Science Arts &
Crafts Festival
5:00 – 7:00pm
Grace Christian School February 2020
The Science Arts and Crafts Festival is a fantastic evening for the whole GCS
family. Students who enter a project are eager to share their creations with their teachers, friends and families. Even if a student doesn’t enter a project, it is an
evening of fellowship with friends and an opportunity to see all the effort and hard work that went into all that is on display!
Projects need to be dropped off at the lunch tables before school on the day of
the Festival along with a completed entry card. This is necessary so that projects can be organized and set up for display by the
time the Festival begins at 5:00pm.
Calling all budding scientists and artists! Have you finished creating your masterpiece for the
Science Arts and Crafts Festival which will be held
Thursday, February 20, 2020?
It’s not too late!
All students are welcome to…and encouraged to participate, showing off a bit of the God given unique character and talent each one possesses. Get creative! Anything that shows a child’s interest, creativity, and skill in making a craft, model, science project or work of art is
acceptable. Students can enter a student original, prefabricated kit, project, or student/family project. Be sure to check the flyer sent home with students for details.

Each 4th
grade student chose a famous person to research. They then spent weeks
writing and memorizing speeches that they proudly delivered for an audience of
friends and family. They even went all out dressing their part.
Not only did the students learn about the people that they studied, all those in the
audience learned a new fact or two as well about folks such as Pocahontas,
Davy Crockett, Abraham Lincoln, Marie Curie, Neil Armstrong, Laura Ingalls Wilder,
Jackie Robinson, Anne Frank, Betsy Ross, Fred McFeely Rogers!
Amazing job 4th grade…you each did fantastic!

The Youth Pastor from Cottonwood Church, Mrs. Grace Johnson (who also happens to be the mom to 2 precious girls here at GCS) was a guest
speaker in Chapel this month. In Psalm 150:6, it says, “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” We were created for this very purpose – we
are to declare God’s praises and glorify Him in ALL that we do. That includes not only praise through worship songs, but speaking to others with kindness and loving our neighbors. She left the students with 2
challenges and a secret. The first challenge was to think of one way to tell God just one thing you are thankful for…that is an easy challenge. The
second, a bit harder, is to pause 10 seconds when tempted to say something unkind and choose kind words instead; if you can’t, then don’t say anything at all. The secret to be hidden in your heart, is to remember
that God loves you and gave you a purpose!
Miss Sinko’s first grade class shared about the reason we honor and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He grew up in a time when he was judged simply because of the color of his skin. But he went to church, learned about God and how God had created him in His image…and he
wanted to help others to learn those same truths. Dr. King faced many hardships, being mistreated and even thrown in jail. But he knew God was always with him and that God had a plan and a purpose for his life…and Dr. King never gave up. He dreamed big dreams and through his actions, made a difference in this world. He earned a doctorate degree, became a reverend, had a dream, earned the Nobel Peace Prize, and most importantly was a God follower. One of the biggest lessons we can take away from Dr. King is that
God created each of us with a purpose and gave each of us talents to be used for His kingdom. Dr. King used his gifts as God directed him. The first graders are learning about their purpose and shared how God created some
to be adventurous, a baker or a dog lover, an artist or an explorer, a baseball player or a swimmer….just to name a few. Dr. King’s influence continues to impact each of us as individuals as well as all of mankind.

Jon Wyatt from Cypress Church was a guest speaker in Chapel this month. He challenged students to think about how we can worship God
through more than just singing praise songs. In fact, we can worship God throughout the day, all day, with our whole bodies. He shared from the book of Psalms just a few of the scriptures that help us to recognize that we can worship in quiet moments or with great volume, when we are just waking up or getting ready to lie down for the night, when we are sitting in class or walking from here to there…there is not a time of the day or a location when there is not an opportunity to praise and
worship our Creator. And we can use our whole bodies to worship…not just our voices! Mr. Wyatt had students standing, walking, running,
kneeling, clapping, jumping, being still, and even sleeping in Chapel…reminding students that God is always with them, and that He
is always worthy to be praised in each and every circumstance.
Mrs. Price’s 3rd
grade class shared about the value of truly knowing and understanding the Beattitudes taught by Jesus. Left on
our own, we tend to try to be tough and handle our problems without seeking help; we tend to boast about ourselves and seek
revenge when we feel we have been wronged; we seek things in our life that bring us instant satisfaction even when it isn’t good for us; and we don’t always choose to do the right thing if someone is not watching us. But when we focus on the words of Jesus we learn
that blessed are the poor in spirit, those that mourn, the meek, those who seek righteousness, the pure in heart, the peacemakers and the
persecuted. We are blessed for having honorable qualities even when faced with tough situations. It is Jesus’ desire that we rely on
Him, practice humility, seek righteousness, forgive others, be a peacemaker, and make right choices even when no one is watching. Practicing these Beattitudes bring peace and joy to your spirit. As
the second graders sang, you can be “inright, outright, upright downright happy all the time.”

With the start of a new year comes new opportunities and new beginnings. The slate is clean and we are free to dream and make changes and/or improvements that will help us to be happier, more productive and effective influencers in God’s
Kingdom. Successful people have visions and goals. A dream is a vision…a vision is a goal…and a goal is a plan. However, a dream without a plan is simply a wish. Dr.
P shared the need to set goals and the areas in which we each need to set those goals including academic and financial, family, spiritual, physical, career and social.
Some of the goals could include reading a nonfiction book, regularly calling or visiting with a grandparent, reading through a certain portion of the Bible, or
putting the phone away during meal times. Whatever goals are chosen, they also need to meet the following 5 criteria: they must be specific, they must be
measurable, there must be a time limit, goals need to be one’s own and not a desire of someone else, and they need to be in writing. Dr. P encouraged students to take some time to reflect, determine goals and begin thinking about how to reach those
goals…and to use this new year to start fresh!
After learning about goal setting in Chapel from Dr. P, NJHS students were asked to set goals for themselves in each of the seven areas outlined by Dr. P, and to set parameters in reaching those goals.
Those students then met with their peers to share their goals, how they chose to organize them, and answer questions. Each student will be completing a similar task in their Bible class in the upcoming weeks.
As Dr. P said, a dream is a vision, a vision is a goal and a goal is a plan.
We have had many visiting students at our school this month from Korea and China. Those students have been integrated not only into the classrooms, but invited to join all aspects of the Junior High experience. In Chapel, Mrs. Clark spent time sharing some of the cornerstones of the Christian faith so that these students could understand what
we believe here at Grace Christian School, perhaps grow in their knowledge of the Christian faith, and have the opportunity to seek clarification and answers to questions
they may have. Not only did Mrs. Clark present those cornerstones, but many of our Junior High students supported those cornerstones by reading from scripture. They
shared who God is, what we believe about the Bible, when and with whom sin entered the world, who Jesus is and His purpose for coming to live here on earth for a time, and
the part we play as active participants in the Christian faith.

Junior High students were blessed to have Mr. Clarke in Chapel as a guest speaker this month. His focus was on the verse in Matthew that
commands us to love God with our minds. Mr. Clarke reminded students that God created them with brains and inquisitive minds. There are
times when we all have questions or even moments where we doubt our faith. But Jesus is not offended or angered when we ask the tough
questions or have doubts. His desire is for us to seek the truth. When you ask those tough questions, and dig deep seeking truth, there you will
find God…because God is truth. Mr. Clarke closed his time in Chapel answering some of those tough questions written anonymously ahead of
time by the students such as, “Who created God?” and “If God knows everything, why did he create a world knowing there would be evil?”
