AcademicRequirementsBoththeDepartmentandtheUniversitydefinethemajorrequirementsforeachstageofstudy.Thefirstyearoftheprogramisgearedtowardsgivingstudentsatheoreticalfoundationsothattheymaybegintoformulateideasforaresearchproject.Allgraduatestudentsareexpectedtobeinresidence(oncampus)duringtheirfirstyearintheprogram.Attheendofthefirstyear,studentswillsubmitaportfolioofsubstantiveworktotheirPreliminaryCommittee(seepage11).ResidencyRequirementInaccordancewithSenateRegulation686,theminimumresidencerequirementforthePh.D.degreeissixterms,threeofwhichmustbespentinresidenceattheUniversityofCalifornia,SantaCruzcampus.Residenceisestablishedbythesatisfactorycompletionofonecourseperterm.GoodAcademicStandingandProbationAdulyregisteredgraduatestudentisconsideredtobeingoodstandingsolongasthestudent'sdepartmentdeterminesthatheorsheismakingsatisfactoryprogresstowardaterminaldegree.Thedepartmentandthegraduatedeanreviewtheacademicprogressofeachcontinuinggraduatestudentannually.
IftheAnthropologyDepartmentdeemsastudent'sworkunsatisfactory,heorshemaybeplacedonprobation.Astudentwhoseacademicprogresshasbeenfoundunsatisfactoryintwosuccessiveannualreviewswillbesubjecttodismissalfromtheuniversity.
