My School

I study in Apple School, Pokhara. It is among the best schools in the city. My school has a beautiful building. It has eighty large, well-ventilated classrooms, an auditorium, and a big hall.

The hall is used when the examination is held or when any guest visitor comes to deliver a lecture to the students. But our school is proud of what is called the science lab. The school has two playgrounds, one for the junior students and the other for the seniors. The students play games in the playground. The games are compulsory for the students.

Our school has a fine library. It is contains more than 5,000 useful books as well as newspapers and magazines for students. A large number of students who are fond of books visit the library every day.

Our school has a trained and efficient staff. Our principal is an experienced man. No other teacher works harder than him. He is an excellent teacher. He teaches us English. He is very kind and sympathetic.

Our teachers want us to cultivate the habit of reading. So they make of us read one extra book every month. They also ask us to develop various hobbies. Some of us collect stamps, some look after the school garden, etc.

Our school is very popular. Students from all parts of Janakpur come to study here.

TheTiger

The tiger is a ferocious but beautiful wild animal that looks like a big cat. It has a long tail. Its body is strong and brownish with black stripes on it. Its feet are padded and have sharp claws. Its teeth are also sharp and strong. A tiger can be about three to four feet high and eight to ten feet long.

The tiger is a carnivorous animal. It lives in dense forests. It hides quietly, and suddenly jumps upon its preys in the forest. It hunts by night and sleeps by day. It kills animals only when it is hungry. When it does not find its prey in the jungle, it can even come to villages to steal calves of cows and buffaloes.

Tigers are generally found in the forests of Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. There are also big sized tigers in African jungles. In Nepal, they are found in Chitwan National Park and Parsa Wildlife Reserve.

All over the world, killing tigers is prohibited. They are kept in protected areas such as national parks, wildlife reserves and zoos.

My Role Model

Three years ago when I changed my school, I met Mrs. Kamala Dhakal. She is the principal of our school. Her smart appearance and warm, friendly expression made me like her immediately.

She is around fifty years old and has curly hair with few gray strands. She is thin and tall. Although she dresses simply she always looks elegant.

She is a very fair person who treats everyone at the school with equal respect. She is very calm and she never shouts at students. She handles every situation very well. Her gentle, caring manner makes her popular with the children.

Mrs. Dhakal has no children of her own. However, she says that she feels like a mother to all of the children in her school. Besides taking care of various administrative tasks every day, she always takes time to talk to the teachers and parents. In addition, she often visits our classrooms and asks about our problems.

Our principal is a dedicated professional and a wonderful role model, not only for us but for the teachers as well.

MyFavouriteFestival

Many festivals are celebrated around the world. Some major festivals in the world are Dashain, Tihar, Christmas, Eid and Halloween. I like to celebrate every festival but Tihar or Deepawali is my favourite festival.

It is the festival generally celebrated by the people of Hindu religion. It is the festival of music, dance and lights. It is the good time of the year for the Hindu people.

I enjoy Tihar a lot. I get excited by all the colorful and bright lights all over the city during the time of Tihar. Tihar is celebrated for five days. During Tihar, Goddess Laxmi, dogs, crows and cows are worshipped. It is an important festival that also helps to strengthen the relationship between brothers and sisters. On the last day of Tihar, girls put tika on their brothers and exchange love and blessings.

People gather themselves and play deusi and bhailo with different musical instruments at the time of Tihar.

Tihar is the festival of colorful lights. I believe this festival has the power to bring light into even the darkest hearts. It is the best time of the year for me as it helps me to get even close with my family and friends.

Mount Everest

Mount Everest is the world’s highest mountain.

It is located in the Mahalangur part of the Himalayas. Its peak is 8,848 metres above the sea level.

Its Nepali name is Sagarmatha. In Tibetan language, it is called Chomolungma. In 1865, it was given the English name Everest by the Royal Geographical Society. The name was recommended by Andrew Waugh, the British Surveyor General of India. The name Everest was named after Sir George Everest. He was Andrew Waugh’s predecessor. But at that time, it was mostly known as Peak XV.

In 1896, the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India established the first published height of Everest at 8,848 metres. The current official height of 8,848 metres was established by an Indian survey in 1955. It was subsequently confirmed by a Chinese survey in 1975.

Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary were the first people to climb to the top of Mount Everest in 1953. Many attempts were made to climb Everest before 1953 but those were not successful.

My Father’s Job

When my father was young, he wanted to be a soldier like my grandfather. When he passed his school, he changed his mind. Finally, he decided to be a dentist because dentists get more money.

To be a dentist, he had to work hard. He had to study in the university for five years and face a lot of exams.

In his job these days, he has to fix people’s teeth and sometimes he has to pull them out! He has to get up early and work hard. He goes to office at 7 am and works till late in the evening. However, he does not have to go to office on Saturdays.

He likes his job because he never has to take his work home and he meets lots of people. One thing he doesn’t like is that he can’t talk to his patients because he has to work inside their mouths!

My Room

My room is the first place I come to after school. It is on the first floor of my house. You can see my room right from the staircase. It is the first room on the left.

The door is painted pink, and a toy fairy welcomes you from a hook on the door.

Once I open the door, I see my favourite cartoon character Doraemon winking at me. Yes, I have a poster of Doraemon on the wall facing the door. It reads, “Let’s do some homework!” I think you can guess by now where my desk is. It is facing Doraemon. Besides my schoolbooks, there are also several storybooks on my desk.

Like most rooms, my room is also rectangular in shape. Its walls are sky blue in colour and decorated with butterflies, ladybirds and dragonflies. They are made of paper, not real!

My bed is by the window because I like to look at the stars while falling asleep.

I spend most of my after-school hours in my room.

TheMosquito

The mosquito belongs to the insect family. It has one pair of narrow wings and three pairs of slender legs. The body of a mosquito is divided into three parts – the head, the thorax and the abdomen. It also has two long antennae.

Both male and female mosquitoes feed on the nectar of flowers and plant juices. This gives them energy for flight. A few species are harmless but the female mosquitoes of some species feed on the blood of cattle and humans.

Many species of mosquitoes spread some of the world’s most harmful diseases like malaria and yellow fever. We need to protect ourselves against them.

MyFriend

We all need friends – someone to play with, someone to talk to and someone to share our secrets. But such friends are hard to find. I am lucky though because I have found a friend who is very close to me. Rashi is my real friend. She is my age and studies in my class. She is tall, fair and pretty.

Rashi is an ideal and hard-working student. She listens to the teachers attentively. Her grades are always good. She helps me when I find the lessons difficult. She is well-mannered and liked by both students and teachers alike.

Rashi is always ready to help me whenever I am sad or in any problem. She knows my every mood and is always quick to cheer me up. She never loses her patience with me even though I am quite difficult at times. I have never seen her angry or moody.

Sometimes, when I don’t feel like talking, she sits quietly besides me and waits till I speak. She knows that if she asks me anything during those moments, I may not respond or I may get more upset.

Her presence helps to make me happy.

In the evenings we always play together. We visit each other’s houses, too. My parents like her very much. She has become almost like a member of my family. We discuss all our family matters in front of her, too. Her parents treat me the same way.

I consider Rashi to be my true friend because she knows me best.

TheLion

The lion is a wild animal. It is called the King of Beasts.

It is shorter in length but it is about the same height as the tiger. It has a large head and glowing eyes. The lion has sharp teeth and powerful claws. Its body is covered with smooth hair. The male lion has a flowing mane on its neck.

The lion lives in the forests of Africa. It can also be found in the forests of Gujarat which is in India.

The lion lives on flesh but it does not eat the flesh of dead animals.

It is a brave, strong and fearsome animal. But it only kills when it is hungry.

The lion is rightly called the King of Beasts. We should not kill this wonderful creature. We should instead protect this species as their numbers are slowly dying out.

ATown

A town is a busy place for many people to live and work. Traffic moves up and down the main street. Bicycles, motorbikes and rickshaws use the side lanes to avoid the bigger vehicles. Buses and cars take children and people to schools and places of work.

Traffic lights are at every crossroad. They give signals to stop or to go.

We have to be careful when we cross the busy roads.

Most towns have shopping centres, malls and smaller market places.

People can buy whatever they need from these places. Shopping at a mall is more convenient as one can get everything like food, groceries, toiletries, utensils, jewellery, clothes, shoes and many more things under one roof.

People who live in towns enjoy many advantages over people who live in villages. There are good schools and colleges to choose from where children can get good education. When people get ill, they can go to hospitals where there are good, qualified doctors.

People can find jobs quite easily and if you are qualified, you can earn a good salary. There are many places for entertainment, too. Movie theatres, fun parks, clubs, gaming zones and bowling alleys are some of the places where people can go to relax and have fun.

Life in a town is very comfortable. But nowadays, towns are getting congested and unhealthy. Problems are growing and life is getting more difficult for people. It is the duty of each citizen to do what they can to make life easier, healthier and happier as we have everything to our advantage when compared to life in a village.

Rainforests

Rainforests are forests characterized by high rainfall. They receive the annual rainfall between 250 and 450 centimetres. There are two types of rainforest: tropical and temperate.

Around 40% - 70% of plant and animal species are found in rainforests. It has been estimated that there may be millions of species of plants, insects and microorganisms still undiscovered in tropical rainforests.

Tropical rainforests are called the “jewels of the Earth” and the “world’s largest pharmacies”, because over one quarter of natural medicines have been discovered there.

Rainforests are also responsible for 28% of the world’s oxygen turnover.

They process oxygen through photosynthesis from carbon dioxide and release oxygen through respiration.

Indeed, rainforests are our tropical treasures.

An Amazing Person In My Life

I have met quite a few people in my life who have impressed me. I look up to them and admire them. But the person whom I admire most is my mother. She is an amazing person and I love her dearly.

