING ALL OF THOSE WEEKS?

it was glorious. The only thing that got me was the songs they gave me. i knew them, but they rearranged them right

there. Like Yolanda Adams’ song, “The Battle is Not yours.” if anyone noticed, i cut in half way and stopped. They do half of the songs, they don’t do all of them.

DID YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SELECT ANY OF THE SONGS THAT YOU SANG?

No, they wouldn’t let me select the songs.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO EVEN ENTER THE COMPETITION?

My spiritual daughter. The Thursday before the 31st of March, she told me to go down to 12th and Arch and audition. i said “for what?” she said “for sunday Best.” i said “me, i’m 79?” she pleaded

with me to try it and i just believe God was in it all. He orches-trated it all. i wish i could tell you what He set me up for. The judges were saying,

“You got a standing ovation from us, but most of all you got a standing ovation from Heaven.” That let me know God sent me there for a purpose. A gentle-man came to me while i was there and said “i enjoyed your singing, but you took my mind back to where it used to be.” i thought that was awesome to say, because God is saying to the singers, they need to get holy and righteous. The heavenly choir sang under the anointing of God and people were slain.

WHEN BET CROWNED ORLANDO’S LEANDRIA JOHNSON AS THE SUNDAY BEST FOR SEASON 3; STANDING IN THE SHADOWS WAS AN ANOINTED, STATELY GENTLEMAN WHO HAD TAKEN THE WORLD BY SURPRISE AT THE AGE OF 79. ELDER GOLDWIRE MCCLENDON OF PHILADELPHIA IS NOW KNOWN AROUND THE GLOBE AS THE FIERY FINALIST WHO BROUGHT THE HOUSE

DOWN WEEK AFTER WEEK; DANCING, PRAISING AND SINGING HIS WAY TO THE NUMBER TWO SPOT ON THE NETWORK’S GOSPEL COMPARI-SON TO AMERICAN IDOL. IN A RECENT VISIT TO ORLANDO FOR A CONCERT WITH SUNDAY BEST WINNER, LEANDRIA JOHNSON AND 3RD PLACE WINNER DURWARD DAVIS, ELDER GOLDWIRE MCCLENDON SAT DOWN WITH GOSPEL NOW TO SHARE HIS EXPERIENCE THROUGH-OUT THE COMPETITION. HE HAD BEEN CELEBRATED BY SUNDAY BEST JUDGES AS THE MAN WHO MAKES HEAVEN STAND; AND DURING THE CENTRAL FLORIDA CONCERT, MORE THAN 1,000 PEOPLE AT THE HQ MINISTRIES CHURCH IN ALTAMONTE JOINED HEAVEN IN A STANDING OVATION FOR GOSPEL’S GOLDEN GREAT, ELDER GOLDWIRE MCCLENDON. - BY RHIELLE DAVIS

YOU ARE VERY ARTICULATE AND WELL POISED. Well, thank the Lord. i didn’t want to talk like my

peers. My father being a minister didn’t allow us to go to the movies. When my father got married again, his wife had a daughter 2 years older than me and my brother. she begged him to let us go to the movies with her. He fi nally consented. When i got there, there was an English picture playing. i was carried away with their phrases and dialect. i said “WOW, i want to talk like that.” Many people from the islands would say “Hey, i detect you are one of us.” i had to tell them, “no, i was born in Jacksonville.”

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF GOING FROM HERE?i see myself recording. Bishop David Evans is going

to manage me.

WHILE YOU WERE THERE, I’M GOING TO GUESS THAT YOU WERE ONE OF THE OLDEST CONTESTANTS?

i was the oldest.

DID YOU FIND YOURSELF MAKING DEPOSITS IN THE LIVES OF THE PARTICIPANTS?

That’s what the Lord set me up for. When i left philadelphia, my children said “dad when you get there, don’t preach, sing.” i was number 20; all 19 of the peo-ple in that top 20 needed ministry. They would knock on my door. i would pray with them. i ministered to all of them. One day, in rehearsal a girl was sitting next to me and she began to ask me questions. i began to tell her what the Word says. The band leaders put their instruments down and got a chair, including Kim Burrell and they sat right in front of me. i got a chance to min-ister to them and i believe the Lord set me up for that.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS WITH BET’S SUNDAY BEST. WE’VE ENJOYED YOUR SINGING AND TIME OF MINISTRY AND JUST WATCHING YOU OVER THE WEEKS THAT YOU HAVE BEEN ON BET. THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU HAVE GIVEN TO US.

