My name is JonathanDossetor and I have been apublic governor for WestNorfolk for two years. TheGovernors’ Council meetsfive times in the year, but

additional activities are necessary to enable theGovernors to fulfil their role.

One of the principles of the FoundationTrust is more involvement by the public in theirlocal hospital. This is achieved by developingpublic membership of the Trust. This is likebeing a shareholder in a public company orbecoming a ‘friend’ of an organisation. AsChairman of the Membership Committee, I havebeen involved in recruiting new members andtrying to get the membership to reflect thecommunity we serve. For instance, the lack ofmembers aged between 16 and 20 was correctedwhen we recruited at the College of West AngliaFreshers’ Fayre in September.

Although members have an opportunity

to get more involved with the Trust, our mainrole is to keep members informed about Trustissues (via the newsletters like this one) and tomake sure their views can be heard. One waywe have been doing this is to attend PatientParticipation Group meetings at GP practices. Iattend the Woottons PPG. Very often there aremisunderstandings about the Trust which we cancorrect; for instance I was able to tell one personthat all the money collected from the car parksgoes directly into patient care and is not ‘profit’for any other body.

Another Governor role is to help improvethe patient experience. I attend the PatientExperience Committee, and this has an inputfrom many aspects of hospital activity. I takepart in two types of internal inspectiondeveloped to correct any problems inenvironment or quality of care at an early stage:The Patient Experience Environment Team andmock Care Quality Commission inspections.

Jonathan DossetorPublic Governor

My name is David Coe and I am a Non-Clinicalstaff governor. I have been a governor for twoyears and during that time I have helped in theappointment of two new Non-ExecutiveDirectors through the Nomination andRemuneration Committee.

I am also on the Governors’ BusinessWorking group. We are responsible for advisingand/or making recommendations to the fullGovernors’ Council about the Trust’s regulatoryposition and development of the Trust’s longterm strategy, annual business plan and annualreport.

At the last monthly meeting weconsidered the report of the Trust’s meetingwith Monitor. We also looked at: Patient Choice, protection of QEH interests, provision of highquality services (which are valued by patients),winter pressures and the need to improve

income and savings by theend of the financial year.

I have attended allGovernors’ Councilmeetings so far, torepresent staff views in helping to plan thestrategic direction of the Trust (not theoperational position, which can sometimes be adifficult concept for staff to take in). During thisperiod, I have chaired four staff members’meetings. I would like to ask all staff to try andattend further staff meetings as this helps us toraise any concerns you have regarding thestrategic direction that the Trust is taking. Thenext scheduled meeting is on 9 April at 15.00 inthe Conference Room. Please come along andhelp shape the future of The QEH!
