Ready to Swoop – By Matt Fotia

Narre Warren midfielder Trent Cody ‘can’t wait’ to take on the ladder leading Berwick in a few weeks time, after the Magpies went two and half games clear in second spot on the Outer East Premier Division Ladder.

Despite inaccuracy, Narre Warren won a nail biting game against Wandin by seven points 18.21(129) to 19.8(122) with Peter Gentile pulling off an incredible overhead kick late in the final term to poke a dagger through the Bulldogs hearts.

The Magpies kicked the opening three goals of the game in the opening three minutes, but the classy on baller says they knew Wandin would

push them all the way on their home deck.

“We knew they would come back, they’re a really good on this ground and in high scoring games, so we knew they we’re going to come.”

Wandin had defeated all of the other South East sides to visit the Kennel this season with it’s unique conditions playing right into their hands.

Cody praised the Dogs intensity and skill level on Yarra Valley FM 99.1, as he collected his Uncle Jack watch for player of the day.

“I don’t think you can really prepare for a ground like this,”

Page 6: GraeVine - AFL Outer East – AFL Outer East · Daniel captained the Senior side from 2013 to 2016, and led his team to two premiership wins - firstly in 2013 in Second Division and

“I was really fatigued at quarter time, it’s very inside so with no outside run you get bashed up a fair bit,”

“Then you see their full back (Tom Hinds) play on, get around one of our blokes and hit (Justin) Van Unen on the chest,”

“You can hit the full forward from full back here.”

Narre Warren trailed by 18 points at the final change after Wandin kicked 10 goals to three in the third quarter, with the Dogs beginning to get on top of the Magpies at every opportunity, producing multiple goal of the year contenders in the process, igniting their infamously vocal home support.

The Magpies extended their stay at the three quarter time huddle as coach Matt Shinners told his troops to go direct, back their abilities and reward their strong travelling support.

“Shinners said to just back ourselves in, all our supporters have come up from Narre Warren and to do it for them,”

“I think we put it together pretty well in the last quarter.”

“From the get go we wanted to go long and direct,”

“The few times we went short we got hurt and they kicked some goals from it.”

Narre Warren are out for some revenge this season after falling short in 2017 and 2018, both times at the hands of Berwick.

Last year in particular was a tough pill to swallow, considering the Magpies had finished the home and away season a game clear of the Wickers on top of the ladder.

Cody believes that this year’s crop of Magpies are ready to swoop and end Berwick’s stranglehold over them.

“The last couple of years haven’t sat well with us,”

“They’re obviously the team to beat, they’re so strong across the board,”

“But we’re young, we’re quick, we’ve got a different team and a different structure,”

“I can’t wait for it.”

Worksafe Report

2019 AFL Victoria Towards Zero Round Victorian football clubs will take part in the inaugural state-wide Towards Zero Round from August 3 to 4.

For the first time ever, AFL Victoria and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) will coordinate a state-wide fixtured round for all Victorian football clubs, from grassroots to senior level.

More than 1000 local football clubs will be showing their support for road safety in the inaugural round, with captains across metropolitan and regional Victoria swapping their usual playing number for the number zero.

AFL Victoria is proud of its long-term association with the TAC and are pleased to support the TAC in engaging the community and increasing awareness about critical road safety issues.

Head of AFL Victoria Rick Bell said he is proud to partner with the TAC to support an important initiative.

“Knowing the whole Victorian football community will be supporting the same message on the same day is very powerful and I am extremely proud of the football community for getting on board.

“Football clubs are such an important part of local communities and having them promote the message that zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads is possible will undoubtedly reach a substantial amount of people” Mr. Bell said.

TAC Acting Chief Executive Officer Bruce Crossett said the Towards Zero round aims to highlight the real value of reaching zero deaths on our roads and why it’s something all

Victorians should be working towards.

“Grassroots football and netball clubs are the life blood of their communities and I’m sure you would be hard pressed to find someone involved who hasn’t been affected by road trauma,” Mr Crossett said.

“We believe that zero is the only acceptable number of deaths on our roads, but we need everyone to play their part,” he said.

“This round is putting road safety at the fore and we’re asking everyone to prioritise safety to make sure every journey is a safe one.”

“The thousands of football and netball players right across the state cover hundreds of kilometres travelling to games throughout the season”, Mr Crossett said.

“Through our partnership with AFL Victoria, and the launch of the Towards Zero Round, we’re able to have a direct conversation with those Victorians about the role they play in making our roads safer and working towards zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads,” he said.

An important component of the partnership is the Community Grants Program, which provides clubs who take steps to lead road safety in their communities the chance to receive up to $10,000 in funding, and provide an important messaging platform for players, coaches, umpires and volunteers.