I know she loves me very much and she is always eager to help me in all that I do. I sometimes get angry and impatient with her but she never gets cross with me. With patience she makes me see where I am wrong.

She does all the work at home and I wonder where she gets all her energy. She keeps our home clean, cooks delicious food for us and does all the washing.

My mum often takes me shopping with her and those are some of my best moments. On these occasions, we always stop for lunch and an ice-cream and I always return home with a gift from her. She drops me to school every morning and helps me with my studies in the evenings.

She used to work as a teacher many years ago so she is a great help to me when I find it difficult to complete an assignment.

As old as I am, she never fails to tell me a story every night when I am tucked up in bed. She has done this from the time when I was very small.

Her only worries are about my health, comfort and happiness. She does everything to make me feel comfortable. She takes care to see that I grow up to be her pride and joy. Her strength, courage and dedication to our family makes her a truly amazing person.

Cricket

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game. It is played between two teams of 11 players each. The field is oval in shape. It has a rectangular 20-metre long pitch at the centre. Each team takes turn to bat, while the other team fields. Each turn is known as an innings.

A batsman hits the ball delivered by a bowler to make runs. The runs can be scored by hitting sixes, fours and by running to the other end of the pitch. A batsman scores a six when he hits a ball, and it goes over the field without a single bounce on the field. A batsman scores a four when he hits a ball, and the ball crosses the field bouncing on it. A batsman continues batting until he is out.

An innings comes to an end in one of the following ways. First, if the batting team loses 10 batsmen. Second, if a specified number of overs are completed.

In an over, a bowler delivers six balls to batsmen. Once an innings is over, the teams switch roles, and the fielding team comes in to bat.

The most popular types of cricket games are one-day and test matches. One day match, as the name suggests, comes to an end in a day. It has only two innings one for each team to bat in. On the other hand, test matches go on for several innings and can last up to a maximum of five days.

VillageLife

Life in a village is slower and more peaceful than life in a town. There are wide, open spaces and a lot of greenery. The air is fresh and pure and makes a person feel more active, both physically and mentally.

Houses are built far apart and people own plots of land where they grow vegetables which they eat or sell. Flowers grow everywhere in open fields, in gardens and between clumps of trees.

Cattle like buffaloes, cows, pigs and goats graze in the fields. Cocks and hens stay closer to the huts and homes of people. Ducks can be seen swimming lazily in ponds.

The village children run about barefooted, playing in the shade of trees after the school is over. The elders go about their daily work. Women can be seen filling water at the wells or washing their clothes at the pond.

Old people sit around chatting with each other.

The village market is always colourful and crowded. It is a noisy place where vendors and shopkeepers display their goods and try to attract customers. It is usually a good place where things can be bought at cheaper rates than in a town. People, who grow and sell their own vegetables and grain, proudly display their wares.

Birds can be seen in trees or besides hedges and their calls and whistles are like music to the ears. The calm and peace of the countryside attracts people who look to get away from the busy city life.

Though people in villages are not as rich as those living in towns and cities, they work hard and are happy with their lives.

Gai Jatra

Gai Jatra is a well-known festival in Nepal. It is celebrated in the month of August. It is usually the Newari people in the Kathmandu valley who celebrate this festival. The government has declared a holiday in the Kathmandu Valley on this day.

Gai Jatra started from the time of King Pratap Malla. When the king’s son died, the queen was very sad. She stopped laughing. The king then ordered his people to take out a parade from each house where a person had died that year. He also asked them to make the parade funny in order to make the queen laugh.

So the people from every house, where someone had died, brought out a cow or a child dressed like a cow. The queen then realized that many people had also lost their dear ones. The children looked so funny dressed up like cows that she started to laugh. This made the king very happy. From that day onwards, Gai Jatra is celebrated every year.

A special stick dance called “Ghintang Ghising” is also performed on this day. It is celebrated outdoors, just like a street festival.

MyFavouriteAuthor

I enjoy reading so I like many books that are written by different authors. But I have a favourite author and he is Charles Dickens. He is a great novelist.

His books are stories about life in the English society in his days. Oliver Twist and David Copperfield are brought to life in his books. Their experiences, both happy and sad, are so real. Both Oliver Twist and David Copperfield suffer a lot. But in the end, good fortune smiles on them. It is believed that David Copperfield is the story of Charles Dicken’s own life.

He was very poor in his young days and saw a lot of cruelty towards people in his society. He wanted to change all that and make his society a happy and healthy one where children could enjoy their childhood.

I like Dickens because he cared about the welfare of children. His love and sympathy for the poor and homeless make me admire him as one of the greatest men and authors that ever lived.

My Favourite Subject

My favourite subject is English. I have always had an interest in becoming better at English. As English is the universal language, I wanted to be good at it. English is not just a subject, it is a different language. So it is very interesting to me.

English is a vast language. I think no one can be perfect at English because it is constantly evolving. I like English because it allows me to express myself in a language other than my mother tongue, Nepali. It has increased my confidence level as well. English also helps me in all other subjects. I can understand and write proper answers due to which all my marks have been improving.

In this competitive world of today, having good command over English is a big advantage. English is useful in every profession and in every place. Besides that, I always score the highest in English so it is my favourite subject.

Rainy Days

I feel very happy when it rains. I like watching the raindrops and listening to their pattering on the window-panes and tin rooftops.

Rainy days bring relief in hot summer days. When it rains heavily in the mornings, we do not have to go to school. The rain water gathers in pools on the streets and everywhere. Heavy rains cause water-logging and vehicles find it hard to move in the flooded streets. People have to wade through water to get to places.

Dark clouds move across the sky and hide the sun. Rumbling thunder and streaks of lightning keep people indoors. But, when it drizzles, children can be seen playing in the rain. They make paper boats and float them in the puddles. I am not allowed to play in the rain, but when no one is watching, I sneak out of my house and enjoy playing and getting wet with my friends.

Farmers look forward to the rains as rice planting is done during this time. But not everyone likes the rainy days because heavy showers destroy fields of vegetables and make them rot. It is quite difficult getting fresh, unspoiled vegetables during the rainy season.

But no matter what, rainy days are always welcome for different reasons. Everywhere the grass is greener, the leaves shine after being washed by the downpour and the air always smells cleaner and fresher.

Yes, rainy days are much better than the hot summer days.

Doing Homework

I study in a boarding school in Biratnagar. I started my schooling here in nursery, when I was three years old and in Nursery. I am now in class five.

My school is a wonderful place to study because of so many things. We are taught good manners and how to be kind to others around us. Studies, too, are fun and the thing I like the most is that our teachers give us very little homework.

My teacher believes that most of our writing should be done in class. This way, she can be sure that our parents are not doing our homework for us. We just get a page each of homework from two subjects per day. It is easy for us because it is just a revision of what we did in class.

I have plenty of time to play and relax when I get home from school.

My homework does not take much time, so I do it happily.

I know homework is good but then there should be a limit to how much a student gets. Homework should just be a revision of the day’s lessons. They should not just fill up our exercise copies to make our teachers and parents happy. All teachers should realize that it is also important for children to have time to enjoy their childhood. Going to school then would be so much more fun.

Hunters kill these animals for their tusks which are then sold in the market to make costly ornaments. Hunting and killing elephants are punishable by law.

An elephant lives in a herd that is made up of young elephants, males and females. It is usually a female who leads the herd. Elephants are very protective of their young and will even kill to keep them out of danger.

An elephant is an intelligent animal. It is useful for its great strength.

Men use this animal to move heavy loads and pile logs. Many years ago, elephants were used to carry soldiers to war. Many of them died on the battlefields. In some countries they are used in processions and made to perform in circuses.

An elephant is basically a gentle animal but you do get a few that are destructive. Sometimes an elephant goes mad and then it is really dangerous. It can destroy anything in its path and even kill people. But this is very rare.

This animal should not be ill-treated or killed. It should be protected by all.

MyFavouriteMovie

My Favourite movie of all time is Dennis the Menace. It is a comedy set in a quiet American neighbourhood. Mason Gable plays the lead role as Dennis, the 8-year-old mischief-maker who manages to catch a thief.

Walter Matthau is Mr. Wilson, the man who lives next door to Dennis. A thief steals gold coins from Mr. Wilson and, as he’s running away, he spots Dennis hiding in Mr. Wilson’s garden. Dennis is snatched by the thief and their adventure begins.

Dennis is not the least bit frightened and drives the thief mad with his constant talking. Soon he discovers that the thief has Mr. Wilson’s gold. The film reaches a humorous climax when Dennis ties the thief up and hands him over to the police. Mr. Wilson then sees Dennis in a different light.

The cast is excellent, and young Mason Gable surely has a bright acting career ahead of him. The film is full of hilarious scenes as it successfully portrays children’s natural curiosity in a comical way.

Dennis the Menace is a film well worth seeing. Children of all ages, as well as adults, will love this charming story. It is a highly entertaining film which was one of the biggest hits of 1993.

Computers

The way we communicate now is rapidly changing because of the widespread use of computers. It is now possible to communicate very rapidly and we can look forward to a time when everybody on the planet can communicate with everybody else because of the even more widespread use of computers.

The traditional way of communicating, writing letters by hand, was much more personal because the writer had time to refine and think out the contents of the letter before sending it and many people still prefer this method even though it is a lot slower.

Furthermore, computers are extremely useful in education. Classrooms which give students access to computers are increasingly common and there is little doubt that this will benefit young learners.

Computer technology is also widely used in industry. We should not forget that many of the appliances and vehicles that we have today are assembled by robots which, in turn, are controlled by computers. As this technology progresses, we are likely to see major new developments.

All in all, I think that computer technology has revolutionized the way people communicate. Progress in this area is very rapid. I believe that we will see even more developments in the future.

WildAnimals

Wild animals are the animals that are not domesticated and usually live in their natural habitat. Wild animals are not only found in forests but also deserts, grasslands and other ecosystems. The animals that we can see in zoos like tigers, snakes and deer are also wild animals.

