Melville Louis Kossuth Dewey• Dewey at the age of 21 created the Dewey

Decimal System at Amherst College which has been used to revolutionize the field of library study.

• He helped to formulated library education at Columbia University and this was the birthplace of library school in 1887.

• Dewey system is still used throughout the world.

Dewey, Dewey, where does this go?• System used numbers, letters, coordinate

materials on the same subject and related subjects to make items easier to find on the shelves.

• System is divided into ten main classes.

The more numbers the more specific the subject.

How do you find it?• A book is arranged by decimal place and the

books are filed according to the digits.

• Large libraries give books unique numbers that serve as the address for locating each book on the shelf.
