Principal’s Message
Reminder to call school if your child will be late or absent
One measure of keeping our students safe is to ensure we can account for any absences or reasons for being late to school. We would like to remind you that if your child is going to be absent or late for any reason, we ask that you contact the school immediately and report the reason for the absence. If we are not informed about the absence, we will make attempts to contact you through our automated call-out system to determine the reason for the absence. To find out how this automated system works please visit http://www.tdsb.on.ca/HighSchool/CaringSafeSchools/SafeArrivalProgram.aspx Please let the office know by calling 416-393-9450 if your contact information, including phone number, changes at any time throughout the school year. Thank you for your continued cooperation to keep your children safe and accounted for. Keeping Kids Safe
Drivers are reminded to do their part to keep children safe near school buses.
Drivers should follow these tips:
- Stop and never pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing.
- Leave space around school buses and avoid blocking school bus loading zones so children can enter and exit safely.
- Be prepared to stop for a school bus at any time, not just during school hours. - Always obey the rules of the road and watch for children, especially in school zones.
- Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks and school crossings.
Parents can also help keep their children safe by reminding them to be aware of their surroundings when they are on or near school buses. High School Information Nights To help you make an informed decision when choosing a high school, TDSB schools host information nights for parents and
grade 8 students each year between October and January. Learn everything you need to know about our incredible variety
of schools, programs and courses. The dates and times for all High School Information Nights are available online at
www.tdsb.on.ca/highschool/goingtohighschool
Parent-Teacher Interviews Regular parent-teacher communication is an important part of student learning. Parent-teacher interviews are scheduled throughout the year after report cards are sent home. (Thursday November 17th – 4:00 pm to 8:30 pm / Friday November 18th – 9:00 am to 12:00 pm). These interviews are your opportunity to ask questions about your child's progress and to discuss any issues. In addition to
regular scheduled parent-teacher interviews, you can request a meeting at any time during the school year by contacting
the school or your child's teacher directly.
Take Our Kids to Work Day
The TDSB is supporting Take Our Kids to Work Day on Wednesday, November 2. This is the day when Grade 9 students
across Ontario will be accompanying a parent, relative or friend to the workplace.
The initiative gives students an opportunity to view the work that adults do and gain an understanding and appreciation for
the challenges people face daily and the accomplishments that are achieved. This opportunity helps students think about
the choices they will have to make and the path they must follow to meet their future career goals.
All employees are invited to bring a grade 9 student (child, relative or friend) to work on that day. Please join us in welcoming these students at our school. Remembrance Day On Wednesday, November 11, students and staff at our school and across the city will mark Remembrance Day with
classroom activities and school assemblies. During Remembrance Day, our teachers make connections between global
events and students' lives by promoting peace within our school community. On this solemn occasion, our staff, students,
parents, and the wider community all join together in a call for peace.

Guidance News A Message from Guidance
Over the next last couple of weeks all Grade 8 students have been
introduced to an exciting education planning resource. MyBlueprint is
an Education Planner that lets your child create an engaging and
interactive education plan . They can build customized high school
course plans, instantly identify the post-secondary options that are
available to them and explore valuable information about
apprenticeships, college programs, university programs and workplace
opportunities across Canada! With direct access from home, parents
can also get more informed and involved with your child’s
education. Log in and learn about courses, graduation requirements and
the endless options available to your child. From their profile, your child
will be able to set goals, save unlimited plans, short-list programs and
occupations of interest, record extra-curricular activities and more. This
online Individual Pathways Plan stays with students as they transition to
secondary school. To access the site, visit www.myblueprint.ca/tdsb , as
well on my blog I have attached "How to get Started" pamphlet,
(http://newsfromguidance.blogspot.ca). Over the next few weeks, be sure to ask your son/daughter to share their
account with you so you can explore the website with them. MyBlueprint
helps ensure you can assist your child in making the most informed
decision about their education.
Please feel free to contact me with any question you may have,

Fall Library Update
The library has all classes scheduled for regular library times and is open
for full school book exchange the periods before and after lunch.
We are very fortunate to have hosted author Kevin Sylvester for the grades
4 to 8 students on Friday, October 28th
. His first book in the new MINRS
series is one of the Forest of Reading Selections in the Red Maple category.
The Forest of Reading event, put on by the Ontario Library Association, is
always a special feature of our library and continues this year. This
program is a great way to get children and families excited about reading.
Please go online to forestfestivaloftrees.ca for more information. The
books will be catalogued for borrowing by early November.
Our ‘Library Hang-Out” aka Book Club will be starting the first week of
November. This is a drop in on Mondays and Wednesdays after the
students have had their lunches (no food or drink in the library). There
will be a sign-in but other than that there is no registration. Student can
come and read and chat about books with their friends and with me and
get some great recommendations.
With Remembrance Day approaching we have a display of many
interesting and thoughtful books to borrow to get students thinking about
the past and hopefully the future.
Also, the library has a number of the new graphic novel, The Secret Path,
available. Classes have already signed on to share this difficult part of our
history. The library has a growing collection of books related to Indigenous
Peoples and our history. If you have some suggestions, please get in touch
with me.
Finally, the Learnmarks for the Virtual Library have been sent home so it is
hoped that families are taking full advantage of this amazing resource. If
you have not received this please let me know.
Happy reading,
Sara Erskine Librarian
This is a friendly reminder that dogs are not allowed on school property.
We truly appreciate your cooperation in keeping our children safe!
