University of Houston-Clear Lake Office of Institutional Effectiveness Graduating Student Survey Spring 2017 Summary

The purpose of the Graduating Student Survey is to determine the level of satisfaction of graduating students concerning their recent higher education experience at University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL). The graduating student’s opinions are solicited regarding which areas or issues should be improved to ensure that UHCL maintains the highest quality of instruction. The percentage of students who would recommend UHCL to family or friends is included in the UHCL progress card each year and is shown on the next page.

The online Graduating Student Survey is conducted in fall and spring semesters using Qualtrics survey software. UHCL launched its semi-annual survey to graduating students for the Spring 2017 on February 27, 2017 and the survey was active through May 14, 2017. All students who applied for graduation during the spring 2017 semester were sent an invitation to complete the survey. The data can be divided by college, by degree level, by gender, by ethnicity, by program or any of the above combinations. The average completion time for the survey is 10 minutes. A short summary of data collected in the Graduating Student Survey Spring 2017 by UHCL and by individual schools is contained in the following pages.

The final reports are posted online at https://www.uhcl.edu/about/administrative-offices/institutional-effectiveness/institutional-research/survey-data.aspx

under Graduating Student Survey.

Staff and Faculty is very friendly and accesible to help student achieve their goals. Even though professor challenge their student, they still provide all thematerials and information necessary to overcome those challenges.

Even though there are a lot of organizations, I would like to attend a school with more tradition and where the student body has a sense of school spirit/pride.

I would plan based on my work location.

It is a good university and I feel like I received experiences that will be useful in my career

My professors and the courses I took at UHCL helped prepare me for the MCAT (Medical College Acceptance Test) and the research opportunities I have beengiven have helped expand my experience and knowledge in pre-clinical research

I was looking for in-person classes, including labs, that was affordable and close to where I lived without sacrificing quality. UHCL met these requirements.

No job lined up.

NA.

Graduate school is very expensive, especially for an out-of-state student like myself. Perhaps if done differently, then I would attempt to apply directly to Ph.D.programs or look at more competitive M.S. programs. But overall I enjoyed my time and greatly appreciate the opportunities that I was afforded here - thankyou!!

There are few courses like scientific writing which were not price worthy. Future career information or career planning was not at all effective. Didn't pay attentionon giving awareness about career path in that field.

My program had very limited resources and did not allow for enough critical thinking and independent work to properly prepare me for the current job market.Faculty could not help with career placement since none had experience other than academia.

Not a lot of college type experiences here

friendly atmosphere

While there were some classes I would consider beneficial, there were many that served no purpose and had no clear course goals.

UHCL isn't the most prestigious college, but it does provide access to a lot of professionals (namely NASA employees) that I felt had relevant experience for mydegree. It was also in a convenient location for me. The recent reduction in even classes would make it nearly impossible to attend the classes required for mydegree. In order to attend UHCL for my degree now I would either have to switch to a night job or quit working altogether.

I have learn a lot and I think is a program very versatile.

NA.

NNA

I would go into education right away.

Molecular Biotechnology is an excellent course of study for learning practical biological techniques that can applied in many research labs.

This program is more focused on project planning, organizing and technology planning or management related courses. This program should have someinformation technology related courses which will help in future jobs like oracle, data base related or some cloud technologies. That will give mixed knowledge ondifferent platforms.

I like learning new things, rather than same thing over

I would probably choose a different area to study if I had the choice to do it over again.

I love environmental science

The distinction between a BS in IT and a BAS in IT is confusing, there really should only be one or the other.

Physics is what I wanted to study in the first place, and I am very happy with the curriculum provided for that degree.

Faculty is very helpful and the community is very aware and wants you to succeed.I hav already recommended my brother and few friends. It's a great place for first timers to explore world and also get exposure to various cultures. They have a good masters programI already have recommended UHCL to my younger cousinsDepending on their overall goals and situation.Pretty easy to earn a Master's degree.NANA.It has a fair range of options as far as studies and programs, and it is relatively affordable, but consider all possibilities before committing to anything.I will refer but not to suggest them to go with particular program. MIS and computer science are more helpful courses for IT field interested. Based on technicaleducation and quality.I don't feel as though I got much out of my tuition. Paying out of state for a mediocre education was disappointing. I would not want friends to experience it.There is also not a strong sense of community as I had at my undergrad school as most students come to class and then go home. My classes were also a bitisolating due to the majority of my classmates being international students that would not speak english in laboratory classes, which made group workimpossible.Good prices and low class numbersWhat I've seen of other STEM related degrees compares to the quality of my degree, so I would happily recommend any STEM related degree program atUHCL. I can't attest to other programs.

Text EntryOnline courses should cost less than classroom classes. I'm paying to teach myself. All graduate students should have the option to opt out of things like healthand fitness fees. Same thing for undergrad students at half-time or less.NA.No Diversity in Master's Degree program Delta is very far from other buildings, so its hard to connect with people Shuttle service should be improvedNAThanks for the memories! This university is very less focused on sports or sport events. No proper infrastructure for tennis or any other games. at least failed to provide some drinkingwater facility at tennis courts or basket ball courts. And least worried on career help. The fees per subject is very high for an international studentKeep classes small. Keep emphasizing education and hiring/rewarding faculty that put educating as a priority. This is a major strength of UHCL. I could tell all ofmy professors were keenly interested and cared about me learning the material.I came to UHCL in large part because they were marketed as a school for working students - those that have to work part/full time while attending classes. WhenI started attending classes in 2010 I found that to be mostly true with a good offering of classes falling after normal work hours (i.e. the 5:30-7 and 7-10pmclasses). However, over the past 7 years there has been a steady move toward daytime classes. This has made it increasingly difficult to attend classes withoutaffecting my professional development.
