Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen and the Graduating Class of 2017, I am honoured to have the opportunity to welcome you to this all important and memorable occasion.
Today we are gathered to celebrate with all of you who through hard work and endurance have gone through the changing processes of your academic endeavours and have attained the highest awards in your respective fields of study. Permit me to take this opportunity to congratulate all our graduating groups for their excellent achievements and the honours they are about to receive. While the roads that you have each taken to reach this point vary greatly from one another, the importance of your accomplishments does not. You are now graduates of this great global institution. Your many hours of study and dedication have paid off and you will now receive the reward of your labour. Change is certainly inevitable in each endeavour of our lives. Years ago you started your training at the bottom of the academic hill, on graduation you will again be starting on at the lower level of your career but I am confident and hopeful that with the training and exposure you have acquired, you will keep climbing to endless heights.
I wish to remind you that graduates from the University of Ghana are uniquely prepared to combine their skills and knowledge to positively impact on society and humanity at large. You have acquired an understanding of your role in the society; so as you journey on into a professional world filled with infinite possibilities, I hope you make the University of Ghana proud by being hard-working, innovative and committed to your goals. Be ethical in your future work, lead meaningful lives, be of integrity, aspire to have positive influence on the society, and be willing to make a difference irrespective of the cost.
With great power comes an even greater responsibility. Challenges and tough choices are awaiting you, how you deal with them will be of great significance to humanity. Let me also remind you to continue to climb the hills of learning without despair, stay focused and never look back. Success is a journey, not a destination. Receiving your degrees today does not signal an end but rather the beginning of a long journey. Henceforth your dreams, visions, ambitions and aspirations will become clearer. You will make decisions and choices for yourselves so be dependent of God for guidance and wisdom.
I also wish to take this occasion to congratulate your parents and loved ones who have in various ways sacrificed to see you to this level and to be with you on this special occasion. This day is not an achievement for you alone; it belongs to them as well. You owe them a debt of gratitude for their support and I believe that you will continue to make them proud even after today.
Finally, I invite you to continue to be part of the University community. Share your knowledge with the world, let your professional accomplishment shine and relentlessly commit yourselves to selfless distinguished service till we hear of you in the global annals of life. The University of Ghana is very indeed proud of you. Our doors remain open for guidance and counselling in all aspects of your lives.
On behalf of the University of Ghana, I once again congratulate you all and wish you every success in your all your future endeavours.
Ayekoo!!!

Mrs. Nana Serwaa Twum-Duodu is one of the four valedictorians for the July, 2017 Congregation. She is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Pediatric Option) from the School of Nursing and Midwifery with a Final Grade Point Average of 3.75. She attended Achimota School.
Mrs. Twum-Duodu had the opportunity to choose between the University of Ghana and other universities for her training but decided to choose the former because it is the premier university in Ghana. She noted that the University of Ghana offers a wide variety of courses which prepare every individual it nurtures into a complete whole; so that individual lacks nothing when there is the need for the person to deliver. She says “the University of Ghana has produced undoubtedly the greatest leaders in Ghana and that has always been a source of inspiration to her. She wanted to be part of this great family.
She aspires to be a professor of Nursing so she can positively influence the training of nurses and the practice of the nursing profession in Ghana and beyond. She also wants to be one of the greatest financiers in the house of God.

The College of Education celebrates all our graduating students, and salutes you all on this special day.
You have worked hard to be able to come this far, and as you go out into the next phase of your lives, I challenge you to endeavour to seek excellence and integrity wherever you find yourself, and to be disciplined and modest in all you do. Believing in yourself and having a can-do spirit is what will set you apart from others, and it is having that kind of mindset that will make you stand out and excel.
Some of you had already worked for some time before returning to school. You might find yourself in more responsible positions, with other workers looking up to you for guidance. To the ‘young’ graduates- you are going out to face the real world, with all its challenges and frustrations. The skills and training you have received at the College of Education of the University of Ghana are your best tools to face the challenges that will inevitably come your way head-on and come up with creative solutions to them. I urge you to put all you have learnt here into practice, particularly independent thought, decision making and value judgment.
Let me remind you of the motto of this institution, Integri Procedamus: Proceed with Integrity. As you go out into the world, I trust that you will take this motto as your guide, and that you will be noble ambassadors of this institution which has nurtured you and contributed to what you have become today. I wish you well in all of your endeavours, and may the hard work and discipline which you applied to your studies continue to direct you in all you do.
I urge you to do your best wherever you might find yourselves, and to be good ambassadors of your alma mater. You are all warmly invited to register and play an active part in alumni activities, and become members of the vast network of former students of this University.
Parents and guardians of our graduands; you deserve commendation for your emotional, financial and physical support. I assure you that the enormous sacrifices you have made to give your wards a University education were well worth it. Though they are passing out today as confident young graduates, they still need your guidance, and my prayer is that you will continue to provide the necessary support and direction to them as they venture into the wider world.

NATIONAL ANTHEM
1. God bless our homeland Ghana
And make our nation great and strong,
Bold to defend forever
The cause of Freedom and of Right.
Fill our hearts with true humility
Make us cherish fearless honesty,
And help us to resist oppressor’s rule
With all our will and might evermore.
2. Hail to thy Name, O Ghana
To thee we make our solemn vow
Steadfast to build together
A nation strong in Unity;
With our gift of mind and strength of arm
Whether night or day, in mist or storm,
In every need whate’er the call may be
To serve thee, Ghana, now and evermore.
3. Raise high the flag of Ghana
And one with Africa advance
Black Star of home and honour
To all who thirst for Liberty;
Where the banner of Ghana freely flies
May the way to freedom truly lie
Arise, arise, O Sons of Ghanaland,
And under God march on for evermore.
Composed by Philip Gbeho
