OK, so it's for Halloween, too . . . but for us

Lutherans, the last Sunday in October is

Reformation Sunday, a day on which we remember

the work of Dr. Martin Luther, who, on October

31st, 1517, posted a document for scholarly debate

on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg,

Germany. This document, “Luther's 95 Theses,”

outlined not just debate topics, but a revolution

against the abuses of the Church of his day.

The issue of the sale of indulgences [a letter

granting forgiveness from sin and release from time

in purgatory, or from hell] to support either public or

church-related building projects, the work of the

church, the support of governmental figures, or just

plain greed on the part of professional sellers of

such things, was something that really troubled

Luther. One of the first advertising slogans ever

was: "As soon as a coin in the coffer rings, a soul

from purgatory springs!" This slogan, attributed to

Johann Tetzel [the Vatican's chief and most

successful indulgence sales drone], was extremely

persuasive because it was short, easy to

understand, and it rhymed! Abuses and distortions

like this one were widespread, and since ordinary

people had no real access to the Bible to see what

God's real intent for them was, there was no way

for people to know what to do. They had to simply

believe what they were told. The Church, the

political leaders, and even "Rhymin' Johann," all

said it was true.

You have to admit that it must have felt good to pay

a few bucks to get yourself (or even a dead

relative) out of "the hot place!" The problem was

that it wasn't true! Not just because Luther said it

wasn't true, but because it contradicted the clear

language of the Bible. The church leadership was

displacing God's command, will, and the gospel for

a crass money-making scheme. Luther knew that

if the sale of indulgences was allowed to continue,

it would result in real spiritual damage and even

the condemnation of countless souls who believed

and trusted the word of the church—a church that

had been given over to special-interest groups,

powerful people, and secular and church

politicians in exchange for money, power,

influence and social agendas. Folks, I'm sure glad

that could never happen today! Oh, wait a

minute...I think it has! If you know what I mean!

The importance of understanding the Bible and

allowing it to speak to us, rather than making it

conform to worldly values, politics and world view,

is as important as it ever was. So, find a Bible

Study to join, read the Bible for yourself, attend

worship and hear God's Word clearly read and

preached!

A favorite hymn, written by Martin Luther, is "Lord,

Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word," is usually sung

on Trinity or Reformation Sundays (in addition, of

course, to "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God"!). The

first verse of the hymn is something to grab

onto: "Lord, Keep us steadfast in your Word; Curb

those who by deceit or sword, would wrest the

kingdom from your Son, and bring to naught all He

has done."

Be strong in God’s Word!

Pastor Hill

Bread for the World Every year since 1975, Bread for the World's annual "Offering of Letters" campaign has offered Christians and other concerned citizens a unique way to play a crucial role in shaping key anti-hunger legislation. Conducted in churches around the U.S., the Offering of Letters has provided an opportunity for thousands of Christians beyond the Bread for the World membership to participate in a special ministry on behalf of hungry people. Urge Congress to sustain and strengthen programs that help end hunger. In 2013 , Bread for the World members are asking President Obama to set a goal and work with Congress to enact a plan to end hunger. With time-tested, cost-effective programs, our nation can end widespread hunger in the United States and make significant progress in reducing world hunger. As part of Bread for the World's 2013 Offering of Letters, "A Place at the Table," we will also urge Congress to create a circle of protection around programs that have proven effective in reducing hunger and poverty in the United States and abroad. Jesus said he was the Bread of Life. So when we eat, it's like Jesus being in us and he stays there and helps to make us happy. In His Service Grace of Calvary Solheim Lutheran Home has invited us to send 2 delegates to their Annual Meeting of the Corporation, Sunday, October 13, 2013. Registration, Appetizers and Fellowship @ 3:30PM, Meeting @ 4:00PM. If you are interested in attending, please call the Church Office to register before October 4th. Lutheran CORE has acknowledged receipt of our gift to them of $250 to cover the travel expenses for Steve Shipman’s trip to California to speak with us. The ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal has acknowledged receipt of our recent gift of $570 so they can continue their effective and efficient response to disasters around the world.

A difficult decision had to be made on Friday, September 13

th, when State Licensing said we

had to temporarily bring our enrollment down to 15 to fit in the preschool classroom #6 during our construction. This task was not an easy one since everyone in our program is like family to us. Sally, Pastor and I met with our parents as they came in to pick up their children and talked to them about our situation. The rest of our parents who did not have students in that day were called after 6pm, and when it got too late in the evening, the remainder were called on Saturday. We tried to help families out by connecting them with other parents or teachers that could help during this difficult time for everyone. We are now delighted to share some wonderful news! First, our construction crew has been working longer hours, as well as weekends. This is making our target goal for our building to be done by the first of the year a very obtainable goal. Thank you to Chad and his crew for all their hard work! Secondly, we met again with licensing. They have been very helpful in trying to get us up and fully running again as soon as possible. We now have some additional great news to share! We will become a Heritage School starting the first of the year. Being a Heritage School means that we will not only offer the great level of care that we show to all our students by our continuing homework help and loving Christ-directed guidance, but we will now teach Spanish to our students as well as the culture, customs and traditions that make learning this language fun! We have two parents who have said they will donate the Rosetta Stone language learning program to our students for our computers. What a wonderful blessing they are giving to our program and our students!

