Monster Monk – By Matt Fotia

Woori Yallock ruckman Zac Monkhorst is continuing to grow in confidence as the 2019 AFL Outer East Premier Division season rolls on, after his Tiger side grabbed their sixth win of the season on Saturday defeating Wandin 16.14 (110) to 9.10 (64).

Wandin’s star ruckman - ex-Carlton and Gold Coast Sun - Daniel Gorringe was a late withdrawal from Saturday’s 2018 Grand Final rematch, straining his calf during the warm up, leaving Jordan Spencer and Clinton Johnston to tackle the in form Tiger.

Monkhorst took full advantage of the last minute change of opponent, racking up over 50 hit outs, a number of clearances and three goals, to be named the Tiger’s second best, behind on baller Kane Thompson.

Monkhorst is enjoying a breakout year as Woori Yallock’s number one ruckman, with brother Ryley moving to Eastern Football League powerhouse Balwyn this off-season.

The Tiger’s number 20 has kicked 14 goals and had eight appearances in the best players this season - two of which were for best on ground - and says having consistency in his role has been a massive factor in his improvement.

“Last year I spent a little bit of time in the ruck, but I was much more in between roles, but this year has been a lot better, being able to consolidate my position in the ruck.”

Monkhorst has a fair on ball brigade at his disposal, with names like Hayden Smith, Kane Thompson, Jake Matthews, Jordan Williams and so on running through the middle for the Tigers.

Initially he was slightly reserved in pre-bounce conversations but has begun to come out of his shell.

“In round one I was pretty timid, but as we’ve gone on and I’ve felt a little more confident in my tap-work I’ve become more vocal,

“They ( the on ballers) give it right back though, we hold each other to pretty high standards.”

Ruckwork is in the family of course, with Zac’s father Damian having played 215 AFL games for Collingwood and St Kilda, including the 1990 premiership with the Pies.

The now Hawthorn ruck coach is there to give his son advice when needed.

“Obviously having dad is a great help, it’d be silly not to listen to him,”

“A lot of his advice is about switching up your angles, especially if an opposition ruckman is getting on top of you, make yourself unpredictable.”

Monkhorst has also been a major beneficiary of new Tiger coach Jack Cole’s approach to the game, with the ex - Montmorency, Greensborough and Healesville tacticians focus on conditioning helping Monkhorst find more of the football, and the big sticks.

“Jack’s main focus over the pre-season was a lot of conditioning and putting in the work over pre-season has really helped my game personally,”

“(I’ve been) trying to get more running done and some more leg strength to help me jump again and spread better on the bigger grounds,”

“It’s always good to touch the footy, it keeps opposition ruckman accountable if I’m being used around the ground because they can’t just sit in the hole and be the spare back,”

“And (if they’re worried about me) that frees up space for our forwards to lead into.”

Monster Monk continued

It’s not just Monkhorst who’s enjoying Cole’s approach to the game, with the Tigers relishing the 2016 (Yarra Ranges) Premiership coaches old fashioned ways.

“Everybody loves him.”

“He’s an old fashioned coach who will hit you between the eyes when you need to be told, there is no hesitation from him, but it’s all with

love because he wants you to do better,”

“Everyone’s welcomed him with open arms and he’s been great for all of us so far, especially giving us a perspective of what other people think of Woori Yallock.”

“He’s set some standards, everyone loves him, it’s been great having him here.”

Worksafe Report

AFL VICTORIA MID-SEASON UPDATEOver recent weeks, AFL Victoria has been meeting with all Region Commission Chairs, Region General Manager’s and other stakeholders to discuss a number of challenges facing the sport. Pleasingly, a consistent theme across the state was a willingness for all football stakeholders to work together to address these challenges.

There is no doubt local football holds a special place in this state. We all acknowledge the importance of football clubs to the fabric of communities and the importance communities place on their local club. As traditional football structures are impacted by external factors, our ability to adapt our strategies to deal with these will be critical.

Demographic changes, particularly population decline and an aging of the population in many regional areas are impacting on the availability of participants for local clubs and leagues. The increasing range of recreation pursuits available for young people, and particularly the impact of technology on their leisure time makes engaging and retaining this age group challenging. These factors combined with the ongoing strain on volunteers who are managing clubs in an increasingly complex environment drive the need for us to evolve our approach to supporting country football.

