Formula 1 could hardly have hoped for a better season-opener than last weekends Australian Grand Prix.

Fears after Friday practice that Red Bull had a comfortable performance margin over the field proved unfounded, with a four-way battle between the reigning champions, Ferrari, Mercedes and Lotus now appears to be in the offing this season.

McLaren is currently a fair way behind the eight-ball, but the resources and in-season development ability of the Woking-based operation ensures it shouldnt be counted out, either.

Conversely, Lotus is the least well funded out of the heavy-hitters, and will be doing well to maintain its early performance over the season.

For Formula 1s sake, lets hope that Lotus does have the ability to maintain its status as a genuine front-runner.

Theres no doubt that Kimi Raikkonen brings something a little unique to grid in the personality department.

The team has also strived to be different over the last 12 months, often poking fun at the Finns typically dour public demeanour through everything from short online videos featuring the man himself, to ice cream shaped USB press kits.

An edgy F1 team with a potent youth and experience driver line-up? Sounds as much like the Red Bull of 2009 as it does the Lotus of 2013...

    A salivating start

  • Melbourne master heads to MalaysiaSepang to show if Kimi Raikkonen and Lotus know what theyre doing...

Kimi raikkonen may be the least likely driver on the grid to get carried away with talk of title chances after winning the opening race of the season, but theres undoubtedly plenty to smile about right now for the characteristically dead-pan Finn.

The 2007 World Champion has already achieved what many have failed to do in the past in making a winning comeback to the pinnacle of his sport.

Lotus arguably produced exactly what Raikkonen needed in his return season last year - a car that was a consistent contender, but one that didnt bring with it the

expectations of a drive at Red Bull, Ferrari or McLaren.

The 2012 campaign yielded a single victory and a seemingly over-the-odds third in the world title. Having already equalled the former statistic at the opening race of 2013 in Melbourne, beating the latter is a real possibility.

As it is each season, the Malaysian Grand Prix will be a solid test of the Albert Park race winners credentials.

From the cold, bumpy and relatively tight streets of Melbourne to the smooth sweeps of a sizzling Sepang; those who can make their cars work on both are

almost guaranteed to be in the contest for the long haul.

It feels good but its only after one race, says Raikkonen of his current status as Formula 1 World Championship leader, an accolade he has not held since the 2008 Turkish Grand Prix.

It doesnt really change our aim and how we approach this year. Definitely, we are happy with the win but there is an awful lot to still to do to win the championship. We seemed to have a good car in Albert Park, so hopefully it works well in the next races also.

(Malaysia) is a difference place, its

    Round 2 - Sepang I Cover Story

  • going to be much hotter there so its very difficult to say how the cars will feel, who will be fastest after having done just one race, he adds.

I think we have to do two or three races before we really know who is where and whats going to happen. Its probably going to rain again in Malaysia at some point but it will be a different circuit, different conditions. Our car worked well in Australia and usually at least last year in hot conditions its been good for us so hopefully it will turn out to be a good weekend.

The signs are certainly suggesting that the Lotus E21 is a genuine threat this year. Tyre life, which was a strength of last years E20, is essentially what scored Raikkonen the AGP win, with his two-stop strategy requiring two long runs on the medium rubber, something that the likes of Red Bulls RB9 appeared unable to achieve.

The Red Bull, though, was the outright pace-setter in Melbourne, with Sebastian Vettel appearing mighty in Friday practice, the mixed weather Sunday morning qualifying, and the early phase of each stint in the race.

With the Ferrari and Mercedes teams also proving close to the pace in Australia, theres no doubt that its still perilously tight at the top.

The Malaysian event has been good to Raikkonen in the past. It was the scene of his first victory, with McLaren in 2003, while he also won there with Ferrari in 2008. Predictably, any notion that the race might hold sentimental value to the Finn is quickly quashed.

I would not say that circuit is more important for me its not that special for me - but its quite a nice place to race at, he says. I like it and the challenge is always at the highest level in the beginning of the year in the heat. Its also one of those circuits where it usually rains sometime during the weekend. So you have to plan the programme with that possibility, too.

Looking even further down the 19 race road that leads to the world championship trophy, whether Lotus will be able to keep up the development pace of its better financed rivals is the key question. But this is one that the 33-year-old Raikkonen believes has already been answered.

