Bethany Gilmer of Ran-burne High School was among only 10 high school students statewide to be awarded the prestigious scholarship awards for 2009 by the Smith Scholar-ship Foundation.
Each of the 2009 scholars is the first in his or her family to attend college.
The foundation was en-dowed in honor of her parents by Alabama journalist/heiress, Mignon C. Smith.
The Smith Foundation scholarships go to Alabama high school seniors to attend qualified Alabama colleges of
their choice, always subject to Smith Scholarship Foundation guidelines.
A minimum C+ grade aver-age and community volunteer work or special family respon-sibility is also required.
Scholars must maintain a minimum grade of C+ to con-tinue the four year scholarship. The value of each scholarship is approximately $15,000 an-nually.
Each student has a mentor, a counselor and has workshops that teach how to interview, etiquette classes and how to dress appropriately for busi-
ness. This is the fourth class of
Smith Scholarship Foundation scholars The fourthclass of Smith Scholarship Foundation had 550 applicants, and all but three counties had applicants.
Nearly 70 Smith Foundation scholarships have been award-ed to Alabama high school se-niors by the Smith Foundation since the start of the program four years ago. State Superin-tendent of Education Joseph Morton cited the Smith Foun-dation scholarships as the larg-est endowment made to public schools in Alabama history.

On-line Christian school option for Heflin-area studentsAmerica's newest high
school is being built without the assistance of a single ar-chitect, engineer or contractor.
That's because when St. Mark's Academy opens this fall, it will be completely on-line.
"St. Mark's Academy pro-vides an alternative for those middle and high school stu-dents whose needs are not be-ing met in a traditional school setting," said Jamie Osborne,
the school's headmaster. "Our educational model is designed to provide a learning option that maximizes flexibility and personalization, without sacri-ficing academic quality."
A key feature of the school is 24/7 on-demand access to e-instructors, said Osborne. These content-area experts - most of whom are Masters or Ph.D.-level educators - are just a mouse click away.
In addition, St. Mark's digi-
tal curriculum offers a range of solutions to support stu-dents, from pre-high school Foundations level courses through college-level Ad-vanced Placement.
A series of virtual informa-tion sessions for parents and students is currently being planned, Osborne noted.
For more information, visit the school's website at www.stmarksacademy.net or phone 1-866-296-3140.

Alexis M i l e s was the first prize winner of a writing competi-tion held
by Jackson-ville State University and memorializing the Holo-caust.
Her fictional piece in
the “2009 Imagining the Holocaust” netted her a $100 Savings Bond and the opportunity to pres-ent her story at the An-nual Holocaust Memorial Commemoration.
JSU developed the contest to focus on the importance of the Holo-caust history and what it can teach us of the past, and enlighten us about
our present. By learning about the rationalizations, prejudices, and stereo-types that made possible the deaths of millions of people between 1933 and 1945 in Europe, students are better able to recog-nize and think through the prejudices of their own societies and to de-velop tolerance to those who might be different
than they are.Alexis is the daughter