By becoming a Heritage School, we not only make licensing happy but have now become part of the Department of Education. In the meanwhile, we are making sure we are getting all the ground work done, so that we can give everyone who is not currently in our program, and was before, a call to let them know when this will all be complete. Please email me at [email protected] so that I can keep you informed about our progress. Thank you again for the overwhelming support with your prayers and your phone calls. They are all greatly appreciated. Sincerely in Christ, Anna Marie Hill Director Before and Afterschool Care

Just A Note from Dawn L. Hayes-Stewart

Director of Music Ministries

Hello, Fellow GOCers:

By now, we are hopefully enjoying the cooler weather of the Fall. And with that cooler weather always comes the planning of the holidays - Reformation, All Hallows Eve (Halloween), All Saints Day, Thanksgiving and of course, Christmas!

This month, please make certain you join us for The Blessing of the Animals on October 6. This will be an outdoor service so our precious four-legged family members can enjoy the blessings from Pastor and we can celebrate a delightful service honoring the many blessings God gives us. Those of you who have attended this service in the past know that we close the service with a very special song; this year, we will have a wonderful arrangement of this song featuring Heart of Worship and Voices of Grace to be "sent forth by God's blessing"!

Reformation Sunday, October 27, is a special day in the life of the Lutheran Church. We all know how Martin Luther's nailing of the 95 Theses to the door of the sanctuary established Christ as the Cornerstone of our faith. This year, we will celebrate that significant event with more special music provided by Heart of Worship AND Voices of Grace, and a unique anthem featuring both groups that brings together the full spectrum of our traditions! Bring a friend or neighbor on that day and help us honor our heritage!

Speaking of the fall, Voices of Grace, our sanctuary choir, has resumed weekly rehearsals on Thursday evenings in the sanctuary @ 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome - if you know anyone interested in singing with us, invite them to come along! In addition to our special Reformation service, Voices of Grace will sing for All Saints Day on November 3 and for our Thanksgiving Eve service on Wednesday, November 27.

We are very much looking forward to our Christmas Choral Festival, scheduled for Sunday, December 15 @ 6:00 p.m. This new annual event (our first time was December, 2012!) involves all of the

musical groups in our congregation (even children from our Afterschool care program), as well as several of our soloists and small groups—even some special guests and friends. It is an evening giving glory to the newborn Savior, and a wonderful time to fellowship with members, friends, school parents, staff and children—definitely a time to bring family, friends and neighbors!

Come be a part of us—join us—we want you to make a joyful noise with us!

In His Service,

Dawn

**So, why do we wear RED clothing on Reformation Sunday? We invite everyone to wear the liturgical color RED, on October 27th, because RED represents the Holy Spirit. Luther believed that the Reformation was a direct result of the Holy Spirit moving him and others to action. This day is a celebration of the Holy Spirit that continues to move us toward the grace and mercy of God even today.

*As autumn arrives, people in various places may notice something odd. A procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, is led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of the Animals. This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. Join us as we celebrate God’s gift of companion animals. Receive a Certificate of Blessing with your pet’s name. Bring a pet food donation in support of local homeless animal charities.

We cordially invite you to worship God with us and celebrate the New Life God gives us in the raising of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Children are an integral part of our worship service. Worship activities and Bible story books are available for children aged 3 thru 4th grade to use during all services. A Parents’ Room, with sound, is available adjoining the sanctuary.

Grace of Calvary Lutheran Church & Preschool, a family oriented church founded in 1956, is a parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America supporting programs such as Lutheran Social Services of California, the Alhambra Retirement Community, the Lutheran Food Bank in West Covina, The Shepherd’s Pantry, Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Immigration Services, and Habitat for Humanity International.

The Preschool is an exciting, educational ministry open to all children in the community. Daily classes are taught by a faculty dedicated to both the educational and spiritual growth of the children. The classes include a computer lab for the children. Weekly chapel is led by the Pastor. The Preschool addresses the social aspect of the children’s growth from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Active members of the congregation may receive up to a 25% discount off tuition.

Our Youth Ministry offers activities including Summer Camp at El Camino Pines, Christmas Caroling to the sick and homebound, other Christian service projects and just getting together for the fun of it!

The women’s group, Miriam Circle, meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month. They celebrate by enjoying lunch and pursuing educational and spiritual growth. Miriam Circle provides meals for shut-ins, funds for various ministries, as well as family visits to those in need.