When we hear the word “wild”, we automatically think “dangerous”. But the fact is, animals do not attack deliberately. They either attack for food or when they feel threatened or disturbed. Just because animals feed on other animals, they are called wild. But it is necessary for maintaining the balance in nature. For example, if tigers and lions stop feeding on deer and other animals, their number will grow uncontrollably.

Human beings have destroyed forests and used up lands for their own selfish use. This has left many wild animals homeless. More and more of them are becoming extinct every day. If this continues, the future generation will not be able to see any wild animals. Just like dinosaurs, many wild animals will become history.

The solution to this is that humans, domestic animals and wild animals should all co-exist. Humans should let the wild animals live in their habitat and stop deforestation.

My Favourite Season

Season is the change in weather. There are mainly four seasons. They are summer, spring, winter and autumn. Winter starts from December and lasts till February. Spring starts from March and lasts till May. After that, summer starts and lasts till August. Finally autumn starts in September and lasts till November. Among the four, spring is my favourite season.

Spring is the duration between winter and summer. The days gradually become longer and nights shorter. The weather also becomes warmer. One of the main reasons why I like spring is that I do not need to wear heavy winter clothes. I can also have ice-creams and play out with my friends for longer.

Another reason is, the flowers start blooming and barren trees get covered with new leaves. Parks are filled with people who enjoy the greenery and children play happily. My garden gets filled with beautiful flowers again.

How Plants Help Us

Plants are one of the major living components of the planet earth. They are usually green in colour. Plants are broadly classified into three types. They are herbs, shrubs and trees. Plants are autotrophic which means they produce their food themselves. But humans are highly dependent on plants for food as well as other aspects.

To start with, plants absorb the carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen. Oxygen is essential for us to breathe and stay alive. Besides that, plants such as wheat plants, rice plants, spinach and potatoes are the major portion of our meal. There are also some herbs that are used for medicinal purposes.

Furthermore, plants provide us with materials such as papers, rubber, jute and cotton which are essential parts of our daily life. The wood obtained from trees is used to build furniture, doors and windows. Apart from that, plants are home for many birds and animals. The plants along with the birds and animals living in them are important in maintaining balance of the eco-system.

Humans are directly and indirectly dependent on plants for basically everything. Plants maintain the temperature of the planet as well as regulate rainfall. But deforestation is increasing day by day and this will ultimately hamper us. So we should stop deforestation and start conserving the plants.

Batman is a superhero that was created by DC comics and is inspired by the behavior and looks of cave bats. Impact OfTelevision On Children

Television is a part of our daily life. Nowadays every family owns a TV set. We can find more than 100 different channels on TV such as news channels, music channels, health and fitness related channels and informative channels. But all the channels are not appropriate for children.

The channels such as National Geographic and Discovery can be a very good source of knowledge. Children can learn new things about different animals, the environment and our planet. News channels keep them updated about what is going on in the country and the world.

However, there are many channels which are not appropriate for children. Even some of the advertisements come under that category. Violent scenes as well as scenes displaying cigarette and alcohol consumption can affect the children in a negative way.

Lastly, television is a very good source of knowledge and information. But children should watch television under the supervision of elders. Only then the television will have a positive impact on their development.

A friend is someone who supports us and wishes us well. Friends play a very important role in a person’s life. Friends listen to our problems and give advice when needed. They encourage us and have fun with us.

Relationships such as parents, brothers and sisters are formed at birth but friendship is a relation that we form ourselves. We cannot choose our family but we can choose our friends Sometimes we cannot share everything with our parents but we can share it with friends. Not only secrets, we also share homeworks, toys and even our tiffin with our friends.

At the same time we should be careful while selecting our friends because friends can influence us very much. If we have friends who have bad habits, they may influence or force us to follow those habits. Some may be selfish who just use our friendship to gain something. Good friends are very difficult to find.A true friend can help us in making correct decisions and stay with us in bad times. Good friends make us better.

Heavy traffic and pollution are among the most serious problems modern cities face nowadays. Our city Kathmandu is also facing these problems. We can play a vital role in decreasing these problems.

First of all, it would be a good idea to use public transport more for going to offices and schools. This will help to reduce the traffic jam. Apart from that, the air pollution caused due to the smoke coming from vehicles is also reduced.

Secondly, we should not throw away our wastes in natural resources such as river or in our surrounding. It will pollute the natural resource and also spread many diseases. We should separate our wastes and give it to the waste collectors so that they can dispose it properly. We should do what we can to make our city a cleaner and healthier place to live.

There are other things we can do. We should never throw away waste on roads. We should wait till we find a dustbin and throw it in the dustbin. We all should think about our environment and make our city a better place to live.

How I Help Out At Home

I live with my parents and my little sister. We do not have a servant in the house. I am the eldest child so I try to help both my mother and father as much as I can. My father is a clerk and my mother is a housewife.

My mother wakes me up at 7 am. After that, I get ready for school and go to the kitchen. I have my breakfast and then wash my plate if I am not getting late. I come back from school at 4 pm. My mother gives me something to eat and I do my home works after finishing it.

In the evening I help my father to water the plants in our garden. I also help my mother to pick vegetable for our dinner from the kitchen garden. Although I don’t know cooking, I stir the curry when my mother is busy with doing other things.

We have our dinner at around 8 pm. After dinner, I wash my plate and also feed our pets. I do not know how to do most of the household work like cooking or cutting vegetables. But I help both my parents by doing the things that I can.

Swimming Pools And Lakes

Swimming pools and lakes are different in many ways.

Swimming pools may be 10 or 15 feet deep but lakes are much, much deeper. For example, Rara Lake is 548 feet in depth. All pools are man-made, while lakes can be either natural or manmade. Pools are constructed either indoors or outdoors, while lakes are always found outdoors. Lakes also have more uses than pools. For example, many people use lakes for fishing and boating. Pools, on the other hand, are mostly used for swimming. Lastly, lakes usually have aquatic plants and animals living in them but these are not found in pools.

There are also, however, several ways in which pools and lakes are alike. Pools and lakes are both used for swimming. Both come in many shapes and sizes, and both are filled with water. And, of course, they are both places to have fun in summer!

Importance OfExams

An exam is a test to find out how much students have learnt. Most of the students are afraid of exams. But exams are necessary to evaluate the progress of a student. Exams are a vital part of the school curriculum.

First of all, exams act as a motivation for students. Students concentrate on their studies more and more as the exams approach because they want to score good marks. Furthermore, exams make sure that students study all the subjects and not just the subjects they like. This means the students will gain knowledge in all the subjects.

Moreover, if there were no exams, the students could get lazy and avoid studying. But because they don’t want to fail, they study. Besides this, exams teach valuable lessons such as punctuality and time management. Exams also develop a sense of competition among the students and encourage them to do better.

In conclusion, exams help students reach their full potential. Exams are opportunities to improve. They help in analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of a student so that they know which subjects they need to work hard on. Overall exams are very important part of academics.

FriendsAre Important

Everyone likes being in the company of friends. No one likes to be alone.

I cannot imagine a world without friends. We have friends in all stages of our lives. Sometimes friends we make in childhood remain our friends in our later years, too.

Friends are the ones who make us laugh when we feel down. They always seem to cheer us up by comforting us with kind, thoughtful words or by just holding our hands in silence.

They are there to share our secrets, no matter how big or small. You can be assured that they will honor that secret of yours and not tell anyone else.

We are sometimes closer to our friends than our parents because of the age factor. It is nice to have someone who thinks like you and understands you as a result of it. Parents have different views and opinions and at times, do not understand us at all. But it is not the case with a friend.

When we are young, our friends are there to share jokes and laugh with us, cry with us, play with us and keep us from getting bored. And, as we grow older, our friendships become stronger. Friends become our confidants and advisors.

There is a saying that “A friend is need is a friend indeed” and that is very true. There are many people who we call friends, but a person can know a true friend’s worth in difficult times. The one, who stands by your side when you have nothing, is a true friend indeed. There are others who stay with you only in good times. You should avoid those friends.

But no matter what, we all need someone. That is why I believe that friends are important.

How To Plan A Great Picnic

In order to have a great picnic, just follow these simple steps. First is the selection of a perfect spot. Discuss with the members of your group before you choose a spot. It is important that all members like the place where the picnic will be held.

Second is the food. Make sure that everyone will like the food on the menu. You should not cook only non-vegetarian food items. You should have both nonvegetarian and vegetarian items on the menu. This way everyone will get to eat something.

Third, involve everyone in the recreational activities. This will help everyone have lots of fun on the picnic and no one will feel left out.

Fourth, serve the food before everyone gets too hungry. Otherwise, you will see some of your best dishes disappearing into thin air!

Finally, make sure everyone helps in cleaning up. Leaving the picnic spot clean for other picnic-goers is good manners. Follow these basic rules, and enjoy your picnic!

WhyMyMomAndDadAreTheGreatest

My name is Anisha. I live with my parents in Damak.

My father is a businessman. He owns a stationery shop and supplies stationery items to schools. He is very hard-working and leaves the house at six every morning to get supplies for his shop. He spends the whole day in his shop. He is careful about how he spends the money that he earns. He is a kind man and always helps those who are in trouble.

My father is always there to give me advice. He has taught me that wealth alone does not bring happiness. Instead, hard work and honesty is what is important. He always makes sure to spend time with me, playing, helping me with my homework or just talking.

My mother is a housewife. She enjoys staying at home cooking and cleaning for us. She wakes up at five every morning and starts her work after doing her puja. She is a soft-spoken and gentle person but can also be very strict.

She is a good listener and very patient. My mother has many friends and whenever we go out shopping, people come up to us just to talk to her. She is the opposite of my dad. While he is quiet, she is very talkative.

My mom and dad are the kindest, most loving people. I know for a fact that they are the greatest parents in the world.

