I am the newly elected Chair of the Graduate Student Council (GSC). I am a second year Doctoral student at the School of Nursing. The GSC and I want to extend a very warm welcome to the new and returning graduate and law students. The multiple graduate programs offered, the diverseness, and the brilliance of the graduate student community represents the University of San Diego’s academic eminence and rigor. The Graduate Student Council’s mission is to provide opportunities for networking, advocate for and serve as a resource, and to promote an active, engaged graduate student community. As we embark upon a new academic year the demands are high however, it is because of this that the rewards are so great. GSC is here to help navigate the complexities graduate and law students often encounter. I am excited about what lies ahead for our community. We have begun to implement processes that would allow for the dissemination of information and resources to be streamlined and readily available. We have initiated discussion forums for graduate organization student leaders to voice their and their constituents’ issues/concerns. We continue to provide community events in which we encourage all graduate and law students to attend. This year our key area of focus is to elevate the Graduate Student Council’s presence among the graduate student community. It is essential that the GSC has its ‘finger on the pulse’ of the graduate community because we represent you, we advocate for you, and we serve you! The Restorative Practices Workshop will focus on developing a restorative lens in all of our peace building work. You will become a trained Restorative Conference Facilitator who will
have the tools to bring victims, offenders, and community members together in a face-‐to-‐face dialogue to discuss specific harms. You will also be empowered to lead Dialoguing Circles to
address controversial topics, and build meaningful connections in community. These skills were born out of indigenous practices around the world and are becoming more well-‐known in the U.S. through the criminal justice system, providing deeper learning in classrooms, and building
community within organizations. A Restorative Justice Program is in its third year of development at USD, meaning there are many opportunities to connect the tools and theories you learn in this workshop to practice with real restorative cases on campus, in our local San
Diego community, and internationally.

RELAY FOR LIFE is a branch of Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) here at USD. This is a 24-‐hour event that will be held on March 21st to the 22nd, 2014 to raise money for cancer awareness, education, and research. This USD tradition is a powerful
opportunity to bring together the whole USD community as we celebrate and remember those who have been affected by this disease. There will be a Survivor’s Ceremony, Luminaria
Ceremony, food, activities, entertainment, and so much more! Last year we had an impressive showing of over 750 participants to raise over $40,000, this year we will continue to fight harder
against a disease that has taken too much.
Although the event is months away, we encourage everyone to start creating their teams and fundraising! Everyone and anyone is welcome to the event, so bring your friends, family, neighbors, and even strangers! To find out more information or sign up

Teresa Smith, recent graduate alum, in the School of Leadership and Education Sciences’ Nonprofit Leadership and Management program, is CEO of the nonprofit Dreams for Change. She focused on a variety of ideas to help the city’s homeless, Dreams for Change’s mobile "The Fresh" food truck services its customers with items that are prepared with healthy ingredients, inexpensive through the use of Cal-Fresh benefits/EBT cards. Smith’s dream received a major boost when she won a top prize of $10,000 in USD’s second annual Social Innovation Challenge in April. The money, she said, helped cover the costs associated with purchasing the truck, supplies and more so she could launch the idea this summer.

The Social Innovation Challenge (SIC) promotes, guides, and supports student-driven ideas to launch or to contribute to existing social enterprises by for-profit, hybrid and nonprofit organizations, locally and abroad. The SIC has awarded $42,000 in cash prizes to students since its inception in 2010.
The Center for Peace and Commerce, in partnership with the Changemaker Hub, invites all student social innovators at the undergraduate and graduate levels at University of San Diego to propose ideas for achieving the 4 Ps—People, Planet, Peace and Profit.

Campus Recreation has over 70 different non-credit recreation classes that are great for de-stressing and awesome for overall fitness too. All of our on campus recreation classes can be taken as non-credit and that schedule can be found at:
Outdoor Adventures (OA) serves the USD community with opportunities to experience outdoor activities that aim to promote personal growth, leadership development, relationship building and environmental responsibility. We offer a variety of local, regional and international outings that includes Pre-Orientation Adventure, overnight trips, outdoor recreation classes and day trips around San Diego. We also operate a rental shop and resource center for individuals that choose to venture on their own excursions and need some equipment or guidance.
