Generations of Families agree:Grady-Whites make long lasting memories

This summer was a time of reflection for several Grady-White boat owners who were inspired to write in about the pleas-

ant memories that surfaced while enjoying time on the water with children and grandchildren. There is something about

“messing about” in boats…new and classic. Hearing about these good feelings is such a pleasure, we just have to share!

“I saw an amazing thing today, ” John Sbrana of Vineland, NJ, wrote in to [email protected]. “My son was at the helm of our much-loved Sailfish 272, showing my nine-year-old grandson the right way to pilot the boat. It seems like only yesterday I was teaching him the rules of the road, keeping a sharp forward outlook and operating the vessel at safe speed for conditions. I started taking my boy boating and fishing when he was five

years old, and he told me recently that he has no childhood memo-ries that do not include our summers on the back bays and ocean.”

Mr. Sbrana is in good com-pany. Grady-White CEO Eddie Smith received an e-mail from John D. Tickle of Virginia, who had recently taken delivery of a

Fisherman 230, and was sending pictures of a successful fish-ing adventure with his grandson. “It seems like yesterday when I was eight years old and fishing with my dad on the

banks of South Holston Lake in Bristol, TN. Now I am fish-ing with my eight-year-old grandson, Jack, on my new Grady-White. It’s a dream come true.”

Owners of classic Gradys are as enthusiastic. “I’ve owned a 1988 Fisherman 249 since 1999,” writes Robert Schlicting from Aston, PA. “Grady-White has been a family tradition. My

always felt that Grady-White struck a perfect balance between hardcore fish-ing machine and family fishing boat.”

The day a Grady arrives in the fami-ly is one not to be forgotten. People get very attached to their boats. “Owning a Grady was a stretch of my imagina-tion,” wrote Jean Geronimo. “We’d sold our old boat and initially my son

was not happy about that. He went to his room and cried. I sat on his bed and explained that now is the time to make new memories with the new boat. Now he is going on 18, and how he loves our Sailfish!”

John Sbrana continued, “This is our third Grady. I find myself quite humbled seeing the tradition continue in my family. Thank you Grady-White

for making a boat that has always brought us back safe and sound, ready to enjoy another day.”

Today is a great day to make a Grady-White part of your own family’s stories. “From the moment I ordered

my new Grady, my experience was nothing but awesome,” wrote John Tickle. “Owning a Grady-White is the ultimate experience.”

The 15th annual tri-State marine Tournament and family Day took place august 7, in Deale, mD. Several Grady-White Club captains and their crews took part in the tournament, and then enjoyed the hospitality at Tri-State's showroom where goody bags were wait-ing. Those for children included fishing rods and reels, lures and GW hats,

assured a great tournament. The fes-tivities’ theme was Prom Night, and Marlin 300 owners John and Kay Baez were named king and queen. around 300 people enjoyed the recipe favor-ites brought by the participants to accompany burgers and hot dogs, and Phantom Diner awards went to Wendy Pratt, Kay Baez and Nancy mirtle.

while adults received GW shirts and hats. following the weigh-in, food and drink were provided in abun-dance and there were boating related activities for the kids. Beautiful weather added to the plea-sure and comfort of both segments of the day. Before the winners were announced, all the fishing children were awarded medals. although a stiff breeze and hard-running tide contributed to the challenge, club members and their crews were suc-cessful in many categories, up to and including the largest fish overall, a 27.5" rockfish, caught by one of Keith Kaler’s young crew members.Keith Kaler’s (front right) crew brought in the biggest fish during the tri-StatE marinE tournamEnt and Fam-

Not many 20-foot boats, much less 20-foot center consoles, feature the all-day comfort of an enclosed head area, but the new Grady-White Fisherman 209 is an exception. That is not the only thing in this chocked-with-customer-inspired-features boat that’s exceptional; this great family-and-fishing Grady-White doesn’t miss an opportunity, big or small, to add features and function for a fun day on the water. Highlights include a cockpit that is every bit as big as most 25-footers, a clever removable cooler that doubles as forward seating, and a handsome, well-engineered optional T-top integrated into the con-sole structure. Little things make a difference, too, like a recessed spot on top of the console to store your sunglasses when you dive over for a swim.