We all choose paths in our life. When walked regularly, these paths develop a groove. Now, getting into a groove is not all bad. You develop your groove to allow you to function with some level of comfort and ease. Often in this time the sun seems brighter, your steps are sure, and it feels like nothing can spoil your flow. Then, out of nowhere, rain comes. It's not just rain, but a deluge (when it rains it often pours). But make no mistake about it...the rain must come to challenge you to move out of your groove. Why? Because if you walk in a groove too long, the path becomes worn down. Deeper and deeper... Lower and Lower! Before you know it your groove has become a rut. You have traveled a path for so long and it has worn down so far that you are now looking up and asking yourself, "How did I get in this deep?" Once you are in a rut, the way up and out seems next to impossible.

In those times I believe God sends us coaches to push us just a little harder...to challenge us just a little bit more. Do not be discouraged that these coaches do not and can not just reach in and pull us out. Doing that would be a great obstruction to our overall development. In that moment, what we view as such a blessing would in fact be a dangerous disservice. To simply pull us out of our rut would rob us of the experience and the strength that is to be gained in the struggle to come out. It would also rob us of the wisdom that keeps us from getting back in the same rut again.

Like any muscle, the heart needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients that are carried to it by

the blood in the coronary arteries. When the coronary arteries become narrowed or clogged and cannot supply enough blood to the heart, the result is Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). If not enough oxygen-carrying blood reaches the heart, the heart may respond with a pain called angina. The pain is usually felt in the chest or sometimes in the left arm and shoulder. (However, the same inadequate blood sup-ply may cause no symptoms, a condition called silent angina.)

When the blood supply is cut of com-pletely, the result is a heart attack. The part of the heart that does not receive oxygen begins to die, and some of the heart muscle may be permanently damaged.

CHD is caused by a thickening of the inside walls of the coronary arteries. This thickening, called atherosclerosis narrows the space through which blood can flow, decreasing and sometimes completely cutting off the supply of oxygen and nutri-ents to the heart.

Atherosclerosis usually occurs when a person has high levels of cholesterol, a fat-

like substance, in the blood. Cholesterol and fat, circu-lating in the blood, build up on the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries and can slow or block the flow of blood. When the level of cholesterol in the blood is high, there is a greater chance that it will be

deposited onto the artery walls. This process begins in most people during childhood and the teenage years, and worsens as they get older.

In addition to high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure and smoking also contribute to CHD. On the average, each of these doubles your chance of develop-ing heart disease. Therefore, a person who has all three risk factors is eight time more likely to develop heart disease than someone who has none. Obesity and physi-cal inactivity are other factors that can lead to CHD. Overweight increases the likelihood of developing high blood cholesterol and high blood pressure, and physi-cal inactivity increases the risk of heart attack. Regular exercise, good nutrition, and smoking cessation are key to controlling the risk factors for CHD.

Research on coronary heart disease (CHD) has con-tributed to the decline in cardiovascular disease morbid-ity and mortality that has occurred during the past three decades in the United States. However, life expectancy and rates of illness and death from CHD have not im-proved as much for blacks as for whites. Blacks have not experienced the full benefit of research advancements for a variety of reasons, including insufficient scientific data, lack of research focused on minority populations, and limited access to health care resources and tech-nology. Consistent and universally accepted racial and ethnic categories have not been established, and defi-nitions may vary according to the social and scientific context. The limited data base currently available leaves a number of paradoxes unresolved. Controversy re-mains, in particular, regarding both chest pain and sud-den death. Available data indicate that the probability of dying from CHD is greater in black Americans than in white Americans and that there is a higher prevalence of smoking, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in blacks. Blacks are also less likely to receive coronary angiography or coronary revascularization.

Although major advances in therapy for CHD have occurred in recent years, few data are available on the clinical value, effectiveness, and efficacy of newer thera-peutic modalities in blacks. Innovative therapeutic ap-proaches to CHD have been based on data obtained primarily in white male populations. Blacks, especially women, are at greater CHD risk. Therapeutic algorithms focused primarily on the relief of chest pain have been refined in majority populations, but other algorithms may be more efficacious in populations with higher prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and differing clini-cal presentations. Although information regarding the interactions of LVH, hypertension, and CHD has in-creased, there are few data in blacks.

Let’s get healthy, one day at a time!

Kids Beating Cancer is calling on all Churches in Orlando to step

up and beup and beup potential marrow donors, allowing your congregation

the opportunity to join the national Marrow Registry.

