Executive Summary

• Brief about area: The IWMP-3 project area of Chintamani taluk is 20 kms away Narth towards taluka head quarter. It comprises the geographical area of 5374.23 ha. Of 32 villages belonged to 5 Grama panchayats (GP) viz. Kencharlahalli, Eragmpalli, Raguttahalli. Kotagl & Yagamakote the project area. The SWS are named as Kushavathi SWS and they are divided into 10 micro w/s as fallows, 1.Kencharalahalli 2. Gollahalli 3.Yandahalli 4.Iragmpalli 5 Bramanarahalli 6.Seetharampura 7.Bairabanda 8.Naramakalahalli 9. Mindigal 10.Gundikere

The project area lies between longitude E 780 4’35” to E780 6’41” (W-E) and latitude N130 29’37” to N13033’50”(S-N) . The soils are shallow gravely sandy loams in uplands and deep red loamy soils in valley lands Land slope varies from 3 to 4%. Steep slopes are denuded for cultivation as such overland flow from heavy rains is lost along with fertile top soil. Ground nut occupies 75% of rain fed area. MFs and SFs constitute 77% and hold 63% of cropped area in the form of small holdings on steep slopes, landless (11%) families depend on seasonal farm labour for their livelihood. They find labour in their native till the end of kharif season and later move to nearby project areas other activities. Detailed planning for the selected area of 4050 ha. under IWMP-3 project with an outley of Rs 486 is worked out for taking up land treatments under soil and water conservation, horticulture, forestry and animal husbandry sectors.

• Institutional arrangements: All the 32 habituate villages are connected by main roads, and power supply .Educational institutions

up to higher secondary level, anganawadi facilities are available in all the villages. The primary health centre and veterinary services are at GP level and weekly markets at hobli level are accessible within a radius of 8-9 kms. The GPs are appraised of the implementation of IWMP- project in their area with peoples participation. Three Watershed Committees (WC) at GP level, 50 Self Help Groups (SHGs) and 30 User Groups (UGs) at village level have been formed to take-up various project activities.

• Salient Project activities: • Enhancing quality life among village community. • Ensuring institutional support for strengthening community organisation for data collection and preparation of action plans. • Inducing and strengthening both landless and poor landholders for income generation activities. • Reduction of soil and water erosion and fertility improvement for crop production. • Increasing household income of landholders through integrated farming and adoption of allied activities like, sheep/goat

poultry/rearing and vermi compost production etc. • Improving vegetative cover for fodder, fuel wood, and timber. • Improving ground water recharge.

Out of the total expenditure of treatments in private holdings, the SFs, MFs, SC and STs have to contribute 5% and others 10% either in cash or in kind.

Treatment area and details: Both arable (4050 ha.) and non arable (423.18 ha.) area will be treated with earthen field bunds of 0.45 section with WWs. Drainage line treatment includes MPTs, rubble checks and bolder checks. Horticultural species like mango, sapota, tamarind, Nerale grafts, cashew seedlings will be supplied to farmers to raise block plantation. Forestry seedlings - teak and silver oak will be provided for planting on bunds and field margins. Common lands and drainage lines will be covered by strip planting with species that supply fuel, fodder and timber. Another thrust program is capacity building of watershed community. PRA, EPA, baseline survey, awareness of WCs, SHGs , and UGs through trainings, meetings, exposure visits, pamphlets, folders and wall paintings will be conducted . The WS community will be made to learn about present problems , problem solving , formation of sanghas, importance of small savings , saving through sanghas, book keeping, utilizing saved money for I.G. activities as well as repairs and maintenance of developed resources in WS even after handing over and exit of WDT.

• Fact sheet about bench mark indicators and action plan a glance

• Reduction in seasonal migration from project area to other areas due to availability of labour in the project itself throughout the

season.

• Rise in ground water table.

• Increase in the crop yield through crop diversification and cropping intensity.

• Availability of good drinking water through out the year.

• Increase in the vegetative cover in the watershed area.

• Self employment of landless people in different income generating production systems and improvement in their livelihood.

• Increased availability of fodder, fuel wood and other raw materials to the rural community.

• Change of mono cropping to crop diversification as maize is the mono crop in the area.

• Increased crop yield due to conservation and adoption of dry land practices.

Yes / No Kencharlahalli, Raguttahalli Iragmpalli

The WC members and the village community assembled on the scheduled date and time to conduct PRA in the

villages of the Watershed area. PRA was conducted in all the villages of the 1 sub watersheds. The members of the

WCs, SHGs and UGs assembled a as per venue. An experienced person was asked to draw map of the village and in it

to mark the existing features like village site, road, cart track, foot path, water supply site, temple, school, nalas,

tanks, bore wells, forest area through their own discussion using coloured rangoli powder and small pebbles. The

maps so drawn on ground were compared with topo sheet maps to create awareness about community assets. The

existing natural resources - soil, water, forest, agricultural land and their degradation was explained .Crops grown,

yield level, family income, family size, other livelihood activities, educational status, health problems etc and their

connection with environment were discussed. The conservation measures proposed by them were marked on the

watershed plan drawn on the ground. Also they were asked to mark the sites of establishing plantations of

horticulture and forestry. The nala courses were marked with structure and vegetative measures.

