HIPAA stands for The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (Public Law 104-191), which was enacted on August 21, 1996.

Sections 261 through 264 of HIPAA require the Secretary of HHS to publicize standards for the electronic exchange, privacy and security of

health information.

The primary goal of the law is to make it easier for people to keep health insurance, protect the confidentiality and security of healthcare

information and help the healthcare industry control administrative costs.