For thousands of children and adults battling leukemia,

lymphoma, sickle cell anemia and other life-threatening diseases,

a marrow transplant offers their best – or only – hope for a cure,

75% of these patients, however, will not have matching donors in

their families. They depend on Kids Beating Cancer and the Be

The Match Registry, the world’s largest and most diverse listing

of potential marrow donors, to find that life saving match. The

tissue types used for matching patients with donors are

inherited, just like our eye color and skin tone, so patients are

most likely to find a match within their own racial or ethnic

heritage. That means adding more racial and ethnically diverse

donors to the registry – increases the likelihood that all patients

will find the donor they need. African American patients have

only a 1 & 10 chance of identifying a life saving donor. Kids

Beating Cancer is trying to improve the odds by offering FREE

testing to all who would like to stop the needless dying. If you are

between the ages of 18 & 60 and in general good health, can give a

simple cheek swab lab test, and fill out a brief health history

questionnaire, you could help save a life.

T hese days it seems, everyone’s seeking solutions for crises near and far: our political leaders in Washington, our state and local community lead-

ers – even the “scholars and experts” amongst us seek answers to the question – how do we turn our com-munities around? There’s a lesson to be taken from the Tri-Counties of polk, Highlands, and Hardee counties’, Community Outreach partners in Action (COpiA) under the watchful eye of Ms. shirley Dewdney. Ms. Dewdney retired from the insurance market after 35 dedicated years of service; but never lost her zeal to give back to others. “COpiA immersed from the spiritual fervor that’s so prominent at Hurst Chapel AME Church. inspired by the desire to serve, a group of reliable and dependable community partners with a goal of helping others, and a mission servant hood, were brought together by the hands of God.” Ms. Dewdney makes it clear, “this is not of my own doing.”

This service to others comes to life in the Annual Health and Wellness Extravaganza, saturday August 3, 9a – 3p,

500 3rd street Northwest, Winter Haven, Florida, across from city hall. “We’re here to serve our most important resource – our people. in these times of escalating lev-els of stress, high jobless rates, and questionable access to health care, we wanted to show our community that we can do something to help each other,” states Ms. Dewdney. “Our sponsors represent large and small busi-nesses, various local and statewide organizations – cover-ing hospitality, education, grocers, health, public safety, and so much more. We are serious about helping our folks through this storm.”

surrounded by 15 committee members, with at least nine community sponsors and several area partners Ms. Dewdney hopes their programs for all ages will provide information, health screenings, prizes, food, and of course neighborly camaraderie. in the midst of the festivities don’t lose sight of the fund-raising eff orts which serve their causes to include mammogram testing. “We’re doing it big including a grand fashion show with beauti-ful models who are also cancer survivors, as well as giving school supplies to our community leaders of tomorrow.” With joy she states: “many hands make light work.” in my small focus i stated that’s so good…she replied oh no, take one of those “O’s” out and what do you get?” i hum-bly replied, that’s so God!

A house divided will never stand. Three counties united will survive thanks to community volunteers such as those in COpiA.

INSPIRATION † LIFESTYLE † PURPOSE † FASHION

God created man in his own image, in the image of God cre-ated he him; male and female created he them. Genesis 1:27

Like everything in life, fash-ion trends come and go. Men’s trends have tradi-

tionally been on a longer cycle than women’s, giving us the abil-ity to more easily keep our closets in style. And, while men’s trends are moving faster and faster the changes tend to be more subtle from year to year.

From white wing collars to retro-influenced trends, men's fashion has been born, changed, and reborn time and time again. The colors, fabrics and patterns are constantly reappearing as men's positions in society are altered, especially in the Christian arena.

Many men in the gospel music industry have truly “AMPED UP” the fashion microphone, by wearing plaids and stripes together with a fat knot tie under a slim-style suit or a V-Neck fitted tee with fitted denim jeans and over-sized eyewear.

Who Said A Christian Man’s Style Had To Be Boring??!!

Whether it’s for work, play, Christian social networking scene or church, the world of men's clothing has started to wake up and realize that men don't just want bland grey suits and blue polo shirts, every man should have the perfect look no mat-ter what the occasion is.

It is my belief that men should have a resource available to them that helps to cultivate a stylish, unique personal image that is memorable and tasteful.

Here Is Some Fashion Food For Thought:

As with all things, this is a gen-eral guideline, not a hard rule. A man should never give up on style. Go forth in style and remem-ber, whatever your personality is, wear it boldly with no apologies!!

When it comes to fashion and style, no MAN should be left behind!

If you would like more information on enhancing your man-style, personal shopper, custom designed clothing

or just overall advice on fashions for men, I recommend the following male

GIVE ME A LITTLE OF YOUR BACKGROUND. HOW LONG HAVE YOU’VE BEEN A PASTOR?

