A Tactical Guide to Social Hacking tactics are the modes of creative opportunity that operate with in the gaps and slips of conven-tional thought and the patterns of everyday life. (LTL, Situation Normal.)This thesis project considers hacking as an approach to architecture, and contends that hacking is a tactical action. Hacking is posi-tioned as a tactical response deployed in an ever-changing terrain. With no obligatory medium, typology or code, the hack adapts to meet changing conditions through small-scale actions. The hacker innovates through a per-ceptive understanding of the existing systems; as a bottom up action, hacking originates in the constraints of the system, but can maneuver independent of its control.

Social Hacking: The Hacker EthosTo qualify as a hack, the feat must be imbued with innovation, style and technical virtuos-ity.1

The nature of hacking is embedded in the vir-tual, in an idea. The hacker has received a negative connotation in recent years, mainly due to a misunderstanding over the nature of hacking. Hacking should not be limited to

IN SOME CASES CHARACTERS USE SIMILAR TECHNIQUES, BUT

EACH TO GAIN A DIFFERENT RESULT.

INTERACT, JUST AS IN A REAL COMMUNITY

A CRITICAL ARCHITECTURE NEED NOT RELY ON THE ERASURE OF

FAMILIARITY. ON THE CONTRARY, IT COULD USE FAMILIARITY TO

EARN ITS WELCOME INTO THE STATUS QUO AND THEN TURN IT

INSIDIOUS. PERHAPS A DISSIDENT ARCHITECTURE TODAY COULD

BE THOUGHT OF AS AN ARCHITECTURE OF ENTRAPMENT, CHARAC-

TERIZED BY STEALTH. IT COULD ACT ON CONSTRUCTED BODIES

AND SPACE ALIKE, DEFORMING THE RULES IT UNDERSTANDS TOO

WELL.

The essence of this process is best understood as abstraction and a process of working with the existing3 4; generative while informing the existing. A hack is both the conceived process and the resulting abstraction, so to appreciate or evaluate the process, we must also understand the host system and its potential for exploitation. Perhaps this is less challenging when the hacking occurs in the confines of the cyber realm, however, we must question, what does it mean to hack architecture? Can architecture be equally a tangible object, an idea, and a component of a cultural system?

Suburbia: The gated community The architecture of suburbia is by design, an outward symbolism of a socio-cultural systems, manipu-lating social desires, fears and expectations of a culture that strives for segregation and homoge-neity.6 The gated community is the most distilled of this condition, controlling who is allowed to enter, what buildings will look like and even who can live within the community. The middle-class American ideal is being reinvented behind the gates of communities across America, obscuring, if only temporarily, the inherent anxieties and conflicting social values of modern urban and suburban life.7 The architectural symbols of the gated community have social and psychological, as well as physical effects.8 Are our neighborhoods becoming more and more dangerous? Is the fear that, both the traditional urban and suburban neighborhoods are getting worse real? To what end does this fear persist?

A critical architecture could use familiarity to earn its welcome into the status quo and then turn it insidious. Perhaps a dissident architecture today could be thought of as an architecture of entrapment, act[ing] on constructed bodies and space alike, deforming the rules it understands too well.9 Diller + Scofidio, FLESH

Social Hacking: DisruptionSuburban culture is designed to limit and control and when attempted explicit resistance has consistently failed. Hacking employs the cloak of the normative and familiar to engage with a cultural system it wishes to overthrow. It is the ultimate expression of a difference in the system that is the hack.11 Does this becomes an architecture that we in truth can never occupy, embedded in the system that created it?12 Hacking is responsive to a system, it can not predict or prescribe outcomes (the product of what is abstracted), rather, the process is the structure of the hack that is produced.13 Hacking is both the creative process and a product.14

Social Hacking: Suburban CultureSuburban architecture is tied to the economic, social and cultural forces that produce it; a pervasive system that exists and thrives on homogeneity, failing to examine or act critically in response to its surroundings. The suburban architecture of the gated community has succumbed to a social and environmental paranoia that upholds the pure, the homogenized, the familiar.16 Where the fear of the household germ and dirt initiated a moral construct, yielding sexual, religious and aesthetic distinctions17, the false fear of increasing crime and invading cultural and social groups is having a similar effect on this era of housing and their communities. Understanding the motivations and fear of this culture, its social structure and what perpetu-ates that is essential for a dissident architecture to be possible. Each hack is dependant on the objective that is being exploited; the context of the system must be understood for its potential to be hacked and the resulting abstraction.

Social Hacking: ProcessThe measure of difference in the gated community can occur at neurotic scales. Neighbors mow their grass along lot lines with precision and landscaping is dictated with legal documents and enforced with impunity. Conformity is ensured by legal contract, superseding the social contract of a community. Typically any choice exacted on the houses of these communities occurs from within.

A hierarchy of boundaries exaggerate normal property rights in a gated community, Fences, hedges, and walls enforce one of the basic rights of property-the right to exclude others.19 In the gated community the lack of control of physical boundary leaves the building enve-lope as socially more vulnerable. What goes on inside the house is less buffered, exposing the inhabitants to an increased risk of social estrangement. The relationships of perimeter to envelope are the basis for a series of social codes that define the nature of a community. By understanding both the legal and social covenants of the community, it is these codes that are to be hacked.

previously I lived in a city apartment, I could get where I

needed to, and, walk where I needed to go

in front of every house is a sidewalk, smooth, edged, pristine....

All sidewalks lead to the Front gate, but that is nearly a mile out of my way, on what would be a

short walk to work

But where they lead, leaves question to just what purpose they serve...

We bought our house here because the neighborhoods location

close to my work and kids schools

an extra car seems frivolousThe idea of walking

to work appealed to me...

but i couldnt get over how far out of my way

I went

once i am over the last community wall it is free

sailing...well except for the 8 lane highway

I decided to explore other routes

I realized the fastest way to the road was through a marshy area, but I could also cut

through the neighborhood

Just scaling the wall didnt seem the way....

in the end though I would need to get over the wall

it is by breaking down the homogenous

structure of a gated community that we can create a brand, and

ultimately more density

if we define the community in a series of bands, the most private

houses would also be the largest, pushed to the inside of

the community.

the thing with the ipod is that you don't get a lesser product per

se, but you do have to give something up....space

the same principle would apply to a community, with similar scales of

products, a shift from multi family to single family

The ability to create multiple entry points within one brand,

allows for an expanded customer base, but with a single identity

Before long a whole family of products existed,

allowing more people to be part of the ipod community

the apartments would act as a buffer to the community, but could also be mixed with

amenities on the ground floor, attracting commercial rents

Lets look at Apple for a product example....the ipod to be specific...

First there was just one ipod, one price, you had it or you didn't.