Deforestation

Deforestation is the cutting down of trees as opposed to afforestation which is the planting of trees.

The need for more homes for a growing population is resulting in the cutting down of more trees. People should only cut down what they need and not destroy total forests. So many trees are being cut down nowadays and wild animals are slowly losing their homes and are straying closer to human settlements. There have been many cases where humans have been killed and eaten by tigers that have strayed into villages.

Firewood is also much in demand especially in remote areas. People in such places do not have gas or kerosene or even coal. It is so much more convenient to cut down trees and use the wood for a #re. But people should realize that the destruction of our forests can cause many problems.

The rise in carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere is dangerous for our health. Trees help in keeping these levels down by releasing oxygen. The roots of trees help to hold the soil together, thus preventing soil erosion and landslides. Trees provide shade to travellers. They add beauty to our surroundings. It is so much nicer living in an area where there is more greenery than concrete structures.

But people do not look at these points. They argue that they need wood to build homes, for firewood and furniture for their houses. As the world’s population is growing, there is a need for more houses.

While taking all these points into consideration, we can clearly see the disadvantages of deforestation are more than the advantages. We should realize this and work together to save our trees and make our planet a greener and healthier one to live on.

Exams Are Important

Students have different opinions about this topic. Some say that they are good and some say just the opposite. But I think exams are good.

Our school days are important days in our lives. It is the time when we learn so many things ñ not just from books, but also lessons from our teachers that will help us later on in our lives. It is at school that we learn that hard work leads to success.

I believe that exams are important for many reasons. Firstly, when we are graded during exams, we get to know whether we have worked hard enough or need to work harder in order to improve.

Secondly, knowing that we have to sit for exams help us to become responsible, we realize that we have to put in a certain amount of time studying every day.

If there were no exams, students would not take things seriously. It would be just going to school, learning what you are taught there, and then coming home and putting all that out of your mind. But when you know that you have an exam to study for, you put aside time to study and understand what you have been taught.

As a student, we hate the thought of exams, but we should realize that they are important. This is a small test in our lives that will one day help us get through a bigger test ñ you have to work hard to succeed.

A Book I Read Recently

Little Master by Uday Sharma is one of the most wonderful books I have ever read. It is a story of an ordinary boy. This book helps us discover our own greatness.

The story begins with the introduction of a little boy whose hobby is to collect various rocks: white rocks, black rocks, speckled rocks and many more. One day, a traveller saw him and asked, “Do you want to be a geologist?” The boy wanted to be a geologist and planned to go to school.

Soon after his admission, he found out a bitter truth.

In schools of those days, nobody was interested in learning. All were after good grades. Students had to learn but nobody showed them how to learn. This soon got to the little boy and he forgot his love for rocks. Then one day, the results came. The boy got his folder. After looking at the result, he was broken. That day he did not go back home. He went to a river bank.

While sitting on a big stone at the river bank, he met a magical boy. This boy led him to see different places and people. This adventure made the boy realize his own greatness. We can also find our greatness hidden within us by reading this book.

I suggest that young people read this book as they can discover their own greatness after reading. This book is also for adults. It helps them understand their children. So this book is a must read for everyone.

Stage Fright – No More

A lot of people suffer from stage fright. Do you remember the last time you were on stage? Your legs were shaking, your body and hands were numb, and worst of all, your throat dried out.

You are not alone; even professional actors and performers have it. Then, how do they perform confidently? Here are two ways to overcome your stage fright: One of the ways is to push yourself beyond your fear. In simple words, take up the challenge. Prepare yourself for a stage performance, and do it. As you perform, the stage fright will slowly give up, and you will perform more naturally.

The second way to overcome stage fright is to convince yourself logically that the dialogue of your negative mind is incorrect and, in fact, self-sabotaging.

Take a moment to write down your own negative mind’s reservations about appearing on stage. Then, write down the corresponding positive mind’s responses that empower you.

Use the pronoun you for the scripts of your negative mind, and the pronoun I and me in your positive mind’s responses. This will help you disassociate from your negative mind and associate more closely with your positive mind.

For example, if your negative mind tells you, “The audience won’t hear you,” Your positive mind should answer back, “If the audience doesn’t hear me for the first time, I’ll smile and politely repeat myself more loudly, slowly and clearly.” With these techniques in your hands, you will be performing like professional actors and actresses in no time.

Avoiding Road Accidents

Every day many people are involved in road accidents. Some are killed and many more are injured or maimed. So it is important for us to learn to use the roads properly and safely.

As the roads are very busy nowadays, we should be very careful when crossing one. It is safer to use a zebra crossing or an overhead bridge whenever one is available. If there are no crossings, then we must look carefully right and left and cross only when it is safe to do so.

Some of us take the bus to school. It is important that we do not try to get on or off a bus while it is still moving. I tried to get on a moving bus once. It dragged me a short distance and nearly ran over me. I was lucky to escape with only some scratches on my legs.

Using a bicycle can be dangerous too. We must pay attention on the road and never cycle in the middle of a busy road. We must obey all traffic rules. Also we must make sure our bicycles are in good condition with working brakes, lights etc.

These are some things we can do to avoid accidents. However, there is no guarantee that we will never be involved in one. The important thing is to stay alert at all times while using the roads. We must know what ishappening around us. In that way we can take necessary action to avoid danger.

Is Home Really Safe?

Our home is usually our favorite place to spend time in. However many accidents occur at home. There are dangerous things in the house and we should be aware of them. Thus we can avoid unnecessary pain or injury.

Electricity runs many of our home appliances. It is a very useful thing but also very dangerous. Electrical sockets and power points should be handled with care. Young children should never be allowed to go near them. Repairs should only be done by a competent electrician. Old or faulty appliances should be discarded. If used, they are likely to start a fire somewhere or kill someone who touches it.

The kitchen also has many dangerous things. Sharp knives, gas cylinders, hot water and stoves can result in an accident if not handled properly. Thus the kitchen is not a place to be careless in.

The biggest danger in a bathroom is when the floor is slippery with water or soap. I have heard of many incidents of people, especially elderly and kids, falling in the bathroom. Sometimes the fall is fatal.

Finally the medicine cabinet should be out of reach of young children. Dangerous drugs and pills can look like sweets to the kids. If taken, the consequences can be disastrous.

All in all, our homes are not free of danger at all. It is up to us to watch out for the dangers and keep ourselves safe.

Importance OfExercise

Our body is made of muscles, blood, bones and various other living tissues. When any of these are injured or not working properly, we get ill. Nobody likes to be ill. So it is important that we keep our body healthy.

Exercising is one of the best ways to keep it healthy. If we do not exercise, then our muscles become weaker and we are less able to do things properly. Also the bones can become weaker and thus break easily.

There are many types of exercises that we may participate in. We may play badminton, football or whatever games that we prefer. We may also jog, walk or swim. Even the older group of people can go for yoga or a stroll in the park. For the really fit young people, there are rock-climbing, gymnastics and other physically demanding activities.

We exercise to keep the body healthy. However, there are some who overdo things and end up injuring themselves. It is fine to jog for a few kilometres. It is madness to jog until we are exhausted. Also they are people who become addicted to their exercises. They become unhappy when they are unable to exercise or when they lose to someone in a competition.

Exercise also increases a person’s appetite and helps in gaining sound sleep.

To sum up, exercise has a lot of benefits. But at the same time, we should not do it excessively. A habit of regular and proper exercise will result in a healthy body as well as mind.

TheRoleOfMarriageInToday’sSociety

If there is one thing that virtually all the world’s various cultures have in common, it is marriage. Beliefs, diet and languages vary greatly, but the desire people have to share their lives with another seems universal.

Psychologists have said that people have a deep need for the emotional security which marriage provides. Knowing that one has a partner in life makes it easier to cope with the problems of daily life.

On the other hand, the fact that many single people are content to live alone suggests that the “emotional need” theory is incomplete. British novelist Fay Weldon once stated, “Marriage has nothing to do with emotion and everything to do with property.”

According to the supporters of this view, people marry in order to increase their wealth, either by marrying a rich partner or because, as the saying goes, “two can live as cheaply as one.” It is true that financial considerations are often the primary reason that people marry. Yet there are countless examples of people marrying for love, regardless of their partner’s lack of money.

All in all, marriage continues to be extremely popular in many societies. Most of us have a need for love and support and want to have children at some point in our lives. Fully understanding the reasons why people marry, though, may be as difficult as understanding the human mind itself.

Telephone:TheMost UsefulInvention

Throughout the 20st century, technology evolved the most and provided us with a huge variety of new developments. In my opinion, one of the greatest gifts technology has given us is the telephone.

Firstly, phones have improved our relationships by helping us and family and it helps me stay in contact with those who live in different parts of the country and abroad. Sometimes you just don’t have the energy to write a letter and it takes so long to get there phoning is much more convenient and personal.

What’s more, mobile phones are very useful in serious situations. For example, an accident, if your car breaks down in the middle of nowhere or if you get stuck in a lift. I find mine most useful when I’m meeting a friend and one of us is going to be late or has got lost.

All in all, I think the telephone is one of the best inventions. It exists to make our lives easier and bring people closer together, and that can only be a good thing!

TheSun: UltimateRenewable Source OfEnergy

Most of the energy consumed by our industrial world comes from fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. These substances not only pollute the environment heavily, but also will not last forever. What is the solution? It is right there in front of us: the renewable energy of the sun.

When the sun heats up the air, it rises and cooler air rushes in to take its place. The sun’s energy has been converted to wind energy! It can now turn windmills that, in turn, can produce electrical energy.

The sun also warms water, which rises and evaporates. Then it falls as rain or snow, which, in turn, fills rivers. We can now use this water to run generators to produce electricity.

Many houses also have solar panels that collect solar energy. It can warm our rooms in winter and heat the water supply. Special cells collect the sun’s energy and change it into electricity.