The Fisherman 209 is designed to be powered by a single Yamaha four stroke engine, and the super-efficient new gener-ation 200 or 250 HP Yamaha is a great match for this boat. Combine this power with Grady-White’s exclusive SeaV2® hull and you have a wonderful, safe and solid ride at almost any speed and condition.

For a 20-foot boat, the head area is surpris-ingly roomy. This enclosed console features a dome light, handhold, a mirror on the door, and good storage space. Equip it with an optional portable head and you’re ready for an all-day outing.

The bow area features two 88-quart insu-lated fish boxes that double as seating. Access forward is at one level all the way to the bow, which is helpful when fishing or anchoring. An optional insert changes the whole bow to a roomy casting or sunning platform.

The helm area pedestal seats are standard, but many will opt for the deluxe helm lean bar with comfortable backrest, flip up bolster, cushioned seating and footrests, plus rod and

tackle storage. The easy-to-view flush mount electronics area has room for almost any electronics wish list, and the acrylic windshield provides excellent visibility and protection. Customers will also opt for the T-top complete with radio box, dome light, storage net, spreader light and four rod holders.

Aft, the Fisherman 209 has a fold down motorwell dam, allowing quick access to the stern. Two comfortable aft seats with cushioned backs are on either side of the motorwell.

Ask your dealer about the Fisherman 209, a winning inshore sportfishing boat that’s great for family days at the coast.

the Grady life: owners’ Clubs Here are highlights from recent Grady owners’ clubs events and outings. If you have Grady club information to share or are interested in information about Grady clubs in your

area, e-mail [email protected]. Go to www.gradywhite.com for links to club websites.

The Chesapeake bay Grady-White Club, sponsored by Tri-State Marine, shrugged off small craft advisories in early June and resourcefully recast their annual Grady Ladies tournament (now known as the Sharon Finn Memorial Tournament) into an inside “fish off ” with magnetic lures catching simulated species, resulting in Mallory Zolyan being named Queen of the Bay. The fol-lowing weekend, lucky anglers out of Ocean City provided tuna for the club’s Steak and Shrimp Feast. August saw club members compete in Tri-State’s Fishing Tournament and Family Day, and then came Grady Palooza III, this year at Knapps Narrows Marina, MD. Fourteen Gradys ranging from 22' to 33' lined the floating dock, and more members took rooms in the nearby inn. A Friday dock party encouraged visiting from boat to boat, and Saturday’s afternoon pool and games party was followed by a big Palooza dinner. Thanks to Donna Kaler for terrific planning!

The northwest Grady-White Club began May with a gathering in Poulsbo, WA, for a fishing weekend planned by Bob and Robbin Bond. Twelve Gradys headed out in search of the elusive Pacific spotted shrimp; thanks to Rob and Vickie Powers along with son, Blake, the group found a pro-ductive hideaway and brought in over 400 of the tasty crustaceans for an afternoon cookout. Others tried their luck with ling cod but would have been more successful shopping! At the end

of the month the club got together at Roche Harbor, WA, on the north end of San Juan Island. Vice Commodore Rob Powers and wife, Vicki, made the arrangements for the group of 68 and the fleet of 22 Gradys. Highlights included a ling cod tournament, won by Fred and Mark Tsang, and a clam bake. Club sponsor Jacobsen’s Marine in Seattle and Grady-White provided inflatable life jackets, hats and t-shirts in goodie bags.

The Somers Point Grady-White Club held its Second Annual AC for Lunch Bunch run from sponsor Somers Point Marina, NJ, up to Atlantic City. Sunny skies and a calm ocean greeted the fleet of five boats that made the run. “Much better than last year, when we had about a quarter-mile visibility in fog and cool weather,” said President Lou Meier. “The kids enjoyed seeing the casinos from off shore and stopping to fish on the return run. Each year we get more and more members and guests participating.”

