  • Phoenix, Arizona DADUM HOUSE

  • Grand Ave has endured new improvements and addi-tions to activate the neigh-borhood. It is an ideal site for introducing a Machiya House dwellings occation-ally built in dense infrastruc-ture. I focused on a trian-gular site on 11th Ave and Fillmore along Grand Ave to fulfill a small house.

  • The initial research begins with a daily routine of a cli-ent. The routine is developed in the owner apartment as he enters through the door. Personal items are placed as he walks through the entry of the apartment which formulated the concept of a datum house. Defining the client routine is throwing his wallet and phone onto the couch, tossing keys onto the coffee table, and taking off shoes to the side.

  • The Datum House on Grand Ave. is based on a coordinate system placed at 40 above floor level. I designed the house by adjusting the furniture surface to reach 40 and the floor shifts to the height of the furniture in use.

The arrangement of steps is at 8. To use the kitchen, the floor is risen at 8 to be at the countertop surface at 32.

The movement and routine begins as you enter the door. The shifting of the house varies depending on which routine is used.

The datum line is the primary con-cept applied as well treated dif-ferently on the first and second floors. The first and second floor has a furniture datum line and the second floor consist of translu-cent glass installed above the 40 datum line to conceal and give a sense of privacy.

The house becomes your person-al rountine as you walk through. Corridors are used on both levels to contain the routine.

  • The diagram illustrates the first floor datum line at 40 where most activity is tak-en place. There is a band of glass above the 40 to not disturb the datum line.

The second diagram dem-onstrates the upper level where translucent glass is applied to conceal the bed-room/bathroom section of the house.

  • For environmental con-cerns, perforated metal screen is installed from the roof to the datum line to add illuminance into the house. The metal screens is complementary to the sur-rounding infrastructure of the neighborhood.
