Before fueling the boat mentally go through a checklist to be sure that you have done the following

Fuel in daylight if possible

Tie your boat securely to the fuel dock

Put out all flames such as cigarettes pipes lamps galley stoves

Shut off engines and any electrical equipment that might create a spark including blowers and radios

Close all windows ports doors and hatches

Have an operable fire extinguisher close by

Have crew and passengers not needed for fueling go ashore

When pumping fuel keep the hose nozzle in contact with the tank or fill pipe to avoid static electricity buildup that could cause a spark

As the operator of your boat you are responsible for the safety of your crew and passengers Don rsquot make sudden changes in direction or speed that can cause them to lose their balance and fall If you have to make a sudden change give a timely warning Always be watchful for boat wakes and waves that can unseat your pas-sengers causing possible injuries Remember to slow down turn into the wake or wave just before you reach it at a forty-five-degree angle then return to your original course after passing through it Never allow anyone to ride in the bow of your boat with legs dangling over the gunwale or sitting straddling

the bow They can easily become unseated by an unexpected wake or wave and thrown overboard and run

over by the boat being mangled or killed by the propeller

When encountering large waves or boat wakes it is usually better not to pound straight into them but to approach at an angle that may vary from 10 to 45 degrees depending on their size For larger waves increas-ing the angle and reducing boat speed may be necessary After passing resume your course and speed Al-ways keep one hand on the wheel and one hand on the throttle to respond to conditions on the water Avoid jumping off of waves at high speed and making a hard landing which could injure people on board or damage the boat A slower speed with give a softer ride in rough water