The more we start using the sun’s renewable energy, the less we will depend on other fuels, and the cleaner our atmosphere will be.

We entered the gate and the first thing ahead was a beautiful fountain. Right beside it, there was a map of the whole zoo. I didn’t understand the map but my father did. We turned right and saw a big cage full of strange big monkeys. My dad told me they are called chimpanzees. We passed though many enclosures containing different types of animals such as hyenas, giant deer, peacocks, bears, lions, tigers, rhinos, snakes and beautiful birds.

After that, we went for an elephant ride. We enjoyed the ride a lot. I felt happy after the trip to zoo but I was sad to see the animals locked up in cages.

A Special Birthday

It was last year in January. My birthday was the next day and I was having dinner with my family. I was waiting for my mother to discuss plans about my birthday tomorrow. We finished dinner but no one talked about my birthday.

I went to school and none of my friends wished me. I reached home and went straight to my room. I was taking a shower and I heard noises in the living room. I finished bathing and went into the living room. The room was decorated beautifully and all my family and friends were there. They all wished me happy birthday at once. I cut the cake and got so many gifts. I thought it would be my worst birthday. But it was the most special birthday ever.

FirstDay At A New School

I will always remember my first day at school. When I woke up, it was a bright and sunny morning. I was thrilled to be going to a new big school. I had heard a lot of great things about the school. I quickly got ready, had breakfast and then went for school.

When I arrived, I found that the school building was really huge. I didn’t know where my classroom was. There were a lot of other students in the school compound. Suddenly, I saw someone I thought looked like a girl from my old school, Sarita. I had never really spoken to her before but I was happy to see a familiar face.

I called her name and she came towards me with a smile on her face. She seemed happy to see me too. She is two years senior to me so we wouldn’t be in the same class. Nevertheless I was not as nervous about the new school after meeting her there. We helped each other in finding our classrooms and also had lunch together.

The school turned out to be as good as I had hoped, and my English improved enormously. I also made some new friends. I was really scared about the first day in a new school. But it was a very nice experience.

A Funny Time In My Family

It was four years ago. My little brother had just turned one year old. He was playing with me and our pet dog kittu. We were having a lot of fun.

Our elder sister entered the room. She wanted me to help her in the kitchen. I told her I had to watch over our little brother. She was about to leave when we noticed that our brother was trying to imitate Kittu. He was crawling side by side and even trying to lick his feet. Then suddenly Kittu barked and we thought it scared the little boy. But to our amusement, he tried to make a barking sound.

Both my sister and I burst into laughter. It was the cutest thing ever. We called everyone and made them watch his activities. He was so happy to get the attention and continued trying to become Kittu.

A Picnic To Remember

I think picnics are fun. Everyone likes spending time enjoying the outdoors. I have been for many picnics with my family and friends. The best picnic that I have been for so far is the one that my school took us for last month. We went to Sundarijal. My friends and I took a lot of tasty snacks to have there.

The bus left our school at 8 am. How excited we were! We sang songs and made quite a noise in the bus. Our teachers could not keep us quiet.

At last our long journey was over and we got off the bus. Our fun had begun. We spent the next few hours climbing up steep slopes and jumping from one boulder to the other. We took off our shoes and socks and played in the water but made sure not to get our clothes wet. The water was ice-cold and we could not stop shivering. But that did not stop us from having a nice time.

We took a break from our playing at around 12:30 pm and sat down to eat all the tasty food that our mothers had packed for us. The selrotis and chicken roast were the tastiest and I had a good feed. Some of us had taken soft drinks and we shared them with all our friends.

After eating, our teachers made sure that we picked up all the scraps and packets. We put them into a big bag and threw it into a big garbage bin that we found. We played around some more and soon it was time to leave.

We got into the bus tired but happy. We reached school and told all our other friends from the other classes about the fun we had. It was the best picnic that I had been for.

An Unpleasant Dream

I dream almost every night. One dream, however, frightened me greatly. It was indeed a horrible one.

One day, after a delicious meal, I went out for a short walk. I was alone on a lonely road near a graveyard. I was thinking of my lessons when I suddenly heard a voice calling out to me.

I looked back and saw an old lady grinning at me. She had long dirty hair. Her face was covered with blood and her nails were very long. She was wearing a white sari. I just stared at her in fear.

I dared not move or try to run.

I saw her walking towards me. I was too frightened to move.

Her long hands then began to stretch out to catch me. I heard her laughing at the same time. It was a horrible sound and my body turned cold. Just before she could catch me, however, I made a desperate effort to run. But she was behind me and almost caught me. I screamed loudly in fear.

As I screamed, I woke up to find that I had only been dreaming. I was so happy to know that I was safe in my bed.

HowIMetMyBestFriend

My home is in Solukhumbu. I study as a boarder in Primrose Boarding School which is in Kathmandu.

When I first joined the hostel, I used to cry every day. Everything was new and seemed strange to me.

At first, I did not make any friends because I was very shy. There was this girl in my class who would sit next to me. Her name was Mingma Sherpa. She was born in Kathmandu and had lived and studied in Primrose Boarding School from the age of two.

This was home to her and she seemed very happy away from her parents.

Mingma did her best to make friends with me. It took a long time for me to talk to her. She was always there to help me with my studies. She protected me from the girls who tried to bully me for my snacks and pocket money. I felt safe with her around.

Mingma knew my every mood. She could tell when I was sad or happy, confused or upset. She would sit quietly beside me till I felt better. She knew me better than anyone else in the school.

The years that we studied together were the best. She left school because her mother was not keeping very good health. I hardly saw her after that but I will always remember her as a good friend.

She was the one who knew me best.

GettingReady For The Day

My name is Varun Shrestha and I live with my mother, father, three brothers and a baby sister. We are a happy family and get on well with each other. Our home is a happy one and I think we all live quite a peaceful life.

But when morning comes, we all change and become each other’s worst enemy. To get ready for school and work is a difficult task for us. Each of us has to bathe, dress, have breakfast and leave the house on time. It is almost impossible with each one getting in the other’s way.

My younger brothers get into fights every morning. My mom has a difficult time trying to stop them from injuring each other. My baby sister adds to the confusion by yelling and crying at the top of her lungs. She has a very loud voice even though she is so tiny.

My father tries to get out of everyone’s way by hiding behind the newspaper. He pretends not to hear my mother’s shouts for help.

The only time there is some peace and quiet is when we all sit down to have our breakfast. Then it is chaos all over again as each one rushes to pack books and tiffin for lunch at school.

I feel very relieved when I step out of my house. I find school really peaceful and relaxing after all the morning madness at home.

Last Summer

I will never forget what happened last summer. One morning during the holidays, my friends and I were out on a walk. That day, we decided to go inside a building on the bank of the river. Nobody used to live there.

We were seven altogether. We were strolling around the building. Then, we went in the building. In the rooms, we found broken windows, doors, and lots of spider webs.

After looking inside the building, we went to the roof.

Suddenly, we heard the sound of boots, possibly army boots, walking up to the roof.

We were very scared because we hadn’t found anyone in the building. The sound of footsteps grew louder and closer by the second. My heart was beating like a drum. We looked at each other, and each of us was sweating with fear. None of us had the guts to look in the direction the sound was coming from.

One of us suggested that since the building had only one storey, we could jump to the ground. So, we all jumped. We were lucky that we landed on soft mud and nobody got hurt. But I lost one of my flip-flops in the rush to run away.

Till this day, I don’t know whether it was a ghost or a person that had walked up to the roof. It is a secret I’ve never told my parents.

Morning Madness

Mornings at my home are very chaotic. My parents have to get to work and my brother and I have to get to school. It is a total madhouse.

Each one of us tries to get to the washroom first. We are like a herd of wild elephants stomping and charging around in each other’s way. I wonder what our neighbours think of all the noise every morning.

I set my alarm every night, but when it rings in the morning, I turn it off immediately. So, my brother manages to jump out of bed first. Then my father gets up and stands in line for the washroom.

I am always the last!

We never enjoy our breakfast. We are always in so much hurry that we don’t really know what we are eating. I wonder if the same thing happens in my friends’ homes.

On many occasions, my brother and I have rushed out of the house leaving some exercise books at home. So we often get punishment at school. This all happens due to the morning rush at home.

I wish we could be more organized like the other families!

My Birthday In The City

My parents decided to take me to the city to celebrate my 10th birthday. I was very excited. I wanted to visit the big shops in the city and buy a lot of things there. I also wanted to see a film at the cinema hall. In my village there aren’t any big shops and there is no cinema.

We watched the film Ice Age at Kumari Hall. The film was really good. During the break, my father bought ice creams and popcorn for my mother and me. I had a great time.

After the film, we went up to a place called game parlour. It was full of games of all kinds. My father and I played so many interesting games. The best game I played was bowling. My mother sat at the side of us and enjoyed herself even though she did not play anything.

Later, we went to a nice restaurant to have lunch. I was totally surprised when the waiter brought a big birthday cake with my name written on it. My parents looked at me and smiled. They had ordered the cake in advance. We all enjoyed the cake and other delicious food items there.

Then we spent the whole afternoon shopping in the big shops of the city. One of the biggest shops we visited was called Bishal Bazaar. My parents bought me two pairs of jeans, some t-shirts and a beautiful watch there. I was so happy with my gifts and thanked them over and over again.

I can never forget that day when I went to the city for the first time.

TheStart OfOur Journey

It was my winter break and I had a month’s holiday. My parents had planned to go to India for about two weeks. I was happy to get away from the cold and the long power cuts. We were to travel from Kathmandu to Birgunj by bus and then to Kolkata by train.

We went by taxi to the bus park at around 2 pm. It was a clear, cool day and we were well on time as our bus was to leave at five in the evening. The bus park was very crowded with all kinds of people. Some were rushing to board their buses while others were searching for porters to carry their luggage.

