Hyperloop innovation meets 970 km/hRyerson’s International Hyperloop Team (RIHT) continues to impress with its deployable wheel system for Hyperloop pods – a new high-speed ground transportation system.Having won the Subsystem Innovation Award at the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod competition last year, RIHT was invited by SpaceX to demonstrate their technology in California in January 2017.
Hyperloop is anticipated to be a fifth mode of transportation: sending pods along near-vacuum tubes at speeds faster than commercial airlines (average speed is 970 km/h – that’s Toronto to Montreal in 35 minutes). The Ryerson team has designed a compact, deployable wheel system for use at slow speeds (when entering a station, for example). At the 2016 competition, RIHT was the only winning Canadian team and the only winning wheel system team, joining such recognized engineering giants as MIT. In the year since, Aerospace Engineering graduate students Graeme Klim, Moeid Elahi, Min Prasad Adhikari, Wintta Ghebreiyesus, and undergraduate students Tayo Shonibare and Jesse Brito have built a prototype in partnership with almost 20 industry sponsors, including lead partner Safran Landing Systems.
At Ryerson, students have opportunities to not only participate in projects with real-world impact but also lead them. Initiatives like RIHT’s Hyperloop deployable wheel system could help reshape transportation for the new millennium.
