Iwould like to extend a warmwelcome to all those attending
the 2008 Association of BritishDispensing Opticians Graduationand Prizegiving Ceremony.This brochure will not only bedistributed at the event, but willalso be enclosed as a supplementwith the December issue of the
Association’s journal Dispensing Optics. I hope that itwill provide readers with a valuable insight into whathas become a major event in the annual ABDOprogramme of activities. This is a very important andspecial occasion for everyone who attends, as itenables us to congratulate the graduands and otheraward recipients on their achievements.
Graduation is just the starting point in what I trust willprove to be a long and successful career for the 2008graduands in their chosen field. For the dispensingprofession to grow and develop further, it needsdedicated individuals to enable it to move forwardand I am confident that the new graduates will playa vitally important role.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend mysincere congratulations to everyone receiving anaward at this year’s ceremony, and hope thateveryone who attends has an enjoyable andmemorable day in the magnificent splendour ofCanterbury Cathedral.

About the AssociationThe ABDO was formed in 1986 when its twopredecessors, The Association of Dispensing Opticiansand the Faculty of Dispensing Opticians, were mergedfollowing the Health and Social Security Act of 1984.The profession of dispensing opticians has beenregulated voluntarily since 1926 and, as a statutoryprofession, by the Opticians Act since 1958. Since suchtime the conduct of Dispensing Opticians has thusbeen regulated partly by legal provisions, by advicegiven by the General Optical Council, and by ABDO’sown Advice to Fellows.
The ABDO currently represents over 5,300 qualifieddispensing opticians in the United Kingdom, 200
overseas, some 2,000 students worldwide, and over400 Associate members.
The objects of the Association are:• To support, protect and advance the character,
status and interests of Dispensing Opticians.
• The advancement, for the benefit of the public, ofthe science and art of dispensing optics andpromotion of research into such science and art,provided that the useful results of any such researchis disseminated for public benefit.
• In furtherance of such objects ABDO has, amongothers, the following powers:
• to promote the better education and training ofDispensing Opticians,
• to encourage the study, and improve thepractice, of dispensing optics
• to encourage suitable standards of education indispensing optics, and to establish, continue andadjudicate a system of qualifying and higherexaminations.
• to enter into any arrangements with any authoritiesthat may seem conducive to the interests of ABDO.
• to disseminate among Members and others,information on all matters affecting dispensingoptics, and publish written material as appropriate.
• to give the legislative, public bodies and others,facilities of conferring with, and ascertaining theviews of, persons engaged in the opticaldispensing profession.
A short history of Canterbury CathedralThe Cathedral, with St Augustine’s Abbey and StMartin’s Church, forms part of the UNESCO worldheritage site. The Cathedral Church was founded in597 AD by St Augustine, the first Archbishop ofCanterbury, whose original cathedral lies beneath thefloor of the nave. The original Saxon church wasdestroyed by fire in 1067 and rebuilt again by theNormans in 1070. Although successive generationshave made additions to the fabric of the building,parts of the quire and some of the ancient stainedglass windows date from the 12th century.The Cathedral became a place of pilgrimage in theMiddle Ages, when Geoffrey Chaucer wrote hisfamous Canterbury Tales, recording the life and times

of a group of pilgrims on their way to the shrine ofArchbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket, who wasmurdered in 1170. The north west transept is the site ofthe martyrdom and here, in 1982, Pope John Paul IIand the Archbishop of Canterbury Robert Runcieprayed together. A plaque commemorates this historicoccasion.
Originally the tomb of King Henry IV and his wife Joanof Navarre flanked one side of the shrine of St ThomasBecket, while the tomb of Edward, the Black Princeflanked the other. Both these tombs may be seentoday, although the shrine of St Thomas wasdismantled during the reign of King Henry VIII. Behindthis is the corona chapel, which is dedicated tomodern martyrs
Order of proceedingsGuests are requested to take their seats as directedbefore the entry of the Graduands; they should remainseated whilst the Graduands enter, and stand onlywhen the Procession begins.
Preceded by a Marshal, the Graduands will enter theCathedral. (As the students enter they are called“graduands”, since it is not until their award has beenconferred that they become “graduates”). TheGraduands will take their seats before the start of theCeremony, which is heralded by the entry of theProcession.
There will be a welcoming speech, followed by a talkby the Master of the Worshipful Company of SpectacleMakers, and an address by the ABDO President, afterwhich the conferral of awards and prizes willcommence.
The exit of the Procession marks the end of theceremony. Graduates and guests are asked to remainstanding until the Procession has left the Cathedral.Guests are requested to kindly move to the back of theCathedral whilst the Graduates assemble for a groupphotograph.
Please note that the Cathedral’s regulationsspecifically prohibit photography within the building,and the ushers have the authority to request anyoneabout to disregard this to desist.