A Venn diagram was prepared on the enlarged village map to show the facilities like school, hospital, anganwadi,

dairy, society, bank, market etc. The present main problems of the village community as a whole were discussed

.The issues raised were power supply, drinking water, approach road community hall ,repair of tank/temple /bore

well ,constructing gokatte /CD,PTand establishment of nursery.

The Watershed concept and its importance were then introduced and discussed. The participants were shown of the Watershed boundary, drainage courses, private lands and community lands, included in the Watershed. The required land treatments and their cost were explained. The government share available and the beneficiary contribution (either cash or kind) were made known to them. The beneficiary share is SF, MF, SC & ST and others. The collection of data for net plan from each family both landless and landholders, formation of SHGs, UGs and Watershed committee at GP level for all watershed development activities were also explained.

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND

Page 42: GOVERNMENT OF KARNATAKA WATERSHED ...watershed.kar.nic.in/IWMP_DPR_BATCH1_files/Chintamani.pdfGOVERNMENT OF KARNATAKA WATERSHED DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT INTEGRATED WATERSHED MANAGEMENT

• Project Background: The IWMP-3 project area of Chintamani Tq comprising 5 Grampanchayats and 32 villages and having a geographical area of 4473.29 ha. Which are further divided into 10 micro w/s as fallows,

• Kencharalahalli 2. Gollahalli 3.Yandahalli 4.Iragmpalli 5 Bramanarahalli 6.Seetharampura 7.Bairabanda

8.Naramakalahalli 9. Mindigal 10.Gundikereand one main Kushavathi Nala after traversing in the watershed leading to

Kandakur tank of Andrapradesh

• The project area is bound by a range of hillocks on eastern side and a low ridge in the north. The dividing line passing

through all these peak points on the hill range and the north ridge will be the watershed boundary.

• The livelihood of people depends on dry land agriculture. The rainfall of the area is 705.mm annually but most of it

nearly 50%-60% runoff escapes as muddy water into the Kushavathi Nala. Fertile soil loss, ground water depletion,

poor crop yield, deforestation, and biotic pressure on resources necessitate w/s programmes in the area.

Project Location: The project area lies between longitude E780 4’ 35” to 780 6’41” (W-E) and latitude N130 29’37” to

N130 33’ 50” ( S-N) the Kushavathi sub watersheds are contiguous and are about 20 kms towards north of Chintamani

to Chelur road passes in the middle of the project area.

All the habitat villages are connected by pucca road and by some kachcha road and tracts in the interior area.

Infrastructural facilities like rural electrification, educational up to high school level and anganwadi kendras are

provided in all the villages. Primary health centre and veterinary hospital at Kencharlahally, Raguttahally and

Iragampalli cater the needs of rural folk around 8-9 Kms radius. Weekly market at Iragmpalli & Kencharalahally meets

Total area available for treatment is 4050 ha. Which includes private land of 3900 ha and common land 150 ha.

• Livelihood : Small and marginal land holders depend on rain fed crops , the landless people depend on labour available in farming

activities while some are engaged in sheep/goat/cattle raring .

• Need and Scope for Watershed Development: The foothills are deforested and cultivation of crops is progressing on steep slopes. Rills

and gullies are extending in all cultivated dry lands due to faulty cultivation and land not being used according to its capability. The

annual runoff producing rain of 290.32mm results in flash floods and most of the surface runoff carry fertile top soil into the river. The

time of concentration being (about 1.05hrs) very low, opportunity for infiltration is very less. Low organic matter content (<2%) further

aggravates moisture holding in the soil and most of it drains to low lands. The valley lands that are flat deposits of fine soils are also

suffering from water logging. The main cause for all these problems is steep sloppiness which needs to be broken into shorter ones for

conservation. Even the 10% irrigated area suffers from shortage of water in bore wells. Siltation of water bodies , fodder, food, fuel

shortage quality drinking water, livelihood of landless people are some more problems for which there is lot of scope for integrated

watershed development through involving w/s community to alleviate the problems.

• Weight age for selection of Watershed (as per DoLR’s instructions already issued)

• Watershed Information: The project area is composed of hillocks and valleys. Kushavathi SWS is in U Shep Land is sloping towards N-W.

The forest area is very meager and no valuable forest trees are found. There are one medium tank for irrigation. The soils are gravelly red

silt loams. Total area under rain fed crops is 3900 ha. And irrigated area is 95.87ha. Total human population is 11,726 with a population

density of 200/sqkm and animal population is 4391 with a density of 0.72/ha (birds are not included) which indicates heavy loss of animal

power.