There was a big question mark last year over whether our team could keep up with the development of the bigger teams and I dont think we did a bad job, he says.

Of course its not going to be easy for us. Im sure we have the people and all the tools to make it happen. Budget is always a factor and its no secret that we dont have the same money as Ferrari, Red Bull or Mercedes. If we did have more sponsors Im sure wed have a better chance in the battle against those teams.

Its a long season. If you do things right it will go nicely but one thing can change the whole year. You do a few things a little bit wrong it can turn around and go downhill after that. So we just have to do our normal things, like we did last year and put the good effort into new parts and if were happy we keep them and if not we have to look more closely.

But like I said, so far it has been good, so there is no reason why we cant keep it up.

rear wingDownforce levels are very similar to the levels in Melbourne.

BrakesThere are four pretty heavy braking zones into turn one, in to turn four, into turn 14, and then into turn 15. High temperatures are not such a threat as there are long straights between the braking events to cool the brakes.

    the CAr

Technical preview with the Lotus F1 team.

The track surface is very abrasive, particularly in comparison to Albert Park, which is very smooth.

High speed stability is an essential requirement of the tyre in Malaysia due to the circuit layout, which contains some long straights and quick direction changes.

turns 1-2Good engine tractability required through turns 1 and 2, the second of which leads to a high speed section so a good exit is needed.

turn 3Strong stability from the tyres is required through the high speed corner to aid driver confidence.

    turn 4Heavy braking here

turns 5-6These high speed turns require stiff suspension. The car can be run lower and stiffer as there are no high kerbs in Sepang which is beneficial for this.

turn 7Turning whilst braking means this corner can prove punishing for the tyres.

turn 15Heavy braking from a long straight into the final corner, which is followed by another long straight, means a good overtaking opportunity, and a variety of lines are taken here.

Start/Finish straightThe KERS is more effective for qualifying in Sepang because of the where the start-finish line is as you get two bites of the cherry with the KERS usage on the out lap. Heavy braking at the end of the start / finish straight. The brakes have cooled along the straight so should not overheat. A good overtaking location.

    the CirCuit

SuspensionSepang requires a good all round car. There are high speed straights. There are very high speed changes of direction in turns five and six. There are some reasonable traction events with some very low speed tight double hairpin at turn one and turn two. There are no high kerbs so the car can be ran with a lower ride height than otherwise giving better overall downforce.

tyresPirellis medium and hard tyres are used. The track is very demanding on the tyres due to its aggressive surface, heavy braking areas, long straights and wide variety of speeds and corners.

Front wingThe threat of understeer is not as prevalent as in Albert Park so we can run with slightly less front wing.

engineMalaysia sits to the upper end of the power tracks with 60% of the lap spent at full throttle, but the main challenge is preparing the engines cooling systems to cope with the intense heat and humidity. Ambient temperatures can reach over 40C so engine cooling becomes crucial.

    Round 2 - Sepang I track Details

  • the lotus F1 team made a powerful statement at Albert Park. they may not have had the outright fastest car, but Kimi raikkonen won, and won convincingly.

Expect the black-and-gold entries to be even stronger this weekend, with higher track temperatures expected to play further into the hands of the tyre-friendly E21s.

All eyes will be on Raikkonen, but team-mate Romain Grosjean could also fare well after struggling with a handling imbalance during the Australian Grand Prix.

2013 Formula 1 World Championship Entry List

Red Bull and Ferrari will make Lotus earn every point in Malaysia, with the former having been the outright pace-setter in Australia.

Another front-row lock-out could be on the cards for Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, but winning the race will require better tyre usage than that seen at Albert Park.

The fact that both Ferraris were on the pace last weekend should give Ferrari great confidence. Fernando Alonso brilliantly won in Sepang last year with a car that was far less competitive than what he will enjoy

this time around.A weather-effected race this year could

be to the benefit of Mercedes, whose cars - particularly that of Nico Rosberg - appeared sublime during the wet running last weekend.

Further back, the Force India was stronger at Albert Park than many expected, leaving the team to again target a double points finish.

McLaren, Toro Rosso and Williams were arguably the opening round disappointments and will be doing well to score points.