Daniel Plozza – 300 Senior Games

On Saturday 27 July 2019, Daniel Plozza played his 300th senior game for Healesville Football Netball Club against Narre Warren at Narre Warren.

To commemorate his milestone game, Daniel had a great game and also kicked a goal.He was chaired off by Simon Gordon and Lachlan Pratt, with a guard of honour by his team mates and the Narre Warren players.

Daniel’s football career is what grassroots football is all about. He played all of his junior football (100 games) with our Junior Club before coming to play in our Under 18’s in 2002.

Playing two seasons with the Under 18’s, Daniel moved straight into the Senior side in 2004 where he first pulled on the number 36, which he has proudly worn since as one of our key backmen.

In the Senior side that day, he played with Simon Gordon and Casey Adams. He has been part of a formidable back line in the Seniors with Casey for over 15 years, only missing 10 games in total.

Over these years, Daniel has played on some of the finest footballers in the competition and has not lowered his colours too often. He is truly respected by the opposition players and his teammates.

Daniel captained the Senior side from 2013 to 2016, and led his team to two premiership wins - firstly in 2013 in Second Division and then in 2016 in First Division.

He is very highly regarded for his playing ability, winning many awards, and he has always been a consistent player. He is also very consistent with his pre-game ritual, consisting of his mum’s chicken schnitzel roll, two hot dogs and three dim sims, all washed down with a Powerade.

Daniel’s career with the Bloods is a great football story.

We believe that Daniel’s career is what junior football club and coaches are all about, producing players to reach such wonderful milestones at senior level.

Daniel comes from one of our great footballing families, his grandfather, great uncle, father, uncles and brother have all played for the mighty bloods and his sister, Beck, has worked behind the scenes in the canteen and more recently taken on the role of secretary for the past three years.

Both of Daniel’s parents, Rob and Chris (who were awarded Life Membership in 2017), have been tireless workers at our club and you can still see them working for the Club at every home game. A highlight in Daniel’s football career was the year he was nominated for the Interleague team and played on the very same oval as his grandfather and great uncle in St Arnaud.

The Committee and our Coaches appreciate what a great servant and integral part of the Club he has been and has greatly assisted and promoted our Club.

He has always supported and encouraged our players and volunteers to perform at their best and to feel a part of our Club. Last year, Daniel was rewarded for his dedication and service and the Club was immensely proud to award him Life Membership.

On behalf of the Club and all supporters we congratulate Daniel on the fabulous milestone of 300 Senior games. We are sure your family must be very proud of you, just as we are at Healesville Football Netball Club.

Umpiring News….

Thanks to all the umpires that helped out on the boundary and in the goals last Sunday for the first week of junior finals. It was fantastic to fill all the appointments and certainly adds a real professional look for the boys and girls that are playing in the finals. It also provides a great opportunity and experience for our junior field umpires to work with a full panel, plus meet some senior umpires for the first time. The feedback that Brendan received from the coaches at each of the venues on the day was all positive and we wish all umpires the very best for their games tomorrow.

Congratulations to the following umpires that have been selected to represent the Yarra Ranges at the V/Line Cup Under 16 Championships for boys and girls, which will be held in Shepparton from September 23rd – 26th. Over the years, we have had a number of our umpires gain great experience from these Championships, which has been a great benefit in their umpiring journeys.

Francis Nickell ( F ) , Campbell Harris ( F ) , Macy Dobson ( F ) , Sophie Mastaing ( B ) , Alex Tomada ( G ) & Tessa Simpson ( G )

With finals fast approaching in the senior ranks, let’s all continue to act and present ourselves in a professional way both on and off the field by making sure we –

• Have clean gear

• Dress appropriately when arriving at games and get there at the right time.

• Watch what you say to spectators, players, coaches & officials whether you are on or off the ground.

• Support and encourage your fellow umpires

• Enter and leave the field as a team in a tight group.

Have a great day and enjoy the footy and netball.

Jodi Chandler – 250 Netball Games

Healesville Football Netball Club are also pleased to announce that Jodi Chandler will be playing her 250th Netball game with our Club this weekend.

Jodi is the first player to do so at this Club since the game was reintroduced to the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League in 2005.

She has been playing netball since she was knee high to a grasshopper and is the only current player who has played at Queens Park, the last link of our Club to this ground, so to speak.

In 2005, Jodie was the inaugural A Grade YVMDFL Best and Fairest winner and since then this award has been named in her honour.

Jodi became a Board Member in 2007 after the then League President, Tony Mitchell, asked her to assist with the development of the game within the League, a role she finished in 2017.

Jodi’s drive and commitment to the game of Netball in our community and League is truly remarkable.