I ’ve been in [pastoral services] for fourteen years, and in ministry for about seventeen. i got saved

in 1989, and i hadn’t been to church more than fi ve times in my life. i was just 19 years old. i had no real church experiences. i came straight off the streets. But that gave me the benefi t of coming with a fresh hunger. i was open to new information because i didn’t know anything.

DESCRIBE THAT MOMENT YOU HAD YOUR CALLING TO PASTORAL SERVICES AND THE FEELING YOU EXPERIENCED.

F irst thing i did when i got saved was [attend] Towson state University in Maryland. My fi rst

degree is in Accounting, with a minor in Business Management. i was under the impression that God told me to go to school to be an accountant. But i discovered later that God really sent me for disci-pline, to begin a regimen. A regimen of daily reading and studying that required a certain level of focus. so, while in my second year of college, i signed up to go to Bible College. i actually went to two colleges simultaneously. The other was Maranatha Bible College. it was while i was in Bible College that the pastor came to me and laid hands on me, feeling that i should do more in the church. i was amenable to this because it was at my local church. in my fourth year of college, the pastor came to me and said he felt i needed to go out and be a pastor. My response

was like “Man, i thought i was supposed to be here to help you” (he laughs). i resisted because that fi st year, i basically was under the impression that i was called to assist and not pastor. A year later after that experience, God began to speak to me and say “No, i want you to go out. You served at this [local] church for seven years faithfully, and i want to open this door of opportunity to you. And if you obey me and step out by faith, i’ll bless you." i think one of the biggest challenges of obeying that calling was that i left Baltimore, where i had family and friends and history; and came to Orlando where i had nothing but faith. i had only been to Orlando once, and that was to go to Disney World.

DESCRIBE THE FOCUS OF YOUR MINISTRIES?

T he focus of our ministry is to build people of purpose, prayer, and power. Our whole pur-

pose is to edify the body. We believe in ministering to the total man…spirit, soul, and body. Jesus said “i came to give life." so, rather than focusing on just the negative, we choose to be a positive infl uence in the lives of those God sends to us. Of course, we preach a challenging word that can be confronta-tional; but our thrust of ministry is helping people to discover their destiny and their purpose. The pur-pose of our church is to help people discover the purpose and plan that God has for them and to help them discover their natural gifting, their natural tal-ent, their natural ability. That is our assignment.

Your Destiny, My Destiny, New DestinyDr. Zachery Tims, Jr.

W hen times change, you expect everything in life to change. No longer do we watch black and white televisions; we have digital cable and plasma screens. Our rotary phones went to push buttons to the now mobile. information went from print to

internet. We as people have evolved in many ways and have begun to stray away from our reli-gious roots, simply because the church has not changed with the times. Unfortunately, as gen-erations grow, we are more dependent on relevancy, interest, and personal aff ects. Many years before, pastors have not been able to meet these demanding changes and have witnessed a decline in the pulpits. Then came pastor Dr. Zachery Tims, Jr., and he didn’t arrive quietly. Leaving Baltimore, Maryland in 1989 after many years of dedicated ministerial service, pastor Tims came to Orlando with a purpose and knew he had to fi nd innovative and time sensitive ways to introduce Orlando to his ministries. From billboards, to TV and radio shows on a mul-titude of national channels, to the sixty-acre campus positioned in the quiet area of Apopka, pastor Tims set standards for others to step out of their religious boxes. - by Brandi Nikole

Page 29: GospelNow 5th Edition

HOW DO YOU TAILOR YOU MESSAGE TO ACCOMMODATE TODAY’S SOCIETY?

O f course you have to be relevant, you have to be practical. We do a lot of our ministry

by incorporating visuals…props…dramatic pre-sentation. [You know] the old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words." so we try to use rel-evant examples, like on this past sunday, my mes-sage was about when God saved you, he had more than you on his mind. He wants to save your fam-ily, friends, neighbors, and co-workers; though he may have started with you. in Matthews 5, it talks about the salt: “We are the light of the world, the salt of the Earth.” i had a salt-shaker in my hand, and i began to shake the salt-shaker. i began to talk about if you don’t spread your salt, your salt will become hard, lumpy, and grumpy. it was with the use of the salt-shaker that i was able to articu-late how if you don’t shake it out, you won’t be able to get it out. Then you can’t realize your full potential for what God gave you to fulfi ll. That’s just one of the ways we use props, metaphors, practical stories, and examples that people can relate to. i think that one of the problems with the church is that we have become antiquated. The message doesn’t change, but the means in which we present the message should change because the times have changed.

