Design short listed for:The City of Calgary Mayors Urban Design Awards November 2011

The scope of this project included an intensive mapping process that informed both the design of a community master plan for Sunalta, Calgary and well as a community cultural centre. In this 8 week project the concept of catalyst architecture was explored. A new LRT station (2012) will incite accelerated growth in this inner city neighbourhood and in order to meet current and future populations needs, this design was created to suture a fragmented community and direct its growth. 01

The community cultural centre includes multiples services for Sunalta residents as well as functions that would act as a draw for Calgarians residing outside of the immediate area, such as a theatre and an event space. By extensively mapping the types of services currently located in the community, and studying the existing ARP, services that meet the current and future needs of residents are included in the design. Bridging the CPR, the centre spans both sides of the railway tracks and redirects the public pathway between. Aesthetically the building reflects the massive infrastructure surrounding, paying homage to the public transportation routes that have shaped Sunalta. By situating the building on one of the most difficult sites in the area, a precedent for future designs is set. 01

Collaboration with Gabe Didiano and Michael McGie

This body of work was completed during a study abroad program in Barcelona, Spain. The program brief was to develop a secondary school in the context of Barcelona’s Eixample. Within the working group, we decided to strive for integration of an education program beyond the normative typology of a secondary school. The design included the reinterpretation of urban conditions to facilitate public usage and student usage concurrently. Ultimately a school was designed that saw its occupants moving through the urban realm to a series of pavilions for learning. The design strategy involved the creation of multiple models exploring topics such as topography, light, canopies, vegetation, etc. Through these ephemeral studies, the building design and master site plan emerged organically. 02

Design Partner: Frédéric Brisson

The design and curation of the institute reflects an understanding of the need for balanced energy consumption strategies. The building ramps upward, drawing occupants through series of experiential spaces that allow visitors to realise their position within the natural environment. Arms of the museum are dedicated to exhibitions exploring past present and future way people use energy.

As part of the comprehensive design semester, the HVAC, structure, lighting and building systems were mapped out. The end result is a structure with a plausible design within the context of Calgary.

This Institute is designed as a regenerative building both considering the existing local conditions of its site and enhancing its natural surroundings. The social importance of the site as a public pathway is acknowledged and integrated while a new public park used as a community garden is created for the local citizens. The escarpment continues on the various roof surfaces of the museum and several places on the skin of the building are designed to collect solar energy. Finally the building captures gray water and expresses the proximity to the river in its roofscape.

This teahouse was designed to provide a space where the river’s reflective properties become the sole experience of the tea drinkers. Entering the site off the bow river pathway and down a forested trail, one becomes disjointed from the larger city. Within the glazed structure, the dark, angular wooden roof covers a large portion of the venue, allowing the sunlight to reflect off the river and transpose itself on the walls. This water reflection creates a gentle spectacle for those watching. Occu-pants are able to completely remove themselves from the daily flow and become immersed in the moment of drinking tea. 04

This is an architectural model of a building designed by sinclairstudio inc. in collaboration with Riddell Kurczaba Architects. It was hand crafted using basswood and plexiglass. A previous series of like basswood models I had created caught the attention of Dr. Brian R. Sinclair, design architect for the Centre for Human Values, thus I was awarded the contract. To complete the work within the given timeframe, I hired a colleague to assist with execution of the design.

Model Collaboration with Robyn Robertson

This model was based on the design for a residential unit, set into a mountain-side. As the model was created with white foamcore and cardstock, my strategy for photographing the structure included lighting the internal building in order to create shadows and thus greater definition in the images. 06

Above is a sample of potential projected future growth within the Banff Trail Station TOD in NW Calgary. Graphics were developed to demonstrate to current stakeholders the long term potential of the area.

As part of a strategy to solidify TOD design in Calgary, the above graphics and principles were developed by my work group.

Expanding on my undergraduate experience in urban studies, a planning internship with the City of Calgary, Established Communities, focused primarily on developing transit oriented development (TOD) strategies. The above graphics are a sample of work completed during my internship.

Created from hot glue and ice, this table lamp is intended to function as a light sculpture in the daylight, and as a lamp in the evening. I wanted to design a lamp that engages multiple types of lighting conditions, contrary to the standard twilight hour design of the conventional lamp. In the sunlight the semi-translucent layers of glue act to reflect and glow, appearing almost crystallized in nature. The peculiar material choice evolved out of experiments in an architecture studio course two years ago. Having noticed that hot glue was able to maintain a form once dried, my academic partner and I determined that the ice cubes could be glued in order to make a larger sculpture. Using this technique, once the ice melts and drains, the hot glue remains in an irregular yet firm state.

The installation created a barrier for morning commuters on the pedestrian suspension bridge at Prince’s Island Park, Calgary Alberta. The underlying connotations of the plastic and foam cup are similar as both are commonly understood as environmentally detrimental. Utilizing nonrecoverable cups in the context of the river setting with the central cityscape framing the project allowed for an added commentary.
