Ormond is a unique learning community, offering extensive support for graduate students in their studies and ambitions. By joining Ormond you are part of a network of over 10,000 alumni around the world who have previously walked our halls, challenged themselves to perform at their best and gone on to make their mark in their chosen careers and endeavours post-university.

I invite you to engage in all the opportunities Ormond has on offer in order for you to truly make the most of your university and College experience. I look forward to your very individual contribution and the legacy you will leave, just like every Ormondian before you.

Lara McKay Master

On the behalf of the graduate cohort, welcome to the Ormond College Middle Common Room!

The academic, social and supportive opportunities afforded by being a graduate at Ormond help you to not only survive, but thrive throughout your studies. Our community is a melting pot for personal and professional development. The connections, values and ideas formed at Ormond will continue to serve you for a lifetime.

Moving from rural South Australia to inner-city Melbourne, the support of Ormond’s Graduate community allowed me to hit the ground running, being warmly welcomed by like-minded, professionally driven individuals. It’s now my turn to pay that hospitality forward and warmly welcome you into our community.

I hope to meet you soon!

Lachlan McAnaney Chair - Ormond College Middle Common Room

“Welcome

Ormond College acknowledges the Traditional Owners of this land, the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation. The Wurundjeri People are the people of the wurun, the river white gum, who have been custodians of this land for thousands of years. We pay our respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders – past, present, and emerging.

With over 65 resident graduate students at Ormond, we have created a genuine community with a distinctive identity. Our graduate precinct is located in our beautiful, park-like campus and offers different configurations of accommodation in our heritage houses, architecturally-designed apartments with views over the city and our new Graduate Centre.

Iconic Dining Hall

One of the greatest features of Ormond life and the heart of the College is our Dining Hall. It’s a place for great conversations, meeting new people and delicious healthy meals. Graduates enjoy freshly prepared meals from our servery, with the choice of 21 or 7 meals per week. We cater for many dietary requirements, including gluten-free, dairyfree, vegetarian and vegan. Formal Hall, a time-honoured twice-weekly tradition brings the community together to share a meal, listen to thought provoking speakers and celebrate community achievements.

AccommodationGraduate students live in graduate-specific accommodation in a number of areas of the College. The accommodation concept for most graduates is a personal study and rest space adjoining a communal living area. A typical living space features a lounge, dining, kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities shared between 3 – 6 graduates.

A contemporary learning hub

The Academic Centre is the heart of learning at Ormond and available exclusively for Ormond students. The Centre features state-of-the-art information access, quiet study spaces and a 24-hour access library with the books you need for the courses you’re doing. Our librarians are on hand to help you access and understand the University’s research databases.

Stay fit & focused with on-campus facilities

The College maintains a well-equipped Gym – included in your Middle Common Room (MCR) membership. The equipment includes ergos (rowing machines), free weights, treadmills, exercise bikes, pectoral fly machine and more. A tennis and basketball court is also set atop a stunning rooftop space. There are many public and University facilities within walking distance – such as the University Aquatic Centre, the University Oval, and Princes Park.

Sports and movement

Sport brings the College together, whether it’s as part of a team or part of the supporting crowd. Ormond fields at least one team in every intercollegiate sport including athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rowing, rugby, soccer, softball, squash, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, and cross country. Students also run an annual Ski Week held at the Ormond Ski Lodge at Mt Hotham.

Wellbeing

Balancing the rigorous demands of graduate study and life can be challenging for anyone. That’s why we have dedicated highly-skilled psychologists and counsellors you can connect with. We also run a wide range of community wellbeing events to help students maintain focus and balance. These include yoga, meditation, boxing classes and other community activities.

Social spaces

The Middle Common Room (MCR) is a heritage space that provides a great environment for our graduates to socialise and relax. A cafe serves coffee and light snacks during the day and in the evening transforms into a relaxed bar and performance area for mic nights and live entertainment. Alongside the cafe, is a multi-purpose Games Room with comfortable lounges and ottomans that double as game-boards. Next to this sits a full-sized billiards table that’s home of the annual Ormond billiards championships. Our central Quad is a social space where we host social nights and it’s also a great place to have a meal or study in the sun.

auOrmond’s Learning Program allows graduate students to excel in their studies, develop their professional skills, explore ideas and skills outside their studies and network with leading alumni in their field. Our offerings change each year, as we work in partnership with students to pursue their passions and interests.

All graduate students, including research students, can request academic assistance from the College, which might include tutorials, consultations, or guest speakers. As students are studying a variety of highly specific graduate degrees, in most cases such assistance is tailored to the individual student’s needs.

Learning program

Ormond College tutors are highly skilled, and quality teaching and learning is at the centre of the Ormond Learning Program. Our students achieve excellent results because we understand that the best learning is personal.

Our tutors and fellows who teach in the Ormond Learning Program are closely involved in the life of the College. They support you with teaching and mentoring, and provide an experienced perspective on learning and community living.

Mentoring

Our mentoring program connects graduate students with alumni volunteers, matched by field of study or industry. Experienced mentors share insights into career pathways, professional directions and offer helpful support and advice over coffee or dinner.

World of work

Ormond students are offered in-house training in work readiness skills including CV preparation and interview techniques. As well as guest speakers and workplace visits that expand their knowledge of career pathways and give them an opportunity to network and connect with Ormond alumni.

Associate Ormond College (AOC)

The AOC is a bespoke learning program available exclusively for our students at no extra cost. You’ll get a toolkit of enterprise skills including design thinking, ethical reasoning and effective communication to complement your university studies and prepare you for the changing future of work.

Wade Institute of Entrepreneurship

Wade Institute is a leading centre for entrepreneurial training located at Ormond College. Established in 2015 thanks to a generous gift from entrepreneur Peter Wade, the Institute delivers a range of immersive education programs, including the University of Melbourne’s Master of Entrepreneurship. There are many ways graduate students can get involved at Wade and participate in Melbourne’s thriving startup ecosystem.

Applying to Ormond

Ormond College welcomes applications from local and international students at the University of Melbourne, the Victorian College of the Arts and Melbourne Business School.

We select students based on their ability to get the most out of the all-round educational experience provided by the College. Therefore we look at your co-curricular interests, leadership potential and ability, as well as your academic results. The interview process enables you to talk about what you have done, what you value, and what you want to do with the opportunities that come from being at Ormond.

You don’t have to wait until you have received an offer from the University of Melbourne to apply to Ormond, actually, the earlier you get your application in the better. This will give you plenty of time to organise your supporting documents and attend an interview.

Financial Assistance

To support the College’s value of diversity, we are committed to ensuring that financial need is not an obstacle to membership of the College.

Thanks to alumni and other benefactors, Ormond’s endowment funds enable us to offer generous assistance to students who, for reasons of financial need, would not otherwise be able to enter or remain in College.

More than half of our graduate students receive some form of financial assistance. If you would like to attend Ormond, but feel that financial need may be a problem, you should apply. The financial assistance application form is available online. We recommend applying at the same time as you apply for college.