In response to these challenges, AFL Victoria is currently undertaking several initiatives, including:

Benchmarking and Structure ReviewAFL Victoria is currently assessing their progress against the recommendations outlined in the 2011 Review of Football in Country Victoria. The project was discussed at the Country Commission and Leagues conference in March and additional consultations will be undertaken over the next few months. Whilst many of the recommendations outlined in the Peter Jackson review have been implemented, it is recognised that much has changed over time and our structures and levels of support need to evolve with this changing landscape. Although our benchmarking indicates football remains one of the most affordable sports in the state, the project will ensure the most efficient structures are in place to maintain this affordability.

Junior Pathways and TransitionIt is pleasing to see that statewide Auskick registrations are up on year to date figures following the implementation of the refreshed Auskick program in 2018. The next stage is to improve the

transition from Auskick to junior football. The AFL has undertaken significant research on the critical factors in kids transitioning from Auskick to club football. Consultation with Leagues and Commissions will be occurring over the next few months to discuss local strategies to improve transition rates. In addition, we are working with several leagues on youth transition. Many leagues are finding that age group increasingly difficult to engage and retain. Working with these leagues, we are investigating transition rates within this age group, best competition structures to support their retention and transition into senior ranks and other factors impacting on participation choices at this age.

Volunteer Support Whilst we have invested in additional Football Development Managers over the years to work in supporting local clubs, it is clear more needs to be done in this space. The AFL is currently developing an on-line portal aimed specifically at club volunteers to provide easy to access, practical information and support tools, which is expected to launch prior to the 2020 season. Aligned to this is the need for more face to face support and we are examining options for how this can be provided and delivered.

Netball RelationshipFootball and netball have been sports with a close alignment, particularly in country Victoria. Both AFL Victoria and Netball Victoria believe that we can reach even better community outcomes by strengthening the partnership through joint strategies and initiatives to better support our regions, leagues and local clubs.

In an effort to work more closely together, AFL Vic and Netball Vic, with the support of Sport & Recreation Victoria, has recently signed off on a terms of reference for a project that will examine best structure/arrangements to support strong and sustainable football/netball clubs playing in leagues across the state.

Whilst we focus on these important initiatives, we continue to invest in our Football Development Manager workforce, introductory programs in schools, facility planning and projects, coach development and in engaging diverse communities in our game.

AFL Victoria would like to thank you for your ongoing support of country footy and enjoy the game today.

Refresh & Reset– By Matt Fotia

With his side trailing by 26 points at quarter time, coming off three consecutive 50+ point losses, to a side they would most likely be battling against for the wooden spoon, you could of excused first year Belgrave coach Nathan Johns of fearing the worst.

But the ex-Crib Point coach remained confident his side would bounce back, with his side lacking efficiency and the conditions favouring the home side.

“The ground conditions played a huge factor in that (the quarter time score), they were kicking towards the Yarra Junction end of the ground, which turned out to be the scoring end (15 of the 21 goals for the game kicked to that end),”

“We had 11 inside 50’s for three behinds, they’d had 12 or 13 for four goals five, so we had the supply and energy around the contest, we just couldn’t finish,”

“Our end was ankle deep mud around the goal square which didn’t help us either.”

The Magpies season has been a tale of two periods. The first six rounds, in which they punched above their weight and were competitive in every game, losing just one game by more then 33 points, and the next three where they lost by a combined total of 291 points.

Johns believes his group dropped off due to a lack of reward in the first six weeks, along with a lack of discipline when it came to their roles within the side’s new system.

“We’ve got a new system and are still getting to terms with it and we probably got a bit deflated when we didn’t get a couple of extra wins (in those early rounds),”

“Then we had a few individuals that went into self preservation mode and once one person does that, it is like a domino effect, one by one they all do it.”

To address the clear lack of understanding (of the system) amongst his playing group, Johns decided against the usual Tuesday night training schedule, taking the Magpies senior squad inside to go through his system in more detail.

“Last Tuesday we had a night off the track,

we went back over the game plan, with me mapping it out with cones,”

“It was telling for me, because I realised that a number of players, key players at that, who were still unsure of how to set up.”

Johns’ believes Tuesday’s ‘refresher session’ played a huge role in getting the group back on track and working as one big collective unit - a crucial factor in the implementation of his system.

“I think Saturday’s win comes back to Tuesday night, because we had a real understanding of the system (against Warburton Millgrove),”

“You need 18 blokes to execute it, that’s for sure.”

Umpiring News….