WHAT DID YOU THINK YOU WOULD BE DOING AS A CAREER BEFORE DECIDING TO DEDICATE YOUR LIFE TO GOD?

F irst let me say if i didn’t give myself to God, i probably would have been in one of three

places; jail, the cemetery, or the drug house. After giving my life to God, if he didn’t call me into min-istry i would’ve been doing something within busi-ness. As a young person, i was a drug dealer; good at serving the devil. There is no good in serving the devil, but i was good at what i was doing. i was good at doing bad. i was having ungodly success at doing my drug activities. All a drug dealer is, is a businessman. i believe that being saved, i would have still been a businessman; but one who oper-ated in legal activities.

HOW WOULD YOU DIFFERENTIATE YOURSELF FROM OTHER CHURCHES/PASTORS?

W ell, fi rst and foremost, here in Orlando we see now a lot pastors are doing billboards

and are on TV; a lot more pastors pushing media. When we came in 1989 and 1990, we were the fi rst to have billboards in this city. They made fun (of me) and called me “The Billboard pastor;” but that’s what made us stand out. We always were a ministry

www.GospelNow.Net | 25

Page 30: GospelNow 5th Edition

that reached beyond the lines and went beyond the religious parameters. We are very aggressive in the area of marketing, evangelism, and pursuing businesses.

WHAT IS THE BEST SPIRITUAL ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE?

L ife is not perfect. Don’t quit because life is not perfect. Quitting is not an option. Failure and

mistakes may come, but falling does not equate to failure. i would challenge everyone i come in con-tact with to rise above the pitfalls of life and to fi nd a way to keep going. i would challenge individu-als to know they were sent here to do something special. You don’t have to copy somebody else, just pray to God to reveal to you what he has planned for you to do.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT WHILE IN PASTORAL SERVICES?

T he times that we have given away vehicles and helped people to buy houses. Our church

has given away over fi fty vehicles; free of liens, no loans, the car is yours. We’ve helped fi fteen fami-lies get into homes. That means the closing costs, down payments, and so on. Helping people who fi t these roles, people who have dreams and goals; but just need an extra push to realize that goal. They just need somebody to show they believe in them and not just say they do.

TELL ME ABOUT THE GOAL OF THE NEW DESTINY CAMPUS? WHAT ALL DO YOU PROVIDE ON YOUR CHURCH GROUNDS?

W ell, New Destiny Christian Center is a sixty-acre campus, and we’ve only developed

about fi fteen of those sixty acres. so, let me start by saying Orlando hasn’t seen nothing yet, because we are far from done. On those fi fteen acres that are developed, we off er programs that run all the time. There is something going on at our church every day of the week. (Visit www.ndcc.tv for full list of campus activities). We also have a Youth Center that has a bowling alley, and a fourteen-computer, internet café with arcade games. Of course we have our prayer ministry. i’m sure there are other things that i am leaving out, but that’s a good start.

ANY UPCOMING EVENTS AT NEW DESTINY?

Oh yea, plenty. We’ve got our “Mom’s Day Out” that we do every two months, where we plan

an event for all of the mothers and we provide child care while they go out on a saturday. On a saturday in July, we went to Arabian Nights. Coming up we have a spa day. We also have the “Couples Day Out”

coming up for our married and dating couples; where they are going to sanford for the rivership romance Cruise. We have our “Friends and Family Fun Day,” a church-wide picnic at Turkey Lake park with all sorts of competitions going on. Our singles meeting is every fourth sunday at 2:15pm and it’s growing. We are averaging over 200 people and it’s open to the entire Central Florida region.

PASTOR ZACHARY TIMS, DO YOU HAVE ANY LAST REMARKS?

T he New Destiny Church is a church for all peo-ple. We’re building people through purpose,

prayer and power, and we are open for all people.

UrGENT!!! UrGENT!!! ATTENTiON ALL BrOTHErs AND sisTErs iN CHrisT. There is an urgent prayer request that has been made by Sis. Crystal Daniels and needs

everyone to pray for her nine year old son Lloyd Jones. Lloyd Jones A.K.A L.J. was diagnosed with Hyper Eosiniphilic Syndrome and needs a bone marrow transplant and no one in his family is a match. L.J. is the only child in history to be diagnosed with this disease and there has only been a little over 5o adults that have, but none have lived through this disease. That is why this is to me, the most urgent prayer request ever, that is why I, Samuel Laray of Man Up 4 Jesus Ministries has started the Man Up 4 L.J. Movement.

Since the federal government has not proposed comprehensive immigration reform, some state governments have decided to deal with the

issue of illegal immigrants on their own. Arizona and Nebraska have enacted harsh immigration laws that are being challenged in the courts on grounds that the laws violate the U.s. Constitution.