The tampa bay Grady-White Club had an awesome time during their Ninth Annual Family Adventure in Steinhatchee, FL, at the Sea Hag Marina. The group of 111 spent every beautiful day on the Gulf gathering scallops. The fleet would stream out to sea about 9 A.M. each morning, going up to 12 miles or so up and down the coastline to find a fertile area and then would anchor, don masks-

thE northWESt Grady-WhitE Club event at roche Harbor, Washington’s San Juan Island, saw 22 boats with 68 people enjoying an unforgettable weekend.

Grady Palooza III was a resounding success for the ChESaPEaKE bay Grady-WhitE Club. fourteen Gradys’ crews were joined by others arriving by land for this fun-filled weekend at Knapps Narrows marina, mD.

Brittany and Kristin, granddaughters of tamPa bay Grady-WhitE Club members Bill and Judy Eckerle, dove for scallops during the Steinhatchee family adventure weekend.

thE Grady bunCh out of florida’s Vero marine Center had a fleet of 10 Grady-Whites with 38 participants for their annual Bahamas cruise. Does the Bunch have fun or what?!

thE SouthEaStErn marinErS cruised to Port of Urbanna, Va, on the Chesapeake, and enjoyed dining and fellowship at the port’s restaurant. This group is sponsored by Southeastern marine, richmond, Va.

thE tidEWatEr Grady-WhitE Club gathered at Smithfield Station in Virginia for their second annual James river Cruise.

The tidewater Grady-White Club held its second annual James River Cruise on June 12 with an overnight stay at Smithfield Station on the Pagan River. Seven boats from various ports around Hampton Roads, VA, made the trip together. Members gathered on the deck for a cookout and were joined by other guests from sponsor Norfolk Marine. In all about 25 people enjoyed socializing, swimming and shopping. The evening was full of delicious food, refreshing drinks and story telling, and the party moved to the boardwalk where folks tried to sing along to songs they thought they knew until mid-night. On Sunday, some explored the new nature park nearby. This has become the favorite club event on the calendar.

snorkels-fins and jump in! After har-vesting their limits, some would circle up their boats for visiting, swimming and tossing footballs until the late afternoon return to the marina. Back packs of Grady gear, barbecue dinners and potluck cookouts, and of course the scallops were enjoyed by all. This club is sponsored by Quality Boats of Clearwater, Florida.

The tarpon Coast Grady-White boats Club out of Port Charlotte, FL, is always on the go. This summer’s activities included a Memorial Day picnic at the Don Pedro Island state park, and a trip to Homosassa, FL, where they encoun-tered the Tampa Bay Grady White Club. In July a group of members fished out of Marathon Key off Ron Bembry’s Sailfish 282, Irish Lady. The club is sponsored by Ingman Marine.

2010 Summer boat tripDear Anchorline:Each summer my wife and I and our two boys take a one-week boat trip on our 2003 Express 330. This year we left our homeport of Somers Point, NJ, and traveled to Jamestown, RI. We went up the Jersey Coast, into New York Harbor, up the East River, traversed Long Island Sound, and pulled into Naragansett Bay–just over 250 miles completed in two days. A week later we simply reversed course and arrived home well rested. Here’s a photo taken from a beautiful beach on the North Shore of Long Island were we had an impromptu picnic. Our boat rarely rests all summer. Whether it is long cruises, short day trips or running offshore to the Canyons for tuna, our Grady never disappoints.

Wow. What pleasure all of us here at the plant get from reading cus-tomer notes about the multi-gener-ation memories their families have made aboard their Grady-Whites. All the hard work we’ve put into the 26 models featured in our new model year 2011 line of Gradys has

been a labor of love, and hearing about the great times you have on your boats makes our day! Seeing your pictures, and following the news about club and dealer events, give us lots of pride and satisfac-tion. Your happy times on the water are in large part made possible by our fantastic Grady-White dealerships, and we recently recog-nized many of these fine folks–often second and third generation business owners–at our annual dealer conference.