With the huge increase in the number of females now playing football, it is very exciting to report that this has also flowed into our umpiring group as we have a record number of female registrations this season which now stands at 22. This equates to 15% of our total registrations that are actively umpiring each weekend. Interest and recruitment has come via school visits, friends, siblings and we have three new goal umpire Mums that have joined to partner their son’s and daughter’s on the boundary, which is fantastic. It is great to see some girls that started on the boundary now moving into the field in the juniors, and combining both disciplines.

This week we profile Taylah Priestley, who joined the group last season and has recruited her sister Georgia into umpiring this season. Taylah umpired the Under 18 grand final last season and is very committed to her umpiring. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for giving us the opportunity to learn more about you.

What school do you attend and what year level?

I am currently attending Highvale Secondary College and I am in Year 11.

Are your subjects directed at a certain occupation?

The subjects I have chosen are English language ,biology, chemistry, p.e, maths methods and 3/4 business management.

The subjects I have chosen aren’t necessarily directed at a certain occupation , but I have chosen subjects like methods and chemistry that will keep my options open if I want to do something to do with science or Medicine at Uni.

What got you into umpiring and do have another part-time job?

My brother, Dylan got me into umpiring. He had been doing it for a few years before me and it looked like it would be a great way to earn some money while keeping fit at the same time. .

I also have another part-time job at Hungry jacks.

Umpiring News….continued

Do you play other sports or how do you like to spend your leisure time?

I don’t actually play any other sports at the moment but I used to play tennis. I am also part of the Australian Air force cadets and I am currently at the rank of Corporal. Cadets have been a great help in developing my confidence and leadership skills.

I spend my leisure time like any other teenager these days, watching Netflix.

What is your favourite ground ?

My favourite ground is Wandin. It’s relatively small and has no major hills or slants.

What is your favourite holiday destination ?

My favourite holiday destination would have to be Lake Nagambie.

What type of music do you like and is there a TV show you never miss ?

I don’t have specific style of music but I love artists like Guy Sebastian and Ed Sheeran .The TV show I would never ever miss would be Home and Away.

Do you have a sporting hero and name two famous people you would like to meet ?

I don’t really have a sporting hero. Two famous people I would love to meet are Zac Efron and Chris Hemsworth.

What area of your umpiring discipline do you think has improved ?

The area that I think I have improved in is definitely my fitness and my throw ins are now becoming a bit more consistent however still need some work.

Is there one thing about umpiring that has surprised you ?

The one thing that had really surprised me is that you may not get much recognition from clubs for doing well but there are a few odd people who are really nice and supportive and who will actually want to get to know you.

Thanks again to Brendan McKenna for the photos of Taylah and Emma Mickle who is our longest serving female umpire.

Have a great day and enjoy the footy and netball.

AFL Outer East Football and Netball12

From the Media Desk – By Matt Fotia

It was another Saturday afternoon of Outer East football action, this one bathed with sunshine rather than torrential rain, as a number of sides made statements in their respective divisions.

Check out three takeaways from the weekend that was in the Football Review.

1. Special Smith

With a 56 point victory over their traditional rivals, Woori Yallock have moved two games clear of fifth placed Cranbourne and three games clear of their vanquished foes and sixth placed Wandin, all but locking up a spot in the finals in the process.

The Tigers day was all about the big names, with a couple of famous names floating around the Tigers home.

The two Monkhorst boys played key roles in the victory. Ben kicked five majors while Zac continued his strong season with three goals, 50 plus hitouts, a number of marks and a few clearances.

Jordan Williams returned from a mid season rendezvous in spectacular physical condition and a lovely tan to boot and was able to add some midfield depth and physical presence, whilst ex St Kilda legend Stephen Milne fulfilled his duties as the star of the show, impressing in the pre game luncheon as a guest speaker, on field with a haul of 4.4 and by all reports in the post game upstairs.

With all the attention drawn to the powerful Monkhorsts, the silky skills of the ex-saint and the glistening tan of Williams, the performance of Hayden Smith drifted under the radar, just like his year to date.

The Tigers number one is one of the key engine room operators in Yellow and Black.

His ferocious attack on the ball, endeavour to bash and crash his way into packs - despite not possessing the biggest frame - is something to be admired and his ability to find pockets of space, whether it be from agile footwork or his big work ethic, is the cherry on top of what is more or less the complete on baller.

Smith, who debuted for the Tigers in 2013, has played all nine games for Woori Yallock this year, kicked three majors and been named in the best

players on seven occasions in 2019 - four of those appearances as the best afield.

