Grammar: Sentence Structure

•There are 4 basic structures of sentences:•Simple

•Compound

•Complex

•Compound-Complex

Clause review

• Independent clause: Can stand on its own as a sentence (complete thought). • Has a subject and a verb.

• Example: I rode my bike.

•Dependent clause: Cannot stand on its own (not a complete thought)• Does not have a subject and a verb

• Example: until it was too cold.

Simple sentences

•Has one independent clause.

•Example: “I rode my bike.”

Compound

•Has at least two independent clauses.

•Uses a conjunction (and/but/or) to link the independent clause.

•Example: “I rode my bike, but I wish I had drove instead.

Complex

•Has an independent clause and at least one dependent clause.

•Example: I rode my bike until it was too cold to ride.

Compound-Complex

•Has at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

•Example: I rode my bike until it was too cold to ride, and wish I would have drove instead.
