Students have learned how to: Use proper posture and ergonomics. Locate and use letter and number keys with cor-rect left and right hand placement. Locate and use the correct finger for the space bar, return, and shift key. Students are beginning to gain proficiency and speed in touch typing by increasing accuracy and speed. Speed is not necessar-ily a factor, but a rough guide to typing speed is to add 5 words per minute per grade level. At the end of the school year fourth grade students should be typing about 20 wpm, and fifth grade 25. Student should also strive to achieve 90% accuracy on all lessons. Fourth and fifth grade students have moved on to internment lessons which includes:

Common English Words, Easy Home Row Words, Easy Top Row Words Easy Bottom Row Words, Shift Key and Capitalization, Sentences Speed Drills, Basic Punctuation, Paragraphs, Advanced Punctuation, Intermediate Wrap-up

Please allow your child to show you what they have learned on your home computer especially if he/she is behind on lessons in class. This is a great way for them to practice their newly acquired keyboarding skills and build confidence. Students can access interactive learning activities from my web page.

Helping Your Child with Test- Taking

Testing is used in schools for two main purposes. One is to find out how well an individ-ual student is learning in the classroom. For instance, teachers can test how well a child is responding to reading instruction by using assessments that measure specific skills necessary for fluent reading. The other purpose is to find out how well the school is meeting local and national benchmarks for student achievement.

Parent Tips:

Make sure that your child attends school regularly. Meet with your child's teacher to discuss his progress. If you have concerns about the test or testing situation, talk with your child's teacher. Provide a quiet, comfortable place for studying at home. Make sure that your child is well-rested and eats a well-balanced diet. Encourage your child.

brada. Anime a su hijo.

NEWS FROM THE NEST

As we near the last quarter of the year, now is the perfect time to set some goals to finish the year strong and on a positive note. The best way to help children achieve success is to create goals that are SMART. In fact, the first step toward improvement is mapping out the goal correctly. Once a goal is in mind, make sure it contains the following components.  Specific – What do you want to accomplish? Focus on the details. Measurable – All goals should have a way to evaluate whether or not they were accomplished. Attainable – Your goal must be something you are capable of reaching. Relevant – Set goals that are important to you and your lifestyle. Time‐bound – Make sure that you have a time set as a “deadline” so your goal is not unending.  Goals can focus on grades and academics, attendance, friendship, behavior, and more. It is impor‐

tant that both children and adults frequently check their progress after setting the goal. Write the

goal down, and place it somewhere visible. The constant reminder will enhance focus and aid in

motivation.

NEWS FROM THE NEST

Our Kindergarteners are busy preparing for the last quarter of school. Kindergarteners will be expected to read more complex decodable texts with 95% accuracy. You can help your child build reading fluency at home by having your child read daily. Kindergartners should also know sight words from memory. Please continue to practice sight words on a daily basis. Kindergarteners are continuing to build upon their knowledge of composing and decomposing numbers to solve addition and subtraction prob-lems up to 10. At the end of March we will begin to learn about place value with tens and ones for our teen numbers. We are excited to see how our students will continue to grow as we SPRING into the 4th Quarter.

The weather is chang-ing, the days are getting longer, and the full sched-ule of spring sports has begun. We appreciate your continued support as we enter into this busy time of the year. In Reading, we will be completing Core Knowl-edge reader titled Sir Gus and beginning our final unit of study which is a nonfiction text titled The War of 1812. This is a very challenging unit, but the students enjoy learning about this important part of our history. There are some significant changes with this unit. One example is our weekly spelling words will increase from 15 to 20 words. We are currently working on our new Guidebooks unit titled the Ox-Cart Man. There is a nonfiction focus for this unit; therefore there will be a lot of vocabulary building. This unit will connect to Social Studies focusing on concepts of economics and changes over time. Upon returning from Mardi Gras, we will begin Math Module 7 Problem Solving with Length, Money, and Data. This is a CRITICAL module with a strong focus on WORD PROBLEMS. We will be working with students to develop the ability to read, understand, and solve word problems. It is im-portant that students complete their math homework nightly as they work through this unit since word problems and solutions can be presented in a variety of ways. We are looking forward to meeting with you all at Parent Teacher conferences, March 21- 22, 2019. If you have any questions, feel free to contact your child’s teacher.

Literacy begins at home! It’s never too early to begin reading to your child. The time spent reading aloud will create feelings of togetherness and closeness. Here are some helpful hints for reading aloud with your child at home: Make reading aloud part of the daily routine. Be physically close to your child as you read. Cud-

dle up! Get into the characters of the story. Alter your voice

to fit each character. Read and reread the same book. Look for picture

clues and details. Have your child make predictions about the book

before you begin reading. Ask questions during the story: who, what, where,

why, and how. Check to see if your child can retell the story with a

beginning, middle, and end.