Arizona’s harsh immigration law, "support Our Law Enforcement and safe Neighborhoods Act" (sB 1070), requires state and local law enforcement agencies to check the immigration status of individuals it encoun-ters and makes it a state crime to be without proper immigration documentation. There are six pend-ing lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of this Arizona law. in addition, president Obama publicly

objected to the Arizona law and his administration has decided to fi le a lawsuit to strike down the Arizona law aimed at deporting illegal immigrants. When the U.s. state Attorney fi les suit against Arizona, there will be a fi erce national debate over how the United states should enforce immigration policies.

More recently, Fremont, Nebraska passed an ordi-nance that requires among other things that renters apply for an occupancy license - which also requires a legal immigration status check - before renting an apartment or home. There is an increasing trend among state governments, like Arizona and Nebraska, to propose measures designed to control and man-age immigration. Until the federal government enacts comprehensive immigration reform, there will be many more attempts by state and local governments to pass

overreaching unconstitutional immigration bills. in Florida, the head of the Florida House's criminal justice committee says he's considering the introduction of an Arizona-style law against illegal immigrants. rep. William snyder, a stuart republican and former police offi cer, says he would "unequivocally" support such a law in Florida.

The pending lawsuits seeking to challenge the Arizona and Nebraska law will argue that state and local governments regulation of immigration and crim-inalizing illegal immigrants is unconstitutional because it violates the supremacy Clause, the First Amendment, the Fourth Amendment, the Due process Clause, the privileges and immunities Clause, and the Equal protection Clause. in short, the Constitution is clear that only the Federal government can act in certain areas and immigration is one of those areas; thereby, the state government cannot legislate or act in an area that would be in confl ict with the Federal law (in this case the immigration and Nationality Act).

The Obama Administration and Congress must put the immigration issue squarely back where it belongs - in the halls of Congress and on the desk of the president of the United states.

Tell us a little bit about the mission and vision of the Promise Keepers organization?

promise Keepers is a catalytic ministry issuing a clarion call to the body of Christ to hear and obey the Word of God in the power of the Holy spirit. We believe the way you do this is by meditating in the Word of God daily, which the Lord commands us to do. promise Keepers’ overall goal is to ignite a revolution of the Word of God. We have 5 delivery vehicles through which we issue this clarion call. Vehicle number one, we call pK classic. pK classic is for men only where we challenge men to be godly men, transformed by the Word of God, using the 7 promises of a promise Keeper, which all come from the Word of God. Vehicle number 2 is the pK Transformation conference, that’s the one we are doing in Orlando. The pK Transformation conference is where we challenge men, women and young people to be transformed with the Word of God by the renewing of their minds with the Word of God, so they can prove what the will of God is in their walk and in their lives. We believe that a transformed man or woman who is the head of the house will result in a transformed family; a transformed family will result in transforming the church, and a trans-formed church will transform a community. One hun-dred churches in the same city doing the same thing with transformed people will result in a transformed city. We are including women because nearly half the homes across America are headed up by single mothers. We are living in such a day and time where the moral climate is so overwhelming that transformation of

homes and churches and cities is necessary and we can’t overlook nearly half of the homes that are

headed up by single moms. The 3rd vehi-cle is promise Keepers Young Adult

Igniting Transformation

Converging on Orlando, August 28, 2010 is the one of the greatest opportuni-

ties for community transformation that Central Florida has experienced in a long time. Promise Keepers, led by Coach Bill McCartney and a team of commit-ted, convicted, and called men of God, is “Igniting Transformation” and changing lives in a one-day revolutionary event for the entire family. Promise Keepers President, Dr. Raleigh Washington speaks to Gospel Now in a telephone interview about the life-changing, destiny-defi ning event coming to Orlando at the end of this month.

of young adults. i am of the builder generation; nearly 60% of our generation has a bible based faith. The next generation is the boomers; nearly 38% of boom-ers have a bible based faith. in this current millennial generation, ages 15-30; only 4% of them have a bible based faith. However, 85% of them based on surveys will tell you they are spiritual; but their spirituality is not based on the Word of God. The 4th delivery vehi-cle is what we call Ethnic specifi c pK conference. We are taking the promise Keepers conference, which will be primarily a men’s conference, to the ethnic com-munity. We are going to do an Asian pK conference, a Native American pK conference, a Hispanic pK con-ference, and an African American pK conference. We think there are unique needs and idiosyncrasies within those groups that we can address by taking promise Keepers to them. We will then challenge them to par-ticipate in the pK Transformation conference when it comes to their area. The 5th and fi nal delivery vehicle is the pK road to Jerusalem conference in which we are challenging the church to understand the Jewish roots of the faith, and to understand the biblical man-date for Christians to stand with the believing Jew for the salvation of israel, thus the world.

