1st Annual
Governor’s Reception
“It would be hard to imagine,” Governor
Schwarzenegger declared in a proclama-
tion making May 2009 Asian Pacific
Islander American Heritage Month in
California, “a California without the
wonderful influence of our Asian Pacific
Islander residents.” It was thus altogether
fitting that myriad API public officials,
activists, and members of the commu-
nity-at-large descended upon the Stan-
ford Mansion in downtown Sacramento
on May 20, 2009, to celebrate API
American Heritage Month.
The gathering marked the 1st Annual
Governor’s Reception to mark the occa-
sion, co-sponsored by APAPA - Amy
Tong served as the able event organizer
and chair – and the Joint API Legislative
Caucus.

need anything, go to C.C.”
He then proceeded to describe his own
uniquely Californian story as an immi-
grant. Governor Schwarzenegger noted
the time he spent in Hawaii as a youth,
learning about bodybuilding from a Japa-
nese-American mentor. Upon the closing
of his remarks, the Governor insisted on
remaining in order to personally greet
guests, despite the protestations of his
impatient staff.
Governor Schwarzenegger may have
made a little history of his own by
hosting the first API American Heritage
Month reception, but there can be no
doubt what follows will only be bigger
and better.
Many of the speakers proudly pointed to
the fact that there are now more APIs
serving in the California state govern-
ment than ever before, proof positive that
the community is truly making history
every year.
Of course, many of the speakers were
those very state leaders who forged and
continue to forge new trails for succeed-
ing members of the community to not
only follow but exceed.
The participation of Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger later in the afternoon
served to further emphasize the increas-
ing importance of the API community in
the rich mix of cultures that is California.
The Governor started out by paying
tribute to community leader and APAPA
founder C.C. Yin, pointing out, “If you
