Granada

History

• Granada was originally known as Ilbyr during the time it was settled by its original native tribes.

• The Romans built their own city and called it Illibris.

• The Arabs in the 8th Century claimed the area and gave the city its current name, Granada.

• It was the last Muslim city in Spain in 1492, when it was taken by Queen Isabel and King Ferdinand.

Alhambra

• In the 13th and 14th Century it was a palace, a citadel, a fortress, the home of high government officials, servants of the court, and elite soldiers.

• At the center stands the palace of Charles V, built during the Spanish Renaissance.

El Generalife

The Cathedral

Contains the Royal Chapel, the tombs of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand.

Economy

• Predominately agricultural.

• Grow cereals, sugarcane, tobacco, olive trees, oranges, lemons, figs, almonds, and pomegranates.

• There is also lead mining and the production of iron ore.
