Career Academies/Pathways • CTE programs, career academies, and other pathways models all rely on a high level

of employer engagement, and we certainly found evidence of that in the survey results. The vast majority noted that businesses were involved in some key ways, such as participating on advisory boards (90%), sharing their expertise with students (85%), or offering students work-based learning opportunities (81%).

• However, we also found evidence of missed opportunities for engagement at a higher level. Only 40% reported that employers participated in program design or retrofit, or in curriculum development; 35% said that employers offered learning opportunities to teachers; 27% said that employers shared their expertise with the school (for example, a PR company helping the school with branding and communications); and only 16% report employers serving as executive mentors to administrators.

 • Connecting employers to students is critically important, of course. But business partners can, and want to,

do more. If you want a pathways program that provides students with current and truly relevant preparation, it makes sense to invite employers to the table to help with program structure, curriculum development, and teacher prep. It also makes sense to offer your partners "skills-based volunteering" opportunities, letting them share their professional expertise in a way that can benefit your entire operation and support your administration.