• Status of previous watershed programmes & other development projects in the area: Very old 3 medium tanks , 4 minor tanks , 10

gokattas and a 8 CDs built by other departments in the area are completely silted up and are not in working state, and they need desilting.

• Physiography: The project area consists of undulating tracts with S-N running hillocks that occupy about 5-6% watershed area. The general slope in the

sub watershed is from west to East West , the land slopes in three directions i.e. W-E and N-E. The slope varies from 2% to 6% . The level difference

between ridge and valley is 2to 15m. The soil on well lands.

• Slope ranges from 2% to 6.0%.

• Order of SWS: 411C9A, 4C1C9C, 4C3D6F, 4C1C9B, 4C3F7B

• Nala : Major nalas have their origin in western hillocks. The nalas are dry for most of the period and carry only seasonal flow.

• Climate : The watershed area comes under southern Eastern Dry zone . Bright sunshine during summer, cloudiness during kharif and extreme cold during

rabi are of common occurrence. The climate shows extreme variations. Fast blowing winds prevail for about 3-4 months . Data on temperature, wind

velocity, and open PEM not being available, quantifiable climatic analysis could not be carried out but qualitative facts are mentioned.

Annual average rainfall is 700 and is received from both SW & NE monsoon .The uni model RF is is fairly well distributed enabling to take up croping in

both kharif and rabi season. Runoff producing rains of 320 mm received in 15days in a year are not much beneficial as they result in over land flow. Time of

concentration being as low as 1.05 hours, infiltration is also less, as such crops wither after 6-7 days of stoppage of rain. Soaking rains are found beneficial

to crops but high wind velocity coupled with high sunshine result in higher evapotranspiration losses also.

Drought occurance : Drought occurs in two years and repeats once in 4-5 years.

No of runoff producing rainy days: 320mm/Yr and is received in 15 days.

Watershed characteristics:

1. Shape index of watershed: SWS is elongate and has banana leaf shape.

2. Length of main stream: 15 km.

3. Drainage density: = 2.00 Km /sqkm 4. Average slope : 4%

5 Drainage pattern: coarse drainage texture, angular pattern indicates good water conductivity. The soils are shallow

and coarse in texture in upper and middle reaches ,and are very fine deep texture in lower reaches . Soil erosion is mostly due to

detachment and transport by surface runoff and deposition of the same in water coarse having mild slope or erupt rock outs.

BASELINE SURVEY

Page 56: GOVERNMENT OF KARNATAKA WATERSHED ...watershed.kar.nic.in/IWMP_DPR_BATCH1_files/Chintamani.pdfGOVERNMENT OF KARNATAKA WATERSHED DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT INTEGRATED WATERSHED MANAGEMENT

• Socio-Economic conditions : Total population of the project is 4 of 11726 which male is 6016 and female is 5990. SC population is

4273(36.44%) ST 1437 (12.25%) Others 6016 (51.30%). Out of 2905 families MFs are 755 (25.98%) SF 1125 (38.72%), LFs 544 (18.72%) and LLs

481(16.55%). Main occupation of 84% families is agriculture and about 16% landless depend on farm labour. A very small no. of families are

engaged in sheep/goat raring and other petty business. Literacy level is 69% both male and female are equally educated.

• Soil and Land Use : Gravely sandy loams are found in 4-7% sloppy areas and red silt loams are predominant in 3to 5% slopes. Rain fed area is more (77%). Land use is not according to land capability. Steep slopes have been encroached for rain fed crop production where forest or dry land horticultural plantations would have been raised.

• Agriculture including area, productivity, cropping intensity, etc: More than 77% area of the w/s is under rain fed crops. Major crop is Ground Nut, tur & Ragi. Red gram crop taken up as sole crops in a small area. Mixed cropping is rare. Ragi is mixed with Avare sometimes. Productivity of cereals varies between 10-15qtls/ha. Kharif is the main cropping season. Cashew and Mango plantations are found on plains. Scrubs and bushes are found in common lands, valuable trees are of rare occurrence in the w/s area. Majority farmers apply chemical fertilizers.

• Horticulture : The main horticultural crop is Mango & Cashew.

• Livestock and Fisheries : Cross breeds dominate in the w/s area. A few farmers have improved breeds for milk production.

Landless marginal people have adopted sheep and goat raring.

• Forests and Grass land : No Reserve forest exist in the project area.

• Livelihood Status : Dairy, sheep and goat raring are some of the livelihood activities. Majority of the agriculture labourers have to wait for

their livelihood till the return of next kharif season.

• Hydrology and Water Resources : The terrain has meagre vegetative cover. Lot of runoff flows out of watershed area. There are only seven

tanks. Deep stuck bore wells are the only sources for the irrigated area which is less than 10%. Repeated cultural operations for annual

crops on sloppy lands subject them to erosion.

• PRA is conducted in all the habitat villages of the 4 SWS . Social Mobilization and Community Organization by Constitution of SHGs,UGs at village level and WC at GP

level are constituted and awareness created about their role and participation in all watershed development programmes