Within our Club, Jodie has achieved most things:

Best and Fairest, Captain and Coach

She has also had the unique opportunity to play eight A Grade games with her daughter, Chenile, which is a great achievement. In 2016 Jodi, received Best and Fairest for our B Grade Team showing that she is still a very competitive player. Jodi currently coaches the U/17s netball team at Kilsyth.

Jodi and Chenile have played Netball together in the Eastern Health Indigenous games and performed a “Welcome to Country” at every home game of North Melbourne Football Club which is played on the large screen.

Jodi, Chenile, her mother and nieces conduct the pre-game welcome at the AFL Dreamtime Essendon v Richmond games. Not only does Jodi play netball, she is also a very accomplished athlete in running 100 to 800 metres events, including Long Jump, competing in the World Masters in Athletics which is held every 4 years, wining Gold, Silver and Bronze at different events at this level.

The example Jodi shows to our younger players (both netballers and footballers alike) is that you can continue with your sport and be involved with our Club for many years.

Jodi’s family is an integral part of our Club as her daughter, Chenile, plays in our A Grade team and her son, Jake, has played Seniors and Reserves for Healesville.

Jodi and her husband, Thomas, are one of our Life Members, and Thomas has played over 300 games for the Club, has been a coach and is currently our Football Manager.

Our Club is extremely fortunate to have such a family playing the sport that they love and helping with the administration.

We congratulate Jodi and we thank you for your commitment and example and hope you have an enjoyable season - we are very proud of your achievements.

From the Media Desk – By Matt Fotia

What a weekend of football with another thriller at the Kennel, the Bombers knocking off the Doves, Mount Evelyn roaring home and Powelltown locking away finals football with another massive win on their home deck.

Check out the Footy Review to see why small grounds rule and big grounds drool, how innovation won the day and how Doveton might’ve thrown away the double chance.

1. Small Grounds Rule

On Thursday afternoon the AFL Outer East announced the finals venues for the respective 2019 senior finals series. As expected the marquee fixtures for the year were placed at some of the bigger grounds in the competition, and with good reason.

Pakenham, Woori Yallock and Yarra Glen have all the key ingredients. Plenty of parking space, ample room for spectators, barbecues and alike, as well as plenty of room and access for the appropriate media outlets. Oh and of course they’re big surfaces, with an even coverage of carpet like grass.

However lets for a moment take high scores as the only prerequisite for picking a finals venue. If that were the case it would be small grounds all the way.

Big grounds allow the use of methodical systems, teams setting up behind the ball and on some occasions games are played like chess, with each team analysing each and every move, trying to break down their opponents strategy.

Smaller grounds give us more one on one contests, chaotic passages of play, high scores and genuine excitement!

To prove my point I’ve taken a look at three of the smaller grounds in the competition, Wandin, Belgrave and Powelltown and looked at their attributes.

First off the Kennel.

It’s hosted two all time classics this year against Berwick and Narre Warren, with it’s patchy grass, wide wings, short ‘fifty’ metre arcs and slight slope creating some thrilling action.

Add in the vocal support and this ground just oozes high scoring games.

In the eight games played at Wandin this season there has been a total of 1810 points scored at an average of 226.25 points per game. On four occasions both sides have kicked over 100 points and on all bar one occasion both sides managed to score over 80 points.

The charismatic, big bag loving forwards are also big fans of the doghouse.

There’s been 14 hauls of five goals or more kicked down at Clegg Road in 2019. Wandin skipper Justin Van Unen has four of them, with six against Upwey-

Tecoma and Olinda Ferny Creek, five against Healesville and seven against Narre Warren at the weekend.

Daniel Gorringe has the best individual haul, with nine against Healesville.

Next off the rank - Belgrave.

The Magpie nest has had 1100 points in six games this season at an average of 183.33 points per game. Only three times has a side managed less than 75 points and in their last game against Officer there was a massive 248 points scored.

Unlike Wandin, Belgrave hasn’t been the best hunting ground for those goal hungry poachers.

There have been seven four goal efforts so far this season, but only twice has someone collected a handful (5) of goals, with Joshua Richmond and Elliot Avis the culprits. Both times the Magpies were on the losing side.

Finally there’s little old Powelltown.

The Demons play with a saw mill in the background and in recent weeks a mud pit in the middle. But this lack of firm footing hasn’t stopped the goals one iota. In eight games this season the Timber Yard has seen 1406 points at an average of 175.75 per game.

There have been over 100 points kicked on six occasions, with the Demons getting over the 120 mark on four occasions (121, 142, 168, 121). They also managed 118 against Kinglake last weekend and 105 against Yarra Junction in round one.

There’s been six bags of five or more with James Rohan and Dean Roy kicking five of those bags, Jack Garthwaite got the other one with five against Alexandra earlier in the season.

