Grace Lutheran Church A worshipping community of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

October 2018 “Grace Greetings”

Mission Statement:

We are a community of believers in Christ called to be servants to all people.

“Jesus Freak—Feeding, Healing, Raising the Dead” This summer, I read a book with the above title by Sara Miles, whom you might know as

the author of “Take This Bread”—about her radical conversion to Christianity which started

with her randomly walking into a church one morning and taking communion for the first

time.

In “Jesus Freak,” Sara tells more stories of her ministry at her church’s food pantry. In

doing so, she highlights how her (and the other volunteers) serving food to those who don’t

have it is not the extent of what goes on there every week. There is so much more to their

ministry and others’ ministry to them.

The book is divided up into three main parts: Feeding, Healing, and Raising the Dead.

The whole of the book was an uplifting easy read, but I found myself struck most by the

Healing chapter. Here is some of what she says about prayer:

“And what I learned, among other things, is that prayer does not cure

tuberculosis or Down syndrome. Prayer does not cure mental illness. Prayer

can’t even cure a common cold.

And so, when theses things happen, we all rage and weep: What good is

prayer? Why did God do this to me? Why do I deserve cancer, when I’m a

nonsmoking vegetarian and practice positive thinking? Why did my mother

have a stroke, when she worked hard her whole life and never hurt anyone?

Why did my baby die? Why, as the people in the Gospel ask Jesus, is this man

blind? Is it his fault, or his parents’ fault? Who is being punished?

[Jesus] shrugs off our desire to establish supernatural cause and effect, to

scapegoat and assign blame for illness, to regulate human suffering by

formulas that will explain how the good people can be protected. ‘Neither this

man or his parents sinned,’ says Jesus, patiently. ‘He was born blind so the works

of God could be revealed in him.’

Jesus’ answer, I fear, is the answer to all the questions of our lives. Sickness, war,

falling in love, going to the grocery store: everything happens so that God’s

work might be revealed. But it’s up to us to pray—to keep our eyes open—if

we’re to discover what that means.

Prayer can’t cure. All prayer can do is heal, because healing comes

embedded in relationship, and prayer is one of the deepest forms of

relationship—with God and with other people. And through relationship, there

can be healing in the absence of a cure.” (p.85)

We all have the ability to pray, to create and maintain relationship, and therefore to

heal ourselves, others, and the world. Go and heal!

God Bless,

Pastor Leslie Scanlon

From the Council We bid farewell to Rick Pabst and Juanita

Urps at our September Council meeting,

accepting their resignations from Council as

they each move from Tidewater. While their

leadership and devotion to Christ’s work in

our community will certainly be missed, we

welcomed two new members to Council.

Per our constitution, Council elected Walt

Anderson and Bob Masters to fill the

vacancies through the end of the year.

Additionally, La Quita Opperman was

elected to serve as our Vice President, and

Kathie Rokitski was elected to serve as our

Secretary. When you next see Walt, Bob, La

Quita, and Kathie, please thank them for

their willingness to serve in these key

leadership roles!

We also reviewed nine potential welcoming

statements written and submitted by

Council members. We plan to review and

refine these draft welcome statements on

September 29 th, then survey the

congregation early in October on both the

welcoming statement and the possible RIC

designation. Are we loving and accepting

of ALL of God’s children? Are we willing to

make a public commitment, clear to

anyone who visits us or finds us on the web,

that a person’s race, sexual orientation,

gender identity, addiction, physical health,

mental health, imprisonment, or socio-

economic status will not exclude them from

Christ’s table at our church?

We continued our budget planning for 2019

in preparation for our Annual Meeting on

November 4th. We approved the use of the

Page 5: “Grace Greetings”

5

Pastor’s Compensation Fund (balance of

$64,171 as of July 31, 2018) to cover the un-

budgeted 2018 payroll fees (estimated as

$1,252 for 2018) and accounting service

fees (estimated as $2,830 for 2018), both of

which will be incorporated into our 2019

budget. Lastly, we approved the

continued use of our building by Joys of

Recovery (AA) for this program year.

May the peace of Christ be with you

always!

From the Preschool

The preschool is full of young energy again. We welcomed our new families and our

returning ones. We are very blessed to be given the opportunity to teach your children.

I am very pleased to say that this year we have 36 children enrolled. We have two 3 year

old classes, one 4 year old class and one two year old class. All of the 3 and 4 year old

classes are full. We actually needed to hire an assistant! We are currently providing

employment to 4 teachers , an assistant as well as a director. We feel very blessed.

We still have space in the 2 year old class. So please, spread the word!!!

As you have probably noticed, we are working on introducing new programs that help

parents in the community. One of these programs is our Lunch Bunch. It takes place

Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12-1:30 and it gives parents a bit of extra time to finish a

few more items on their To- Do list.

Our fund raisers will also be a bit different this year. We will do a fundraiser at Y Not pizza at

5257 Providence Road, Virginia Beach 23464. It is about a 5 minute drive from church.

Please join us to have dinner with our staff, board members and Grace Preschool families.

The restaurant then gives us a percentage of the income received for the evening. As soon

as we get further information (working on getting the 24th of October confirmed) we will

post it online on our website as well as on Facebook. Please follow us closely.

Another fundraiser which will happen in December will be a parents’ night out. Further

information will be posted in the November newsletter, but volunteers are always welcome.

The month of October is filled with fun for our children. We will have a pumpkin patch in the

backyard, as well as a trunk or treat on October 31st at 9:00. If you would like to decorate

the trunk of your car or simple come to see our wonderful costumes, please do not hesitate.

We are happy to announce that three of our families are receiving financial aid through

the Lisa Marie Justice Scholarship. Please keep us in mind when you consider gifts and

memorials. Though your generosity you can make an impact on a young child's life.

If you have any questions or suggestion, please do not hesitate to contact me.
