Week 6 Day 1 Topic: colours

MATHS TEACHER DEMONSTRATION: addition in English (10 minutes) The learners engage in workbook

activities from the DBE p.24.

The teacher withdraws several learners

to form a small group at a table (or space

in the class where she can work with

them).

The teacher demonstrates addition 1-10

in English to the learners. To ensure that

the learners understand the English

words and are able to link it to the

mathematical concept, counting discs

and a counting strip.

LITERACY ACTIVITY: Colours (20 minutes) Introduction: (5 minutes)

Learners sing the song ' Colours of Balloons" from the

DBE workbook p. 27. The teacher can show the

learners what a balloon is in the native language. She

then puts up the BrainBoosters poster of colours and

points to each colour and the learners says the rhyme

again.

Presentation: (10 minutes)

The teacher holds up the BrainBoosters book of

colours. She pages through the book while saying the

English word first then showing the colour. Learners

first just listen to the pronunciation of the word.

The teacher page through the book a second time.

The learners this time round hold up the

corresponding colour card (this was cut out from the

BrainBoosters learner book the day before). They put

the card down upside down and read the

corresponding word in English at the back.

Conclusion: (5 minutes)

Teacher and learners play the game 'tippy-tippy

touches in the class where the teacher calls out the

colour word in English and the learners have to touch

an object in the class that matches the colour.

MATH TEACHER DEMONSTRATION: addition (10 minutes) The learners engage in DBE workbook

activities p. 25.

Re-inforcement of colours learned the day before.

The teacher holds up the BrainBoosters book of

colours. She pages through the book while saying the

English word first then showing the colour. Learners

first just listen to the pronunciation of the word.

The teacher page through the book a second time.

Conclusion: (5 minutes)

Teacher and learners can play the game 'tippy-tippy

touches in the class again (see the previous day) or

engage in an alternative activity that involves colour

i.e drawing on p. 27 of the DBE workbook.

ACADEMIC LITERACY ACTIVITY (10 minutes)

Introduction: (10 minutes) While the learners engage in workbook

activities from BrainBooster learner book

p.17, the teacher withdraws several

learners to form a small group at a table

(or space in the class where she can work

with them).

The teacher demonstrates addition (1-

10) in English to the learners. To ensure

that the learners understand the English

words and are able to link it to the

mathematical concept, counting discs

and a counting strip.

Presentation: (15 minutes)

Whole group activity: addition

Learners sit at their tables. They take out

their black discs and counting strip. The

teacher holds up the addition sums (from

the teacher book) and the learners do the

sums with their support material (refer to

the BB program for full instructions).

Conclusion:

Do p.26 of the DBE book.

Answer the following questions about

the pictures on p.27:

If I add the number of socks and the

number shirts, how many garments will I

have?

Week 6 Day 5 Topic: colours

LITERACY ACTIVITY: Colours (30 minutes) Introduction: (10 minutes)

Learners and teachers engage in shared reading

activity. Use big books or other books available

regarding the concept of colour.

Teacher asks learners questions in English which they

have to respond to i.e what is the colour of the

shirts/socks/pants in the pictures of the book.

Learners answer: the shirts are green/ the socks are

blue/the pants is yellow etc.

Presentation: (10 minutes)

Interactive group game

Learners play a game with their colour and word

cards.

One learner (the leader) places a colour card from

his/her pack of cards on the table. The other group

members have to look for the corresponding card

from their own packs and places it in front of them on

the table. They say the word out loud as they place it

on the table. Learners take turns to be the leader.

The game is repeated but this time around the leader

reads the words and peers find the corresponding

word card.

Conclusion: (10 minutes)

1. Learners prepare for the activity of next week

(tear out cards and put it in zip-lock bag). This is

put away for use the next week.

2. Learners read the words from the reading list.

3. Learners complete any of the incomplete class

work exercises done earlier in the week.
