TEACHERS DAY CELEBRATED IN SHALOM HILLS INTERNATIONAL
SCHOOL
“The best teacher is the one who suggests rather than dogmatizes, and inspires the
listener with the wish to teach herself/himself.”
Shalom Hills International School celebrated Teacher‟s Day with great joi de vivre on 5th September‟12. This
day is celebrated as a mark of tribute to the contribution made by teachers to the society and also to
commemorate a great visionary, Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, who was a staunch believer of education, a
well-known diplomat, scholar, President of India and above all a Teacher.
Mutual affection, appreciation and understanding cement every relationship and lend it strength. That is the description that fits the student-teacher equation in Shalom Hills to the tee. For that reason, the „special connect‟ between Shalom faculty and students was manifest in abundance in the cultural programme that the students had put up for the teachers‟ enjoyment. The non-stop entertainment started with a beautiful message and poem dedicated to the teachers and their
immeasurable contribution to the cause of education. Senior students performed with their usual nimble-
footedness and panache on the latest chartbusters. Amid laughter, music and excited chatter, the teachers played
musical chairs and other games. The high point was the live performance by the school band on the popular
numbers of
„Rock On‟. Ms. Madhuri Parti, the Strategic Head-Shalom Group of Schools conveyed special greetings and
blessings on the behalf of the Managing Director through which the teachers were encouraged to become a cut
above the others, A Special Shalom teacher.

teachers as they danced on evergreen numbers from Rajesh Khanna movies. Another group of teachers paid a
tribute to the first family of Bollywood, „The Kapoors‟ through a medley of songs.

sprawling school gardens. The teachers went back with their hearts and stomachs full and spirits high after an
enjoyable and eventful day.
Street play on „Female Foeticide‟ put up by Shalom students in
Summer Fields School on 7thNovember‟12
“No nation, no society, no community can hold its head high and claim to be part of the civilized world if it condones
the practice of discriminating against one half of humanity represented by women,” Dr. Manmohan Singh.
Street plays are a powerful medium of communication because of their mass appeal and the socially relevant message they
convey. Furthermore, the audience, on the whole identify themselves with the characters. Yet another reason for their
popularity is that it can be presented without using any props, stage, makeup, costumes etc.

Rangoli Making Competition 12th
Oct‟12-Class I & II
„Rangoli‟ signifies creative expression of art by means of colours and is also considered a symbol of good-luck. Rangoli is
made on the entrance doors of homes, to welcome guests and goddess Laxmi. The talented juniors of Classes I & II thought of
celebrating this festive season in a very joyful and colourful manner by way of an Intra Class Rangoli Making Competition
held on 12th October ‟12. For the competition, the children were divided into small groups of five children and were given one
hour to complete their vibrant rangoli. Spices, glitter, pulses, rice, flower petals and even pebbles! These were just some of the
materials used by participants to make, adorn and embellish the rangoli design. Various meaningful themes were portrayed by
arranging the rangoli materials in different patterns. It was a delightful experience and spectacle to watch the artistic creativity
of the students.
Rangoli making 7th November
Rangoli is a traditional Indian art of decorating the entrance to a house. Diwali is celebrated, to herald the coming of the goddess
Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Rangoli is created at the entrance of the house to welcome the goddess herself.
Traditional rangolis were made of rice powder and with time, people started using variety of colours. The reason why our
ancestors used rice powder was to feed birds, insects and the other lives that thrive in the soil. Rangoli is a timeless tradition that
is followed all over India. Children with the help of teachers created beautiful patterns to welcome the festival of lights.
Class Decoration & Lantern making
As a part of festivity children decorated the class rooms with hand painted diyas and made hanging lanterns with the help of
teachers.
The competition portrayed the imaginative and the ingenious side of the students. Prizes were awarded to the best rangoli
from each section based on choice of material, pattern and intricacy of design.
Students of Humanities go on an educational trip to National Museum and
National Gallery of
Modern Art, Delhi
on 14th
September'13
The students of Classes
XI-XII (Fine Arts and

National Art Gallery and National Museum on 14.9.13(Saturday) as part of the school's experiential learning
programme. It was a day long trip amply dotted with thrilling experiences and exciting moments. The senior graders
were accompanied by Mr. M.K Quadri and Ms. Shikha Nagpal.
National Gallery of Modern Art was founded in 1954 as the premier museum of modern art of the then newly
independent nation; it houses and showcases masterpieces of the changing art forms of modern India spanning more
than one hundred and fifty years. The main objective was to inculcate in the students sensitivity, awareness and
understanding towards our art expressions which is necessary in them as the students of Fine Arts. The visit was a
deeply insightful and learning experience for the students as they were exposed to facts/exhibits which they found
highly engrossing and relevant to their discipline.
The next visit was to the National Museum of Delhi which was inaugurated in 1960 by Jawahar Lal Nehru. It exhibits
and showcases various archives, sculptors and historical remains from the period of Harappan Civilization to
Mauryas and Shungas period and also the contemporary tribal cultures. A guide chaperoned the students and
showed them the museum in chronological order. She gave the scholars useful and fascinating information about
some relatively lesser known facts relating to the exhibits. The visit drew to a close with all watching a movie on
'Harrappan Civilization' and 'Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali' in their sprawling AC auditorium.
The visit was almost an information revolution for the youngsters as they added interesting, lesser known and
unknown facts to their cache of subject knowledge by way of experiential learning.