You indicated the current millennial generation is about 4% having a bible based faith, what do you think that’s attributed to?

i think it’s attributed to the day in which we live. i can best answer that reading the book of Amos, chapter 8:11. “Behold, days are coming saith the Lord, when i will send a famine in the land, not a famine for bread or a thirst for water, but rather for hearing the Word of the Lord.” Coach McCartney and i believe we are living amidst that famine and it’s not really real-ized by the church at large. Hearing and obeying the Word of God in the power of the Holy spirit is a simple biblical mandate; but it is not adhered to by (i believe) almost the majority, even within the body of Christ. That has tremendously aff ected young people, and the young people in this day and age are character-ized by having a very strong independent spirit. Kind of like a Frank sinatra spirit, “i Did it My Way,” or “i’m Gonna’ Do it My Way.” in their independence, they strongly believe in spirituality; but not according to the Word of God. Josh McDowell has written a book called “The Last Christian Generation.” He unveils this

dynamic very clearly. Another evidence of why i’m saying this is nine out of 10 kids

who grow up in the

church, attending children’s church, sunday school, and youth group will graduate from high school, and leave the church. i think it’s directly related to a lack of being suffi ciently infused with the Word of God. The reason i say that is AWANA international has given us this statistic. if a kid in a church successfully completes 4th, 5th and 6th grade AWANA programs, 9 out of 10 of those kids never leave the church; they end up in ministry. The AWANA program is 90% bible memorization; memorizing scripture. That’s why promise Keepers is partnering with AWANA as we conduct our conferences.

Is the partnership with AWANA primarily for the young adult conference?

No, we partner with them for all of our conferences because we want pastors, men and women to under-stand what value the AWANA program has for chil-dren for sustaining their spiritual walk.

The 5 vehicles by which the mission and vision of Promise Keepers is facilitated are primarily confer-ences; is that the predominant way that Promise Keepers reaches the public or the general audience?

it is. promise Keepers is an event-focused ministry. We do seminars and we have break-out sessions at our young adult and road to Jerusalem conferences. promise Keepers is a catalytic ministry and we cata-lyze by way of events.

Promise Keepers is a global organization, are there grassroots efforts in local churches that connect local groups with the national organization?

Yes; however, promise Keepers is not a member organization. We catalyze men and pastors and we have support material that we provide to the pastors and the men’s ministry leaders to do the follow up and the follow through. For example, we are partner-ing with Dr. Tony Evans and the Urban Alternative. One of his national programs is “Every church adopt a school program.” We challenge churches to embrace that, because if it infl uences a school it not only infl u-ences the kids, but all of the families associated with that school.

Dr. Washington, what fostered your involvement with Promise Keepers and to whom or what do you attribute your continued involvement?

i was invited by promise Keepers in 1993 to speak at a pastor’s gathering before their major event. At that “93 conference i met Coach Bill McCartney, the founder; and he and i really struck a deep relation-

ship as he and i both have a deep heart for

www.GospelNow.Net | 37

Page 42: GospelNow 5th Edition

the ministry of reconciliation and healing the divides in the Body of Christ. i co-authored a book in 1994 called “Breaking Down Walls” with Glen Kehrein, who is anglo and was my partner in ministry in Chicago at that time. Coach read our book and he was really touched by it because it addresses his heart. When he started promise Keepers, he said hundreds of times what God placed on his heart was the bonding of the brotherhood. That is for men of all ethnic groups to stand shoulder to shoulder, arm in arm, and back to back. That was his deep concern and they invited me after they heard me speak to join the board of direc-tors of promise Keepers and the rest is history.

Can you tell me a little bit about the Orlando event and what can the participants in our area expect to experience?