Fantastic first graders have been working hard to grow as readers and writers! We are finishing up our narratives and infor-mative writings. Please read a variety of these texts when you read with your child at home. With non-fiction, your child should understand the main idea and key details that support the main idea. They should also use the non-fiction text features to help them un-derstand the text as well. Ask your child which reading strategies he/she has learned about in class. Remind your child to use the reading strategies when he/she comes to an unknown word. In math, we are learning how to add two digit numbers up to 40 and solve word problems using the Read, Draw, and Write strategy. In the fourth quarter, we will extend what was learned in Module 4. Students will learn to add within 100, solve word problems within 20, and compare two-digit num-bers, using similar strategies already learned.

NEWS FROM THE NEST

We cannot believe we have arrived in the month of March! Our 4th graders have been working hard all month long to wrap up the 3rd quarter. In ELA, we began our new Guidebook Unit: The American Revolu-tion. Our Culminating Writing Task question that the students will focus on is, “Were the colonists justified in declaring their independ-ence and fighting the Revolutionary War?” The students have been assigned to see the point of view of Loyalists or Patriots, and take notes throughout the unit that will help guide them to write a multi-paragraph for their Culminating Writing Task. Our historians in Social Studies have started Unit 5 which focuses on Progress and Change within the United States. Topic one focused on the Industrialization Revolution and how many people migrated to an urban area. The students delved deeper into exploring how life was like for families working in manufacturing industries. We will start topic two later this week which focuses on immigration. The mathematicians in our 4th grade classroom are wrapping up their Module 5 on fractions. All month long the students have been comparing fractions, converting fractions greater than 1 into mixed numbers, adding and subtracting fractions, multiplying fractions, read-ing a line plot, and applying their knowledge of fractions into everyday problems. We are encouraging our students to study their multiplica-tion facts every day! You can create games, use flash cards, or sing a song to help them study their multiplication facts. Finally, our 4th grade Scientists have wrapped up our unit in EN-ERGY! They had a blast creating their roller coasters and exploring energy. We will begin our next unit on Earth and Human Activity. Our next anchor phenomena will focus on how developing countries now have more cell phone users than the world’s richest countries. As we are nearing the beginning of the 4th quarter, it is imperative that the students continue to go over their FIG’s with you at the begin-ning of the week, read nightly, and continue to go over their notes within their study binder. We cannot wait to see how our upcoming month will turn out!

Over the last several weeks your fifth grader has wrapped up Module 4. Throughout this module they became experts on multiplying and dividing fractions. As we return from the Mardi Gras holiday we will begin Module 5. This module focuses on finding volume of rectangular prims and naming shapes based on their characteristics. Students are also preparing for the upcoming LEAP 20205 assessment which will take place in April. We have wrapped up our study of Water on Earth and will be beginning Unit #5 in science when we return from the Mardi Gras holiday. During this unit students will explore and investigate Earth’s place in the universe and why it’s placement is important to survival of animals. We will also complete several practice assessments in preparation for LEAP 2025. We will continue reading The Birchbark House and discussing how the character responds to challenges. We will also be going over Pedro's Journal that is being read at home. This a historical fiction text that revolves around a ship boy who is traveling and experienc-ing the New World with Christopher Columbus.

In third grade science, we will be starting our last unit on Fossils. Scientists will be explor-ing life cycles of various living organisms. We will also be analyzing and interpreting data

from fossils to provide evidence of organisms and the envi-ronments in which they lived long ago.

During the month of March we will be working in Module 6 which includes graphing, line plots, and solving multiple step word problems related to the data presented in picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots. We have al-ready begun to incorporate review skills and test taking strategies to prepare for the upcoming LEAP 2025 stan-dardized tests.

In ELA (English Language Arts) we are in the midst of our third unit: Because of Winn-Dixie. Students are expressing their understanding by explaining how char-acters change throughout Because of Winn-Dixie based on the interactions/relationships formed throughout the book. Students are also engaging in independent reading of texts based on similar themes to further develop their under-standing.

In Social Studies, we will begin our last unit on Louisiana’s future. This unit will focus on Louisiana’s econ-omy, challenges, and our unique cultural identity. We will start by investigating what an economy is and the role Lou-isiana plays in our country’s economy. We will also con-tinue to review test taking strategies to get ready for LEAP 2025.

We are looking forward to conferencing with you at the end of the quarter conferences, which will be held on March 21 and 22.

Second graders are learning about the 3