theme like individual differences, humanity, peace etc- on which to conduct its assembly for a week.

same, thus start their day on a healthy note.
It was followed by an interesting demonstration of the story “Lesson Learned”, which was about a father and son,
who were discussing whether money is more important or happiness. After a quick rundown of the story and the
valuable lesson of life to be learnt from it, an amazing activity was conducted wherein 2 students from each class
were called and they were asked to pen down the “values” they have learnt from the assembly on a leaf and make a
necklace of these leaves and hence design a unique garland of values.
Finally, through the vote of thanks, each and every one present was thanked for their contribution.

forecast. The entire class also enacted a short play on the theme „Individual Differences‟. The basic plot of play
was how a teacher can change the life of a student by understanding that he is different from the rest of the
class.
By way of a health tip, Pranay conducted the laughing activity with the whole school and showed this simple way
of keeping our body healthy and giving a smiling start to our day. At the close of the assembly, an activity to
understand that it is not our differences that divide us; it is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those
differences was conducted by calling the names of best buddies from each class on the stage. Cassia brought the
day‟s assembly to a close with the rendition of the National Anthem.

Teacher’s Day celebrations in Shalom Hills International School
on 5th September’13
Teachers, I believe, are the most responsible and important members
of society because their professional and personal efforts affect the
fate of the earth.
~ Helen Caldicott
In Shalom Hills International School, Teacher‟s Day is the day when one can
look back, admire and get inspired by Dr. Radhakrishnan, a small town boy,
who grew up to become one of the most respected politicians and revered
national leader in the history of post Independence India.
Yet another reason why Teacher’s Day is eagerly awaited by both the
taught and the tutors is that on this day students realize what it means to be
a teacher and what it means to control the future of several students in their
classes and also teachers are reminded what it felt like when they were the
students and at the same time, they realize that teaching is a true calling from
God and re-dedicate themselves to this noblest of all professions.
Most importantly, in Shalom Hills International School it was a fun-dappled and excitement dotted day with the dear students having planned a day of riotous enjoyment for their much loved teachers. The celebrations planned by the
Student‟s Council on 5th Sept‟13 were laced with emotional and fun quotient in equal measures. The songs, games and poems dedicated to the teachers were a true index of the close rapport and special connect that exists between the teachers and the students of Shalom Hills.
The non-stop entertainment planned for the teachers did not end with the cultural
programme presented by the senior graders, it only paved way for an exclusive
„fun party‟ planned for the teachers after the students left. One interesting game
after the other spiced up the festivities with the dance and music teachers adding
more liveliness to the programme through their dances and songs. A sumptuous
lunch was relished by the teachers who appreciated the management and the
school principal for not only the day‟s special celebrations but also for making
teaching in Shalom Hills ‘a truly ‘once in a lifetime’ experience for all the
faculty members.
Shalom Hills International School celebrates Grandparents’ Day
Shalom Hills International School celebrated Grandparents Day on 5th October 2013
and paid a befitting salute to the greatest treasure of a family – the grandparents
through a cultural extravaganza put up by the students and teachers that day.
Through evocative dance sequels, emotive poems and loving messages dedicated to
the grandmoms and grandpas, the school paid a debt of gratitude to these staunch
pillars of our society and nation. An atmosphere drenched in emotions engulfed the
gathering when the young artists of Grade V captured the pain and trauma of partition
that had tainted the euphoria of India‟s Independence in 1947 through a soul-stirring dance drama titled „History
comes alive‟. A spoof on today‟s politicians put up by the Shalom teachers had all
doubled up with laughter and it was followed by the riotous satire „Rupee vs Dollar‟ which humorously
conveyed the fluctuating fortunes of the rupee in the face of the rising inflation. It
was a day laden with fun quotient as well as the grandparents were engaged in one
lively game after another. The zestful grandpas and grandmoms vied with one
another to tie a necktie at lightning speed, balance balloons while dancing etc.
Through their performance on a medley of songs which were the rage in the 70‟s and
80‟s, the teachers took the grandparents down the memory lane as they joined the
teachers and danced to the tunes of chartbuster songs.