My father took us to a small but clean restaurant at the bus park and we had something to eat. After that, we stood around looking at everything. A bus park is not a very clean place as people throw litter everywhere. Little children were running about playing and vendors were calling out to people to buy their goods. The dust and flies really bothered me the most. And to make it worse, the fumes from the buses were terrible. I could not wait for our journey to begin.

At last it was time to leave and I sat back in my seat happily. I knew the journey ahead would be long but I would also enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way.

A City In Water

I woke up one morning to a very heavy downpour of rain. The thunder and lightning was scary and I ran to my mum’s side.

I looked out of my window and was shocked to see the sight. There was no road outside my house. It was so badly flooded that it looked like a river. The water poured down from the sky. It was a terrible thing to see. People were climbing to safety on the top of their cars as the level of the water on the roads rose higher and higher. There was darkness all around as the sun was hidden behind the rain clouds.

A strong breeze blew scraps of metal and paper everywhere. Street dogs could be seen swimming to safety.

People who were caught in the rain were wading in high waters and the level was almost up to their chests. The TV was flashing news of the sudden, unexpected downpour. Different parts of the city were partially submerged under water.

It was frightening and as I looked out at chaos, I thanked God that I was safe indoors and prayed that the rain would soon stop.

A Day In My Life

I’m generally a very happy-go-lucky kind of person, and it takes a lot to upset me. When I woke up today, for instance, it was with a smile. I had a huge amount of English homework due, but I completed the work in no time. I was also looking forward to playing hide-and-seek with my friends.

At school, the English teacher collected our homework. No wonder it had seemed so easy – I had done the wrong pages! The rest of the morning was fine, except I nearly fainted out of fear when I found a snake among my books and notebooks. It turned out to be a prank pulled by my little sister Anjana.

She had secretly slipped the rubber snake into my bag.

At last, it was the time to play hide-and-seek in the playground. When it was my turn to seek friends hiding in the bushes, I used the snake to bring them out and caught them easily! They later accused me of unfair play. I laughed and replied, “All is fair in hide-and-seek!”

The Koshi river flooded last week due to heavy rainfall. It caused massive damage in the Terai region.

Because of the flood, huge amounts of water rushed into the nearby towns. Thousands of people lost their homes. The government provided shelter and food for the displaced people. Non -governmental organizations also provided help and support.

There were many accounts of heroic deeds. Rescue workers and volunteers risked everything to save those in danger. Hundreds of families were rescued because of the bravery of these people. Many animals, which had been abandoned by their owners, were saved too.

Koshi flood caused great damage to life and property. Five people died, many became homeless and farmers lost their crops. After the flood subsided, people realized that the forces of nature were hard to understand and difficult to avoid. They started rebuilding everything.

A GiftFrom Heaven

Khushi had always wanted a yak. Where she lived, in the Mustang Valley, it seemed as if everyone had a yak.

One day, Khushi saw a little yak stuck on a pathway down a cliff. A rock was blocking its way, and it couldn’t move up or down. Khushi inched down the path, speaking softly to the yak. When she reached the yak, she took off her scarf and looped it around the yak’s neck.

Khushi and the yak walked down the path together. When they reached home, Dad came to see them.

“Can I keep him?” pleaded Khushi.

“Someone may come looking for him,” replied Dad, “If so, you will have to give him back.” Weeks went by, and no one came to claim him. Dad said at last that Khushi could have the yak.

“I will call him Akash,” said Khushi smilingly, “because he is my gift from heaven.

A Trip To Chobhar

I have been to many places but there is one place that I remember very well. We had gone on a field trip to Chobhar in September. It was a long drive from our school. We passed the time singing songs in the bus.

At last we reached and were excited to visit the caves we had heard so much about.

My teacher kept telling us to stay together and be careful. I knew she was afraid because the river down below looked very scary. There were so many caves but we were not allowed to enter even one. We were told that many people had got lost in them and died. That really frightened me and my friends. The caves did look cold and very dark. We visited a temple nearby and received blessings from the priest.

After that, we sat down to eat the snacks that we had brought. A few of my friends played badminton. The rest of us took turns singing songs with our teacher. Before leaving, we spent some time walking around.

We were very careful and held each other’s hands. The fall down to the river looked really dangerous. It was a nice cool day and we enjoyed the beautiful weather.

At last, it was time to leave. We got into the bus eager to reach school and tell everyone about the dark, scary caves. Our trip to Chhobar had been wonderful. It had been a real adventure and a trip that I will always remember.

Amateur detective Nita Shahi was engrossed in a detective story in her room.

Suddenly, she heard her mother mumbling.

“Is something wrong, Mum?” Nita asked.

“My nail polishes are missing,” Nita’s mother replied.

That was all she needed to hear. She said, “I will find them in no time!” She called, “Arrow, we have a job to do.” Nita’s mother looked doubtful, but she let Arrow, their pet dog, sniff the nail polish on her fingernails, anyway. Nita and her mother followed Arrow to the garden. The nail polishes were lying under a tree.

“Unbelievable, Arrow!” her mother exclaimed.

Nita patted Arrow and said, “Thanks. Arrow is my detective partner, Mum. Just wait until I grow up, and Arrow will catch thieves with me!”

I Felt Like A Hero

Once last July, I decided to visit the Botanical Garden which is in Godavari. It is very big and has plants of all kinds and sizes.

I entered after buying my ticket and took a stroll around the place. While walking down one of the paths, I happened to look up and saw a nest hanging over the branch of a tree. Two fully-grown robins were lying around making quite a noise. They seemed very upset. I guessed rightly that there were baby birds in the nest which looked like it was going to fall any moment.

I could have walked away but I wondered what would happen to the babies if the nest fell to the ground. They would not survive the fall, and if they did, they would surely die soon with all the dogs and bigger birds around.

I looked around for a stick and found a long, forked one close by. I picked it up but could not reach the nest. It was too high up on the tree. I had to climb up slowly, and reaching out, I slowly pushed the nest back onto the safety of the branch. The mother and father robins flew around my head warning me to stay away.

I climbed down and walked away after making sure that nothing further would cause the nest to fall. After spending some time walking around, I returned home.

I visited again the next day and noticed the mother robin stuffing worms into her little one’s beaks. How happy I was. I had done my good deed, and even though it would not make the headlines in the Kathmandu Post, I still felt like a hero.

LifeAt Home

We live in a nice flat in a quiet neighbourhood in Pokhara. Ours is a small family of three that consists of my father, mother and I. Sometimes, our relatives and neighbours visit us.

We share many moments of fun and laughter every day. I spend much of my time in my father’s library, reading books or seeing pictures. I watch good programmes on television. In the afternoons, I play indoor games with my mother. She often finds time to tell me stories. In the evenings, she helps me with my homework.

I have a few pets and a dog, a cat and a parrot. I spend a lot of time with them. I take care of them and give them their food. I take my dog for a walk around the block every evening as exercise is good for him. When I get back from school, my pets always seem happy to see me.

I miss my father’s company very much as he works long hours. He has to stay away from home almost the whole day. He comes home at 8:30 as his office is very far from our home. So during my holidays, I never let him alone. He likes my company, too, even though at times I am very naughty.

Ours is an ideal home, happy and peaceful, where no one complains about anything.

My 12th Birthday

Yesterday was a very special day for me as it was my 12th birthday.

I woke up early in the morning and before I was out of bed, I noticed a big parcel on my study table. I quickly leaped out of my cozy bed and started unwrapping the gift. I was thrilled to see the gift as it was something I had wanted ever since I was a small kid. Daddy and mommy had gifted me with a beautiful watch and a matching dress to wear with it. All of a sudden, they came out from behind the curtains as they were hiding the whole time and watching me open the gift. They sang the birthday song for me. I was very happy to receive their gift.

Then we all headed towards the dining hall and had a very tasty breakfast. We all then started getting ready for the birthday bash. Daddy had said that this birthday we would not be inviting any of the friends and it would just be the three of us celebrating. But I always wanted to have friends on my birthday. We spent the afternoon decorating the house and in the evening daddy took me to the mall to get my big chocolate cake. Our car broke down in the middle of the road and because of this, we were very late.

When we reached home the house seemed to be really quiet and all the lights were put off. I opened the main door and suddenly the lights came and all of my friends started cheering and wishing me. I was amazed to see all of my friends on my birthday. Daddy and mommy had planned to surprise me and I was very happy with their surprise. I put on the dress daddy and mommy had gifted me and we cut the cake after sometime. We all played many games too. I got many presents from my friends.

I was very tired at the end of the day. After all my friends left, I opened each of their gifts and I liked all of them. Daddy and mommy made my 12th birthday the most memorable one.

A Picnic

A picnic is a great way to spend the day away from home and enjoy with friends and family. I like going for picnics. The best one that I have been for was with my mum, dad and sister.

We went to Godavari Park. It is very far from my house. We went by van. We had to buy our entrance tickets before entering.

My sister and I ran ahead of our parents picking up pebbles along the way. At last we reached a little pond. There we spent some time seeing who could throw the pebbles the farthest. I won, of course, as my sister is much younger than me.

My parents found us a nice, shady spot to sit down. While they rested, we ran off to play with the ball that we had brought along with us. Some other children, who were there too, joined us and we played a noisy game of football.

After the game, they left and my sister and I went back to join our parents. Mum had unpacked the food she had prepared for us.

There were warm momos, chicken soup, chowmein and boiled eggs. We also had apples and grapes. It was a lovely feast.

After eating, we walked around looking at the different plants.

We visited all the greenhouses. What big palms they have at the park! My dad took a lot of nice photographs.

At last, it was time to leave. The journey back seemed extra-long because we were all so tired. I was happy to reach home after that wonderful picnic.

MyNewKite

One windy day, I got a new kite. I was very curious to fly a kite after a long time. My uncle took me to a big field to fly it. When we opened the package, a strong wind blew the instructions away. My uncle had a tough time putting the kite together.