i want to say that we really appreciate the work with the two host pastors, pastor David Uth of First Baptist, and Bishop Allen Wiggins of the Hope Church. The two pastors and their ministries are partnering together to transform their communities around the Hope Church area. We had a pastors and leaders breakfast at First Baptist last month with over 300 people. i was so blessed because over a third of them were people of color; mostly African Americans. We are praying that the conference will have that same diversity in it when we open to gather 5,000-6,000 at First Baptist Church. What they can expect is a life-changing, catalytic ministry for men, women, and young people. They are going to hear powerful evangelistic messages from Jonathan Bernis and Coach Bill McCartney on his calling to hear and obey the Word of God in the power of the Holy spirit. They are going to be chal-lenged with a powerful message from Anne Graham Lotz, who is declared to be the best preacher in the Graham family, according to her daddy, Billy Graham. They are going to hear a powerful, impactful chal-lenge from pastor Uth and Bishop Wiggins, addressing the responsibility for the believers to reach out to the poor, the oppressed and the needy. They are going to hear a powerful challenge from a couple of Messianic leaders on “Who the Messianic Believer is and how they fi t in God’s plan of redemption for this day and age.” i’ll be speaking in that arena as well. They are going to be blessed by promise Keeper’s Young Adult Transformation band, paul Wilbur who is a Messianic integrity Music Artist; they are going to see powerful Messianic dancing from a young group called UNiT E, they will hear a rendition of the spoken word by a powerful young man, Bobby Whiting, and they will

see the evangelistic message set up by K&K Mime. Those attening can expect their lives to be impacted and changed in ways like never before.

How do ministries in or around Central Florida become participants in the Transformation conference?

They can register online at www.promisekeepers.org. registration is FrEE! They can call 866-776-6473.

How was Orlando chosen to serve as a host community for the conference this year?

We are taking this message across America and around the world. We selected Orlando because we have a number of promise Keepers constituents in the Orlando area, and we have promise Keepers ambas-sadors in the Orlando area who let us know that there is a ground swell of support and they wanted us to come. We especially want to go to the places where we already have a fi re lit.

“Igniting Transformation,” is a pretty bold and power-ful statement. What is Promise Keepers expecting for the Central Florida community after the conference is over?

We want pastors to come together and work together for the Kingdom of God in Central Florida. We want them to expand their horizon beyond their immediate congregation and realize they are apart of the larger Body of Christ in the Central Florida area; and if they would work together for the cause of Christ to see Central Florida transformed, we can expect revival to take place in the Central Florida area because it’s God’s heart for transformation. paul writes, “i urge you brethren” and i add “sisteren” to present your bodies a holy sacrifi ce, acceptable unto God which is only your reasonable service. Don’t be conformed to the world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind so that you can prove what the will of God is; that which is good, perfect and acceptable. We want to see that become a forest fi re in the Central Florida area. We want to see pastors working in concert with one another, not in competition with one another. We want to see pastors and churches working together, seeing an igniting of the Word of God, which will result in a transformation that will bless Central Florida.

Walter HawkinsWalter HawkinsWalter HawkinsWalter HawkinsWalter HawkinsWalter Hawkins1949 - 20101949 - 20101949 - 2010Walter Hawkins, a Grammy Award-winning gos-pel singer, composer and pastor from Oakland, died Sunday. He was 61.

Hawkins, who was battling pancreatic cancer, passed away at his home in Ripon, California.

Born in Oakland, Hawkins studied for his divinity degree at the University of California, Berkeley. While at the university, he recorded his first album titled "Do Your Best" in 1972. The next year, Hawkins became a pastor and founded the Love Center Church in Oakland, where he also formed a choir.

In the 1980s, Hawkins recorded a number of albums and earned nine Grammy Award nomina-tions, according to friend and family representative, Bill Carpenter. His "The Lord's Prayer" won a Grammy in 1980 and he also performed on the televised Grammy Awards ceremony that year.

In 1990, Hawkins released "Love Alive III" which spent 34 weeks at the top on the Billboard gospel album sales chart, while going on to sell more than a million copies, according to Carpenter. In 1993 his next album, "Love Alive IV," also hit the top spot on the album sales chart. Between work on the two albums, Hawkins was ordained a bishop in October 1992.

At the time of his death, Hawkins was planning a new "Love Alive" CD concert recording for this fall.

Hawkins is survived by his brother Edwin, four other siblings, two children, two grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

I am what I think

Life has been no crystal stair

If I but touch the hem of his garment

I will be made whole

But I know through it all I have learned to trust in Jesus I have learned to trust in God

Hallelujah I have power love and a sound mind

One day somewhere over the rainbow

I will see my dream in mind’s eye

Beating at the curtains of life

And wishing that God will give me a second chance

A second chance to please my family, friends and all those that count

in this game called life

But if I can get it mentally together and like the women with the issue of blood

12 long years she suffered

And her keys were there

You are what you think

So pick up the pieces of your life

And begin to dance to your own music

Live your dreams

Because what you sow you reap

Now I have power, love and a sound mind

Because I am healed!

By His stripes I am healed

So let us beat this drum of life together

Because life has been no crystal stair, but I know one day I will make it

if I only believe
