Grand Country Quilters Summer Mystery Quilt 2020 Week #8 Four More “Big Blocks” This week we are going to start sewing some of those “left behind” parts together to make 4 more “Big Blocks”. Let’s begin…but first we need to collect all the parts – Last week I had you put some of the parts in a bag and labeled it “week 8”..grab that – it should include the following; 4 tree blocks with trunks. 4 “complete” tree blocks with the 2 ½” Light rectangle at the top and Red 2 ½” rectangle on the bottom 4 lights – 2 ½” x 5” 4 lights – 1 ½” x 5” *(oops! They’re the wrong size - toss these in the scrap bin and we’ll re-cut) 4 Red 2 ½” x 5” along with the above…. you will need the following; 8 red “four-patch” blocks 3 ½” x 3 ½” 32 gold Half Square Triangles (2” x 2”) 16 Light 2” x 2” squares 4 Lights 2” x 6 ½” 4 Lights 2” x 8” 4 Reds 2 ½” x 8” 4 Reds 2 ½” x 10” CUT – from the Light scraps – 4 @ 2” x 3 ½” Sawtooth Star Block – Make 4 Sew two Gold Half Square Triangles together to form the “star points” Press this seam open. Layout the block as shown. Sew a 2” square to the “sides” of the top and bottom “star points”. Sew the two “star points” to the red Four Patch as shown. Pin as needed. Sew these rows together to form the block. Pin as needed. Trim 6 ½” x 6 ½”. IMPORTANT NOTE! Make note of the direction of the Red squares on the Four Patch center…you will want ALL of them to go in the same direction! o Add the Light 2” x 6 ½” to one side (did you read the above “note”?) Press to Light strip. o Now add the Light 2” x 8”. Press to Light strip. o Now add the Red 2 ½” x 8” (Log cabin block style) Press to the Red o And finally the Red 2 ½” x 10”. Grand Country Quilters Summer Mystery Quilt 2020 Week #8 Four More “Big Blocks” This week we are going to start sewing some of those “left behind” parts together to make 4 more “Big Blocks”. Let’s begin…but first we need to collect all the parts – Last week I had you put some of the parts in a bag and labeled it “week 8”..grab that – it should include the following;

4 tree blocks with trunks.

4 “complete” tree blocks with the 2 ½” Light rectangle at the top and Red 2 ½” rectangle on the bottom

4 lights – 2 ½” x 5”

4 lights – 1 ½” x 5” *(oops! They’re the wrong size - toss these in the scrap bin and we’ll re-cut)

4 Red 2 ½” x 5” along with the above…. you will need the following;

8 red “four-patch” blocks 3 ½” x 3 ½”

32 gold Half Square Triangles (2” x 2”)

16 Light 2” x 2” squares

4 Lights 2” x 6 ½”

4 Lights 2” x 8”

4 Reds 2 ½” x 8”

4 Reds 2 ½” x 10” CUT – from the Light scraps – 4 @ 2” x 3 ½” Sawtooth Star Block – Make 4

Sew two Gold Half Square Triangles together to form the “star points”

Press this seam open.

Layout the block as shown.

Sew a 2” square to the “sides” of the top and bottom “star points”.

Sew the two “star points” to the red Four Patch as shown. Pin as needed.

Sew these rows together to form the block. Pin as needed.

Trim 6 ½” x 6 ½”. IMPORTANT NOTE! Make note of the direction of the Red squares on the Four Patch center…you will want ALL of them to go in the same direction!

o Add the Light 2” x 6 ½” to one side (did you read the above “note”?) Press to Light strip.

o Now add the Light 2” x 8”. Press to Light strip. o Now add the Red 2 ½” x 8” (Log cabin block style) Press to the Red o And finally the Red 2 ½” x 10”. Press to the Red

Trees – to be trimmed!

Collect your 4 Tree blocks with trunks. Trim the “trunks” of the 4 Tree Blocks so that the block now measures 6 ¼” tall…(you will trim ¼” off the trunk)

Press the Tree block seams to the Green triangle tree.

Sew the 2 ½” Light to the bottom. Press to the Light.

Sew the 2 ½” Red to the bottom. Press to the Light.

Make 4

Measures 5” x 10” Sew this “Tree Unit” to the left side of the “Sawtooth Star Unit”.

Press to the Tree.

Make 4

Measures 10” x 14 ½” Four Patch Tops & completing the Big Block– – follow the arrows to help you position the 4- Patch blocks.

Sew a 2” x 3 ½” to the side of 2 Red Four Patch blocks with the Light square at the top

Sew a 2” x 3 ½” to the side of 2 Red Four Patch blocks with the Red square at the top

Trim 5” x 3 ½”

Sew one to the top of the “complete” Tree block (refer to photo).

Make 4. measures 5” x 14 ½”

Refer to the photo – sew this new “Tree unit” to the “Sawtooth Star/Tree unit”. Make 4. Measures 14 ½” x 14 ½”