It wasn’t easy because the wind kept blowing everything, but we got it put together. Then my uncle let me hold the kite in my hand. A huge gust of wind came by. I released the kite, held onto the string, and the kite went with the wind way up in the sky. I kept on letting more and more string out until all the string was out. My kite was so high I could hardly see it. I thought that it looked like a tiny dot.

Suddenly, it got close to a tree. I pulled it in the opposite direction. My kite was in trouble. To make matters worse, it started to rain. As I pulled my kite, it started to rain heavily. I saved my kite just in time.

I can’t wait for the next windy day to fly my kite again.

TakingPart In The Annual Sports Day

Every year, our school holds the Annual Sports Day. I usually prefer to watch my friends compete in different events, and I cheer for them. This year, however, I decided it was time to surprise everyone. I was determined to take part in the hundred-metre race.

I knew it would be difficult because I hadn’t taken part in any sports competitions before. So first, I made a plan to help me fulfil my objective. Next, I asked the P.T. instructor to help me train. After four weeks of training on the playground and at home, I felt I was finally ready.

When the Annual Sports Day arrived, everyone was pleasantly surprised! All my classmates supported and cheered for me during the race. On top of that I didn’t just take part in the race, but won it too. It just goes to show that one can do anything if one really wants to.

Ogali And The Sick Chimp

One evening, the king returned from a walk in the forest to find Ogali at the gate, staring at the chimpanzees.

“What are you doing here, Chimp Coach?” He asked.

“I worry about Kinkaku,” she replied. “I love every one of the chimpanzees and know them well. I sense there is some sort of problem with him.” The king pondered for a moment and said, “Go ahead and check.” Ogali approached Kinkaku, the king’s favourite chimp. She studied his hands and feet. When Ogali got to the left foot, she discovered a sharp nail lodged in the pad. Ogali took the nail out slowly, sang Kinkaku a soothing song and went home.

The next day, when Ogali returned, Kinkaku greeted her and played with her for hours.

The king was overjoyed. He declared an evening feast and invited everyone in the kingdom to the palace.

This was a story shared to me by my South African friend.

TheEarthquakeOf25th April

There were a lot of customers at the barber’s shop so I had to wait for my turn. I was looking at the mirror when it started shaking. When I turned to the barber and other customers, they started running and I did the same.

I realized it was an earthquake, a big one. They ran to an open space but I ran in the opposite direction. I was worried about my family. It took me less than a minute to reach the house. My mother was alone there and she was crying. I took her hand and we rushed towards a ground near our house. Mom was still crying, she was worried about brother and dad. We tried to call them several times but we were unsuccessful.

After sometime, we received a call from dad. He said he was safe. My brother also called and told us he was safe too. Mom and I didn’t know what to do so we stayed there with the neighbors. Everyone looked sad and afraid. We could feel some tremors time and again and we would get scared.

We could listen to people speaking and they said that the earthquake was of 7.8 on the Richter scale. But some people said it was 8.1. The quake had lasted for about 50 seconds and had killed a lot of people. I heard people saying that somewhere near a kid had died. It felt very bad.

Homework

Many people think that teachers give pupils too much homework. But teachers say that it is necessary for children to work at home in their free time. Moreover, people say that most teachers do not plan the homework they give to pupils properly. The result is that pupils have to repeat assignments which have already been done at school.

I believe this to be true as I feel that homework is just a repetition of what we have done in class. I usually go home after school with a lot of homework. It is sad to know that I cannot play with my younger brothers. Instead, I have to sit alone and complete about twenty sums which is my homework. Besides this, we also get two other subjects of learning and writing, too.

By the time I finish, it is usually time for dinner and then bed.

The holidays are worse as we are given assignments in all the subjects. Childhood is meant to be enjoyed, but with all this homework, is there time for any enjoyment? I don’t think so.

I wish teachers would not give us any homework. That would make children happy.

Children Should Go To School

Childhood is considered as the most important stage of human life. A person can learn more in the childhood than the rest of his or her life. So education is highly essential in childhood and proper education is obtained in schools.A school is a place where formal education is gained which is the most important tool to produce capable human resource.

To start with, good education is the first step towards a bright career. The curriculum that they follow ensures that they gain the skills necessary to get into colleges. Schools not only provide theoretical knowledge but also practical knowledge. For example, the children spend time with other children of same age. In that duration they learn to communicate. They learn the value of team work. They develop a sense of competition and they help each other. In this way they prepare themselves for the real world.

Furthermore, the schools make their students follow rules and regulations which condition them to be well disciplined. As they are used to following rules from their childhood, they will follow the laws of the country. This will lead to a more civilized and responsible generation.

To conclude, school education plays a vital role in shaping an individual’s career. It makes the students able enough to distinguish between right and wrong and overall provide a good foundation for progess of the nation.

Picking Up Clothes

Lots of students in this hostel leave their clothes on the floor. It makes me very angry because I think they should pick them up themselves.

It is not at all fair that I have to pick them up every day.

Sometimes there are both clean clothes and dirty clothes on the floor. They all get mixed up and I have to wash all the clothes again.

The clothes scattered on the floor make the dormitory look very messy and untidy. There is lots of space in their cupboard for their clothes. So they should put their clothes inside the cupboard rather than throwing them on the floor.

They should put their clean clothes in their cupboard as it will help them find their clothes as soon as they search for them. They should put their dirty clothes in the basket which is placed in the bathroom. This way it will make my work easy as I will only have to wash dirty clothes.

It is now time for some changes. They should be responsible enough to keep their dormitory clean. From now on I am never going to pick up their scattered clothes. Rather I will complain to the hostel warden.

Class Captain

I think that I would make a very good class captain and there are many reasons why you should vote for me.

The first reason for voting for me is that I am very good in my studies.

I have always produced excellent grades. I am dedicated and my work assignments are always up to date. I can guide those students who need help in any subject.

Secondly, I am good in sports and enjoy playing all games. I always take part in school activities. I have won many medals and trophies for myself and for my school.

Thirdly, I enjoy helping my community. I have spent many weekends visiting the old people’s home, assisting my neighbours to clean our surroundings and taking care of little children when their parents had errands to run.

So, as you can see, I am an all-rounder. As the school captain, I can and will bring about many positive changes.

Vote for me and you will see.

EducationAt Home

The government would save a lot of money. It would not need to build schools, pay teachers, pay electricity and heating bills, pay for books and materials. The money saved can be used for important things like feeding the homeless, medical research and improving hospitals.

Technology has improved so much. Children can learn as much at home from computers. Parents could be trained on how to educate children.

There would be no distractions. For example, when children are taught in a noisy room, they cannot learn very much, but sitting in the quietness of their home they can learn a lot.

There will be no bullying. When children are bullied they do not learn anything as their minds are occupied by the fear of bullying. This would not be a problem at home.

Children would be at home. There will be no fear of accidents on the way to or from schools. Parents will not have to worry about their children talking to strangers.

AdoptingPetsFrom Animal Shelters

Owning a pet from the animal shelter has many advantages.

First of all, a child feels good about rescuing an abandoned or abused animal and giving it a whole new life. Besides, having a pet also means lots of responsibilities. A child has to feed, clean up after, brush, and exercise the pet.

Another great advantage of having a pet from the shelter is the price of these cute and cuddly animals. Pets from these shelters cost a lot less than pets at a fancy pet store, which can cost a lot.

Once you adopt a pet from the Animal Rescue Shelters, it will quickly become a part of your family. If you are thinking of adopting a pet, you might consider choosing a dog or a cat. Dogs and cats can bring lots of happy times to a family, and they can be excellent companions for a person who lives alone or someone who has lost a loved one. Dogs are also a wonderful source of protection. Cats are funny, and they may help to calm people down when they are sad or mad.

Instead of buying a pet from expensive pet stores, we should consider adopting an animal. If we keep in mind all of the advantages of adopting a pet from the shelter, we might find the bird, mouse, rabbit, dog, or cat of our choice and feel good about it.

BenefitsOfSchool

In my opinion, going to school is an important part of growing up. For this reason, I would say that school is both useful and necessary.

First of all, children get an education there, as well as learning important social skills, such as how to relate to others and be part of a team. It also teaches them discipline, the importance of following rules and a respect for authority. Apart from that, school is an excellent place to make friends.

However, it cannot be denied that in some cases schools do not teach children the skills required to live and work in the real world. Critics often claim that some of the subjects taught are no longer relevant.

Nevertheless, I still believe that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

In conclusion, I think that, overall, school is beneficial to children. It would be better to change teaching methods rather than close schools altogether, because if that were to happen, a lot of children would be missing out on an important part of childhood.

Banning Hand-held Computer Games From School

My name is Nima Sherpa. I attend Saipal Academy. I am firmly of the opinion that hand-held computer games should not be banned from schools.

Firstly, if they were banned, just imagine how many unhappy and lonely children there would be. You can play with them at recess with your friends, and they can even help you make new friends.

Secondly, hand held computer games does not interfere with our schoolwork. Yes, occasionally people would get caught playing with them in class. However, if there were rules and punishments, this would be kept under control.

Lastly, these games develop hand-eye c-ordination, and they are quiet! As a result I can’t, imagine any reasons why teachers would object to this!

My argument is conclusive- hand held computer games at school are harmless. Moreover, they are fun, help you make friends, can be controlled and are good for us. Therefore, “DON’T BAN THEM.”

Making Our Own Bed

I make my own bed every day. Most of the children do not. I think all children should make their own every day.

When we were little we couldn’t make our bed. Our parents made it for us. Now we are big enough to make it ourselves. We aren’t babies anymore.

Our parents do lots of things for us like washing our clothes and cooking food. Making a bed is easy to do. Our parents should not have to do that too.

Some children leave their bed unmade all day. A bedroom looks awful with a messy, unmade bed.