In total that’s 4.316 points at 196.18 a game across the three venues, with 22 individual bags of five goals or more - a best of nine - 11 games where both sides have scored over 80 points and 19 scores of 100.

So whilst big grounds have a lot of advantages over their smaller sisters they’ll never be able to match the end to end, high scoring drama that small grounds create.

So that’s why small grounds rule and big grounds drool.

2. Innovation wins the day

Following on from the beauty of small grounds, lets talk about that match on the weekend.

Narre Warren travelled out to Wandin, the last side from the South East to enter the cauldron that is the Kennel.

So far none of their friends from down the highway had managed to escape alive, with Berwick, Beaconsfield and Cranbourne all going down in

Page 15: GraeVine - AFL Outer East – AFL Outer East · Daniel captained the Senior side from 2013 to 2016, and led his team to two premiership wins - firstly in 2013 in Second Division and

From the Media Desk continued

enthralling battles with the Dogs.

The Magpies looked set to buck the trend with aplomb however, kicking the opening three goals in a canter to lead by 22 points at the first break, as Michael Collins and Trent Cody did as they liked.

Despite controlling the game on the scoreboard the flow of the game was like most games Wandin had hosted this season.

There was no flow, just violent thrusts of momentum with both sides enjoying periods where they dominated the clearances and had inside fifty after inside fifty.

Justin Van Unen set the goal kicking trend for the afternoon late in the first half. The mercurial full forward nailed two freakish goals (for the regular punter) from the clubroom pocket to finish off the second quarter, bringing the margin back to 21 points.

At the time they looked set to be the goals of the day.

His side had grabbed the momentum and they ran with it.

Surging forwards throughout the third quarter they left the Magpies in their wake, unable to lay a hand on the rabid Dogs who were physical, making the small ground even smaller with their ferocious hunt on the ball.

They kicked 10 goals to three as the darkness began to set in with David Barton kicking two classy majors, Clinton Johnston curling one in from around 30 metres out and the unusually quiet Brendan Foley one-upping his skipper with a wonderful check-side from the pocket.

Surely that one would be goal of the day.

Suddenly 18 points down the Magpies rose in the final quarter as the game tightened.

Patrick Hodgett kicked two goals to maintain the Dogs lead but Narre Warren were relentless and were beginning to play a chaotic brand themselves. Away went the precise handballs and in came the long kicks forward.

Live-wire Tom Toner found the big sticks for the third time, veteran Colin McNamara held his nerve and clever wingman Tom Miller hit the scoresheet as both sides edged towards the 20 goal mark.

Suddenly Narre Warren couldn’t kick straight. Behind after behind went through, rushed or otherwise. Six points became five, five became four.

When Daniel Jackson wrenched the ball from the pack and hooked one over his shoulder, he would’ve been sure he’d kicked his seventh and the match winner, but it wasn’t to be as Joshua James stuck out a desperate boot to rush a behind.

One point the margin.

The resulting kick in found its way to Brad Scalzo, who went to the top of the square, where the ever-present Tom Hinds spoiled once again, sending the ball upwards. Upon its descent Peter Gentile seemed destined to get first hands to the footy, but he would no doubt be tackled immediately such was the pressure from Wandin.

But the number five had different ideas. Gentile planted his left leg and swung his right boot through the ball, sending it through the big sticks. He’d swapped oval ball for round ball.

That was goal of the day.

With one foul swipe of his leg, Gentile had not only won the game for the Magpies, he’d kept Olinda Ferny Creek’s season alive and had helped Cranbourne’s chances of finals football.

As a junior he would’ve been criticised for even thinking about it. Grab the ball with your hands would’ve been the instruction.

But not today.

Today innovation won the day.

3. Bombers blow it up

Whilst all of that was going on, Emerald were casually blowing the race for third spot on the Division One Ladder wide open, as the baby bombers got the jump on Doveton before hanging on to win by 12 points in a massive win for the club, giving Jame Marshall and his men something to build off heading into 2020.

The Doves still remain a game clear of Mount Evelyn, who came from behind to knock off Officer in another classic and are now no certainty to be third come the completion of the home and away season.

They take on the top two sides in Monbulk and Pakenham over the next fortnight before travelling out to Warburton Millgrove to finish the season. An easy win on paper, but as Mount Evelyn can attest too, the Burras are a different proposition on their home patch.

Both Mount Evelyn and Officer have stronger percentages than the Doves and both have easier finishes to the season, taking on just one of the other top five sides to finish the season.

The Roos would have to knock off Pakenham to have any real hope of grabbing third spot, but stranger things have happened. Meanwhile Mount Evelyn have been close to Monbulk on two occasions, and will be hoping third time is the charm.

With the nature of the Division One top five - especially from third to fifth - being that anyone can beat anyone, the double chance is even more important and thus so is the Bombers big win this weekend.