The Tigers look ready to launch into yet another finals series, and whilst a fair bit of their success has come from the household names listed above, an even bigger part of it has come from their spirited number one.

2. Two Horse Race

The top two in Division One surged further ahead of the trailing pack on Saturday with a pair of convincing wins.

Monbulk remained undefeated as an Ash Beck five goal haul saw them defeat Officer by 29 points, whilst Pakenham ran out 41 point winners over Doveton with nine goal to five second half the deciding factor at Toomuc Reserve.

This leaves Doveton in third place, three games behind the second placed Lions and of course four games behind the, so far, invincible Hawks. But how far in front are the top two?

Monbulk of course have an unblemished record against the top five sides, having won all six of their clashes with Pakenham, Doveton, Officer and Mount Evelyn. The Hawks have a total winning margin of 137 points, with the average winning margin 22.73 points.

Those two stats could be much higher though, with Monbulk having 160 scoring shots across those six matches 72 more than their opponents who have totalled just 88.

Mount Evelyn have been the biggest benefactor from the Hawks inaccuracy. The Rovers have lost by just 16 points across their two matches with Monbulk, but have had just 35 scoring shots to 56.

Pakenham have just the one blemish in their six games against the top five, coming when Shane Williams booted ten goals in a massive 51 point win for Monbulk back in round five.

Over the course of their five wins they’ve run up a total winning margin of 116 points at an average of 23.1 points per win.

Whilst they may have just edged the Hawks in that statistic they are a fair way back when it comes to scoring shots. They’ve had 117 scoring shots against the top five (43 less than

Page 15: GraeVine - AFL Outer East – AFL Outer East · 2019-07-10 · All Material and photography’s prepared by the AFL Outer East, published in the AFL Outer East Football Record are

OUTER EAST

From the Media Desk continued

Monbulk) and have conceded 97 (nine more than Monbulk).

Where does that leave the other three?

Third placed Doveton have just two wins against the top five, both of those coming against Officer, who they defeated by 82 points in round one and by just 14 points in round eight.

Their current differential is - 33, despite three of their four losses (two to Pakenham, one to Mount Evelyn) coming by six goals or more. That round one win is helping them out a fair bit.

Mount Evelyn sit in fourth spot with a five and five record but have had just one win against a top five opponent. Their differential is similar to Doveton’s sitting at - 32, however unlike the Doves they’re biggest losing margin is just 29 points.

Officer fans may want to look away now.

Whilst the Roos defeated Mount Evelyn by 29 points in round six, they’ve lost their other five games against top five by a collective of 183 points with the Good Friday massacre really hurting their percentage.

What this tell us is that Monbulk and Pakenham seem to genuinely be two or three games better than the rest of the competition. The Lions are slightly more susceptible due to their slightly weaker attacking threat.

The other three are well off the boil.

Officer’s poor start to the year has skewed their stats and left them with a mountain of work to do percentage wise. Mount Evelyn seem fallible on the bigger grounds and have had a couple of let offs due to some kind kicking from their opponents and whilst Doveton were just two straight kicks away from defeating Monbulk, they too were benefactors of the Hawks inaccuracy in front of goal.

3. Brooker’s Blitz

On the road trip to Alexandra, Gembrook-Cockatoo coach Brad Coller would’ve felt the enormity of the oncoming football match.

The Brookers were coming off three straight losses and on their way to face a side whose form had been strong, especially on their home patch. They were also about to take on one of their two rivals for the final spot in the top five.

The objective was to play four quarters of football. Gembrook-Cockatoo are the fifth best (maybe higher) football side in the division on paper. If they put together four quarters they would no doubt be run away winners, and put one foot in the finals.

Come 4:45 pm the coach would be feeling a bit indifferent. His side failed to put together four quarters of football, kicking just three goals in the second half, with their opponents kicking eight in the same period - disappointing.

It didn’t matter on this occasion though, because by half time the game was over.

Gembrook-Cockatoo had played one of the most destructive halves of football to start the game kicking 14 goals to three, to lead by 41 points at quarter time and 65 points at the half.

Dylan Scott led the way alongside Matthew Templeton (six goals), Michael Firrito, Dante South (three goals) and Mitchell Brown (four goals).

Whilst Powelltown’s 123 point win over Thornton Eildon means they currently occupy the coveted fifth place on percentage, Gembrook-Cockatoo’s first half will have the Towners looking over their shoulder with a certain sense of fear.
