Alcatraz Island Tour
Here’s a little blast from the past and a look back to June 15, 2015 when The Granada visited Alcatraz Island. Un-fortunately, this article did not previously make it to the Gazette so, here it is now for your enjoyment. Alcatraz is home to an abandoned prison, the site of the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States, early military fortifications, and natural features such as rock pools and a seabird colony. The journey began with a short ferry ride to the island. Upon arriving, we were led by park rangers on a small docent tour which brought us up to the prison gates. Once there, we were given headphones and left on own for a self guided tour. The place was packed! The island became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in 1972 and was opened to the public a year later. It is amazing how, even after all this time, Alcatraz still receives more than 1.3 million visitors each year.

Meet Shella
Shella Robin is one of our most valued employees here at
The Granada. No matter what task we assign to her, she
approaches it with great enthusiasm and a bright smile.
Shella was born in Medan City, Indonesia. She came to
America in 2010 to live with her mother and sister in Dallas,
Texas. Two years later, in 2012, she headed out to Califor-
nia to seek better employment opportunities. Lucky for us,
she decided to make San Francisco her new home. She was
referred to The Granada by her friend Liani Tjokronegoro.
Since then, she has made many new friends. Shella says
that her goal for each day is to, “Always be ready to do a
good job and be nice to everyone.” How cool is THAT?

It’s hard to believe it’s already March and that means Spring is right around the corner. Incidental-ly, the word March comes from the Latin word “Martius,” which was the first month of the earliest Ro-man calendar. It was named for Mars, the Roman god of war who was also regarded as a guardi-an of agriculture and an ancestor of the Roman people through his sons Romulus and Remus.
Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday March 13 at 2:00 am. Be sure to set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed on Satur-day night March 12. That's good news for me because Arizona does not turn their clocks ahead which means their time will be in sync with San Francisco and I won’t con-stantly have to figure out the time change in my head.
Be sure to join us for our monthly field trip. This month, on Friday March 18, we will be visiting the Chabot Space & Science Center, where we have booked a one hour docent led tour followed by an exciting planetarium show all for the low-low reduced rate of only $13.00/head. Sign up in the office today!
March 17th is Saint Patrick’s Day and we will be celebrating with some Irish treats from the kitchen for dinner like Irish Pot Roast and Green Ice Cream.
And March 27 is Easter Sunday. We will be hosting our regularly sched-uled Ice Cream Social in the after-noon along with an Easter Egg Hunt and a nice Ham dinner in the even-ing.
On a note of mixed joys, I think I will be re-retiring again in the near future. I am told that Henry misses me and I need to be with my wife and daughter again so they don’t forget who I am. No one knows what the future holds so, instead of saying “Goodbye” I will just say “à bientôt” until we meet again.

March 27 is Easter Sunday which, coincidentally, is
also the same day of our regularly scheduled Ice
Cream Social. To celebrate the holiday, along with
our usual assortment of ice cream and cookie
treats, will be our annual Easter Egg Hunt! You
can search the lobby and surrounding area to see
who can find the most colored eggs. Have fun!!
