Unit Opener: Page 2-3

• The “Stadium Corral”

• Ripples are electrons• Act like “waves”• Very important discovery• Equations predict the high and low points of the waves• Same equations / theory predicted lasers and micro circuitry used

in advanced computers today!

Lab Safety

Page 9: GRADE 9 SCIENCE Unit 1: Atoms, Elements and Compounds.

Lab Safety•Safety MUST be our top priority!

•Need to know the rules BEFORE the lab and use them IN the lab!

• If not something like this could happen to one of you.

Page 10: GRADE 9 SCIENCE Unit 1: Atoms, Elements and Compounds.

Lab Safety•Activity 1-1A (Page 9)•Create a sub heading and record your ideas in your note book

Appendix A: Lab Safety Rules

• We will be quizzed on these rules

• You will have to pass a quiz on these rules to complete our next lab activity

• Read the rules and complete the practice quiz that follows the rules.

WHMIS• Stands for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

• It is very important to know these symbols, especially if you are working around dangerous products.

• Video

WHMIS

Page 16: GRADE 9 SCIENCE Unit 1: Atoms, Elements and Compounds.

• WHMIS is useful because you can very quickly see what type of hazard a chemical substance presents.

MSDS

MSDS stands for material safety data sheet

• An MSDS gives us much more information! This helps people working with chemicals to remain safe on the job.

• An MSDS gives us much more information! This helps people working with chemicals to remain safe on the job.

MSDS• Each chemical substance has an MSDS. This tells you important things like:

• Possible health effects of the chemical

• What to wear when handling it

• First aid procedures in case of emergency

• How to store and dispose of it properly

• What to do if it catches fire

Page 20: GRADE 9 SCIENCE Unit 1: Atoms, Elements and Compounds.

WHMIS vs MSDS• WHMIS only tells us HOW a controlled product is harmful.

• MSDS tells you specific information about the controlled product.

MSDS Activity

In Groups of 2:Answer the questions provided relating to your MSDS sheet:

Homework:p. 15 #1 – 3, 6. (Use pages 10-13 to answer. We did not discuss all of these safety considerations!!)
