Dear Brothers of Council 9924:

Council 9924’s 2019-2020 Quota from Su-

preme is 18 new members and 7 new insur-

ance members – tough target for a somewhat

aging council such as we have. It is imperative

that we get some fresh input for recruiting

new members. Sam Mattoni leads this pro-

gram, John Chiumento is working up an initia-

tive for youth and young knights and a Schol-

arship program that will be preferential to children of knights. Joe DellaPenna

heads the Retention Committee. Ron Bowes is active with a Diocesan Radio

Program that will target Catholic Education & Youth. We are budgeting money

to help other OLL ministries and trust that they too will help in our recruitment

efforts. It’s one of my goals to achieve interaction with all of the above and our

Insurance Agent, Dan Stanton. I am therefore calling on all the brothers to give

us your ideas as to what we can do to achieve our goal – you may contact any of

the six of us and please give us your input by October 15, 2019.

I am pleased to announce and thank the brotherhood for reaching the $500

Scholarship Matching Challenge – this will add $1,000 to that program. Equally

as important but with less time remaining is the $500 Golf Matching Challenge,

which, when met will add $1,000 to the bottom line for that fund-raiser; it cur-

rently stands at $205 paid and $55 pledged, which means that we’ll have to

come up with $240 more by the October Regular meeting. If you have pledged

some money to either of the above, please check the sign-up sheets and pay for

your pledge. We certainly don’t want to miss out on this ‘free money’ so please

help us out.

Additionally, I want to extend an early personal invitation to all the brothers for you to participate in this year’s Show of Shows, on Sunday, November 10, 2019,

History of the Change in the Rosary

In 1569, the papal bull Consueverunt Romani Pontifices by the Dominican Pope Pius V officially established the devotion to the rosary in the Catholic Church. Saint Peter Canisius, a Doctor of the Church, who is credited with adding to the Hail Mary the sentence "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners", was an ardent advocate of the rosary and promoted it (and its Marian devotion in general) as the best way to repair the damage done to the Church by the Reformation.

From the 16th to the early 20th century, the structure of the rosary remained essentially unchanged. There were 15 mysteries, one for each of the 15 decades. In the 20th century the addition of the Fatima Prayer to the end of each decade became popular. After Vatican Council II, Msgr. Annibale Bugnini, architect of the liturgical reform, proposed further changes to the structure of the Rosary, but Pope Paul VI refused to implement the proposal on the grounds that changing such a well-established and popular devotion would unsettle the piety of the faithful and show a lack of reverence for an ancient practice. There were thus no other changes until 2002 when John Paul II instituted five new Luminous Mysteries.

. . . Along the way

God calls each of us to specific tasks. This week I learned that God does not so much choose the gifted ones but rather

chooses and then gifts that one.

If this is true, then our excuses for not answering His call are useless. God knows our strengths and our weaknesses. If

despite all that, He chooses us, it can only mean that He has a plan to make us able to do what He asks.

The plan may be to strengthen us, give us wisdom. Or perhaps send us just the companion or resources we need to

work for the goal he is asking of us.

Our response must be the one Mary gave, “Be it done to me as You have said”.

Key or Membership

Just as Father McGivney personal asked men to assist him in establishing his mission, so too must members of our council continue that mission and ask every eligible Cath-olic man in our parish and community to join our council.

A direct result of successful recruiting is our council’s ability to increase it charitable impact in our parish and community.

Please step up and help us achieve our goal this year of 18 new members.

God Bless

FINANCIAL SECRETARY

The financial secretary’s important role is underscored by the fact that he is not elected by the membership but, his appointment – upon the recommendation of the grand knight and trustees – is approved by the supreme knight for a period of three years. His work has a direct effect on council members, his fellow officers, the state council and the Supreme Council.

Basically, the financial secretary’s duties revolve around two key areas of council activities: financial records and membership records. The financial secretary collects and receives all moneys that come into the council from any source. He then turns that money over to the treasurer for deposit in the council account.

One main function of the financial secretary is to collect money, in the form of dues, from members. He sends out billing notices before the start of the billing period and initiates retention measures to prevent members from being suspended for nonpayment of dues.

The compilation of membership records is another of the financial secretary’s important roles. He must ensure that new members sign the constitutional roll of membership at the time of their First Degree. The financial sec-retary also applies to the Supreme Council office for honorary and honorary life membership cards for qualified members.

Besides these two major responsibilities, the financial secretary has several others. They include: handling supply orders for members with the Supreme Council Supply Department; filing the “Report of Officers’’ with the Su-preme Council office; and reporting all membership/insurance transactions to the Supreme Council office in a timely and correct manner.

The Supreme Council also makes available personal computer software and associated reports and supplies to assist financial secretaries to automate record keeping/billing tasks. Information on hardware requirements and ordering information for the software and supplies may be obtained by contacting the Supply Department or the Department of Membership Records.

TREASURER

The treasurer is the elected official in charge of handling all council funds. He receives money from the financial secretary and issues a receipt for such. He is also responsible for depositing all money in the proper council ac-counts and providing a voucher or certificate of deposit to the grand knight for each transaction.

The treasurer is also responsible for issuing payments to the Supreme Council on all assessments made by it to the council and for all orders of the council.

Finally, the treasurer is responsible for keeping accurate accounts of the monies in the general expense fund of the council and the amount of money in any special funds established by the council. He must be able to provide up to-date records on these accounts to the grand knight, financial secretary or board of trustees.
