Forthcoming TitlesNew Books for 2019/2020October in our calendar features quality children’s titles both new and familiar. The publication of Geiriau Diflanedig sees the best-selling children’s book The Lost Words, authored by Robert Macfarlane and illustrated by Kate Greenaway Medal 2019 winner Jackie Morris, made available in the Welsh language. Robert’s acrostic spell-poems based on twenty threatened nature words have been skilfully adapted by award-winning author Mererid Hopwood, and combined with Jackie Morris’s beautiful illustrations make this is a book to treasure.

BBC broadcaster Jason Korsner’s rhyming picture book What Can You See? encourages children to observe the world around them and see what they can discover in Hannah Rounding’s wonderfully detailed illustrations. This publishes together with I Like to Put Food in My Welly, illustrated by Max Low, which plays with language to conjure a sequence of images sure to have children in stitches.

The republished Koshka’s Tales – Stories from Russia, written and illustrated by James Mayhew, brings this celebrated collection back to the market for young readers to enjoy. Five stories from Russian folklore are masterfully retold, enchantingly illustrated, and stunningly reproduced in this new hardback edition.

In the charming gift book A Cuddle and a Cwtch, illustrated by James Munroe, children’s author Sarah KilBride introduces the Welsh word cwtch to the English language. A term for a cuddle or embrace, Sarah’s rhyming poem, suitable for all ages, explores all of the ways in which a cwtch can be understood and shared with our loved ones.

February 2020 sees the publication of Roy Noble’s first title for children, Walking with Bamps, an illustrated story capturing the quiet magic of the relationship between Bronwen and her grandfather on their outings through the countryside. An ideal title to read together with children, this is a celebration of the cross-generational bonds of family.

Acorn, Bramble, Dandelion, Otter – in recent years these nature words have been disappearing from the lives of children.

This vital book celebrates a threatened language and the natural world it describes through Robert Macfarlane’s acrostic spell-poems, each capturing the inherent awe and magic of their subject and encouraging revitalised engagement with the world around us, brilliantly adapted to the Welsh language by Mererid Hopwood.

Jackie Morris’s hand-painted illustrations accompany each poem, creating a visual treasure to be enjoyed for generations to come.

Koshka’s Tales – Stories from Russia by James Mayhew

Brave princes, evil witches and beautiful maidens abound as the tales of Koshka, the wise old story-telling cat, unfold. James Mayhew has drawn inspiration from the traditional stories and art style of old Russia to re-tell five enchanting tales in this re-published edition of a children’s classic.

‘I adore Koshka’s Tales ... This is a book to be loved and shared time and time again, and I firmly believe a copy should be on every bookshelf.’ Sophie Anderson, author - The House with Chicken Legs

‘Koshka’s Tales is a marvellous book, its language as glossy and gratifying as its artwork. Its tales within a tale, as fatly plaited as any sultana’s hair, weave real Eastern enchantment.’ Geraldine McCaughrean, The Times