It is much better to sleep in a bed that has been made. The sheets and mattress are nice and smooth. There are no wrinkles and bumps.

If you already make your own bed, that’s great! If you don’t, I think you should start making your own bed right now.

Learn To Swim

I think everyone must learn to swim!

Hundreds of children and adults drown every year. Some of them fall in to rivers and dams and lots of people drown in the sea and in swimming pools. A drowning can happen so quickly and so quietly that people don’t even know its happening. Some of these people’s lives could have been saved if they had learnt how to swim.

You are never too old or too young to learn how to swim. My mum taught me how to swim before I could walk because she was so worried I’d fall into our pool and drown.

My grandma learnt how to swim in case one of us fell into the pool when she was looking after us. She says that if she could learn to swim, other old people can too.

Think about all the great things you can do if you’re not frightened by water. Things like diving, sailing, fishing, surfing and canoeing. I think it’s sad some people don’t feel safe when they do these things because they can’t swim.

Can you swim? If you can’t, you must learn. This could save your life or someone else’s life and you will be able to do lots of great water sports too.

Friends

Some people do not treat their friends in a right way. I think we should look after our friends because they play a very important role in our life.

Think about what it would be like in the absence of our friends. I think it would be horrible and you would feel very lonely. You should always remember that they won’t remain friends with you if you are mean to them.

Some people don’t share things with their friends. I think this is silly, because if you share things with your friends then they will also share their things with you in return and you’ll both have more fun things to do together.

You should speak nicely and politely with your friends. You don’t like people yelling at you, do you? If you yell and shout at them, they will not want to play and spend time with you.

Friends have feelings. It is very important not to hurt them. If you accidentally say something that might hurt your friends, then you should say sorry and be friends again. If your friend tells you something that might hurt you and if he/she is sorry about it, then you should forgive and forget and become friends again.

I like spending time with my friends. I like doing good things for my friends. I sometimes give them little things which make them smile. I like it when my friends are happy; it makes me feel happy too.

I think that if we are kind and nice to our friends, then they will also be good to us. Friends are very necessary as they give us company when we are lonely. So we should treat our friends in the right way.

Dental Hygiene

Many people do not take good care of their teeth. I think people need to understand why they should look after their teeth and how to do it.

If we don’t look after our teeth, they will decay and then break and fall out. Then they will look horrible and may hurt a lot.

We need our teeth for biting our food, imagine trying to eat meat, carrots and also crisp apples without any teeth. We would be like little babies his false teeth out, he sounds funny. I would hate to sound like that.

My little sister told our grandfather she wished she could take her teeth out like he does. He said he’d love to have his own teeth back because he can’t chew his food properly and they hurt his mouth. They also cost him a lot of money.

Looking after our teeth is really not that hard. All we need to do is clean them properly after eating, Brush twice a day, try not to eat or drink too many sweet things and visit the dentist to have our teeth and gums checked.

Our teeth are very important. I would hate to live without my teeth or with rotten ones. We must look after our teeth. It is quite easy.

ChildrenNeedTheirFreedom

We live in a very different world than that of our grandparents.

Everything has changed so much. Lifestyles have changed. Fashion has gone from gowns and waistcoats to baggy, low-waisted jeans, tee-shirts, short dresses and crazy hairstyles.

Eating habits have also changed. A plate of rice and curry is a thing that is long forgotten. Today, burgers, momos, pizzas and hotdogs are very popular. Children nowadays want to eat junk food rather than a nutritious meal.

Music has taken a totally different path, too. Slow music is a thing of the past. But then, do adults look at things from our point of view? Do they realize that people and their lifestyles change over time?

To them, all these things are bad for us. They insist on forcing outdated rules and regulations on us. They believe that the west is changing our way of thinking and that we are being influenced by what we see on television. But that is not true. Yes, I do agree that our style of dressing is not as proper, our eating habits not so healthy and our views not so acceptable when compared to that of children many years ago. There are, of course, a lot of negative points to how we want to live our lives.

But children should be given the freedom to choose between right and wrong. This is how we will learn. Imposing restrictions on us will not help us to make the right choices in life. We have the right to make mistakes and then learn not to repeat them.

So, I strongly feel that children need their freedom to grow and become adults in their own way, but with a little guidance from a caring adult.

I would also get people to plant many trees. More trees would mean more fresh air as trees take in all the impure air from the atmosphere. Our country would be even more beautiful with the greenery.

Another thing that I would like to change would be, utilizing our rivers to generate electricity. We have so many big rivers but we have not been able to make use of this gift. LetterTo A Cousin (2)

Write a letter to your cousin welcoming him to your neighbourhood and talking about it.

House No. 416 Main Road, Budhanilkantha 21 October 2016

Dear Jay,

I was so pleased to receive your letter the other day. I was even happier to hear that you and your family will be shifting to our neighbourhood next month. We are going to have so much fun together.

You are really going to enjoy staying in my neighbourhood. It is a wonderful, peaceful area with a lot of greenery and open spaces to play. Unlike other areas, my neighbourhood is not polluted at all. The houses are beautiful and I am sure that your parents will find the house of their dreams.

The roads are well-maintained and kept clean. People throw their garbage in the roadside bins and no one is allowed to litter the roads. If anyone is caught doing so, they have to pay a fine.

There are many nice shops where we can shop together. You are going to be happy here.

Please do write and let me know the exact date when you and your family will be coming here.

Take care.

Your cousin, Anisha

LetterTo Grandparents

Write a letter to your grandparents suggesting to them what they should gift your sister on her birthday.

House No. 111 Chakrapath, Kathmandu 04 September 2012

Dear Grandma and Grandpa,

I am glad to hear that all is well and that you will be coming for Meghna’s 10th birthday party. She is looking forward to it. Mom and dad are getting things ready from now even though it is still a week away.

Mom told me that you were not sure what to get Meghna for her birthday. Well, I have an idea. She has taken a sudden interest in skateboarding with her friends every weekend. I know she will be very excited to get a skateboard as a birthday gift.

Bhat-Bhateni Supermarket in Mahrajgunj has a wide selection of skateboards. I saw some lovely ones there the other day. The blue and white one was not so costly, too. Why don’t you go there one of these days and see for yourself? I know Meghna will think it the best gift of all.

Let me know how things go, and if you need me to go along with you, I will be happy to do so. Please keep me informed.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Lots of love,

Your grandson, Nitesh

LetterTo The Editor (1)

Write a letter to the editor reporting about the poor condition of the roads and streets in your locality.

B-118, Krishna Complex Maharajgunj, Kathmandu August 4, 2016

The EditorThe Himalayan Times Kathmandu

Sir,

I would like to bring to the notice of the concerned authorities through the columns of your paper about the poor condition of the roads and streets in our locality.

The roads in Maharajgunj are in a very bad condition due to the road-widening work that is going on these past two months. This project should have been done either before or after the rainy season.

The roads and streets have become extremely muddy and difficult to walk on. Besides, all the debris from the demolished buildings is left lying on the roads for days, causing severe traffic jams.

It is time that the authorities took steps to solve this problem at the earliest.

Yours sincerely, B.K. Adhikari

Dear sir/ madam,

It is terrible that people have started to throw away garbage near our home. It stinks a lot. Our family has been suffering from headache and cough due to that. In addition, the flies and other insects directly come to our house due to the garbage there.

We even talked to the local people about it but they don’t seem to listen.

Even the garbage collecting van is not coming these days.

We hope that the Metropolis will send the garbage collectors to collect it soon.

The Coordinator XYZ SchoolDhobighat

Dear Sir,

We, the students of grade six, would like to make some suggestions regarding the improvement in the school canteen.

Due to lack of chairs in the canteen we are forced to stand and take our lunch. As the space is small, it is mostly crowded. Because of this we are compelled to wait for a long time for our turns.

So we would like you to make necessary arrangements regarding the space and recruit more staff so that we don’t have to wait for long for our turns.

We would also humbly request you to timely check on the quality of the food they are serving us.

We would be grateful to you for your consideration in this matter.

Yours obediently, Students of class sixXYZ School

LetterTo The Editor (2)

Write a letter to the editor of a daily newspaper bringing light upon the conversion of a park into a parking area.

244 Ranighat, Birgunj 04 March 2016

The Editor Prateek Daily Birgunj Dear Sir,

Town leaders want to turn a vacant lot near my apartment building into a parking area. My community has been tending a garden in it for years. For many people in our area, a park is more useful than a parking lot.

We ought to weigh the benefits of each one. First, everybody agrees that greenery adds beauty to any neighborhood. Also, people from one to ninety-one can enjoy a park. The park is a safe place for children to play and a space for the community to work together.

On the other hand, a parking area will benefit only car owners and the parking operators. As a bare concrete space, it will never match the beauty of a garden.

It is obvious that a green park is a much more valuable choice than yet another parking lot. Please print my letter so others will be aware of this issue.

I will be obliged if you can kindly grant me full fee concession for the academic year 2016-2017. My father is in a very serious condition and is in hospital for the past four months. He will not be able to return to work even after his treatment. My mother is a teacher in a small school and she is finding it very hard to manage to support our family of six.

I am afraid that if you refuse my request, I may have to leave school and take up a job to help my family. I assure you that I will continue to study hard and produce excellent results as always.

I sincerely hope that you will help me in this matter.

Write a letter to the editor talking about the criticism of TV programmes.

Peepalbot, New Road Kathmandu 16 May 2016

The Editor The Kathmandu Post Kathmandu

Sir,

I must thank you for your criticism of the TV programmes. The Nepali channels seem to be owned by big businessmen and TV programmes are just boring. Even the national programmes lack imagination and bore us.

Children of my age cannot enjoy the programmes that are meant for adults like our parents. We want fun and we want to learn a lot more about our world. We want to watch creative programmes that stimulate our brain.

I would suggest a channel for children of my age.

This channel should produce programmes and films that we can really enjoy.
