47th eDITION 21-24 october 2021

The 47th edition of FIAC will take place for the first time at the Grand Palais Ephémère on the Champ-de-Mars, from 21 to 24 October 2021.

Designed to host exhibitions, fairs, fashion shows and sporting events usually held at the Grand Palais until the reopening of the Nave and the adjoining galleries for the Olympic Games in 2024, the Grand Palais Ephémère will also host the judo and wrestling competitions for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, as well as Parajudo and Wheelchair Rugby events of the Paralympic Games.

Designed by architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte as the expression of urban challenges of the 21st century, the Grand Palais Ephémère is the example of a new, sustainable, agile and eco-responsible architecture. It blends harmoniously into the surroundings of the Champ-de-Mars, and reflects the history of this site, in direct continuity with the role it fulfilled during the great World Exhibitions of the 19th and early 20th centuries.

An edifice with a surface area of 10 000 square metres, the Grand Palais Ephémère was built to reflect the original Parisian monument, around a principal nave comprising forty-four sustainably sourced wooden archways, enveloped in a fully recyclable transparent web.

As an extension of the Grand Palais Ephémère, FIAC is delighted to invest the Galerie Eiffel, an additional wing, installed on the Champ-de-Mars on the Eiffel Tower side. Together, the Grand Palais Ephémère and the Galerie Eiffel will form a prestigious setting, combining tradition and modernity, to host this great celebration of international creation.

INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERS

The Réunion des musées nationaux - Grand Palais (Rmn - Grand Palais) is a cultural operator whose mission is to promote access to culture throughout France and beyond. The Rmn - Grand Palais has top level expertise in the artistic and cultural sphere: production of exhibitions, receiving the public, engagement, art history courses, publishing, management of museum shops and publication of cultural products, art studios, photo agency, acquisition of works of art for French collections, cultural engineering, digital innovation… This expertise enables it to play a unique role in the world of culture and pursue its prime ambition: enable as many people as possible to interact with art from all cultures, eras and in all its forms. The Grand Palais, in Paris, which is scheduled to undergo major renovation work in 2021, is the emblem of the establishment: the Rmn - Grand Palais deploys its multi-faceted expertise in the Grand Palais producing large exhibitions and organizing cultural events. The Rmn - Grand Palais places this expertise at the service of ambitious cultural projects in Paris, in the Musée du Luxembourg and all over France.

As a long-standing partner of the FIAC, the City of Paris provides continuing support for artistic creation and artists. In 2020 and 2021, the City has granted the Fonds d’art contemporain-Paris Collections an exceptional acquisitions budget as a demonstration of its commitment to artists.

At Fiac, the Fonds d’art contemporain, which is the only public collection on display at this major art fair, displays the latest acquisitions of the collection. The Fonds d’art contemporain’s actions aim at democratizing access to contemporary works of art by displaying its collection in places where everyday life takes place, with specific actions towards younger audiences with “the Fonds d’art contemporain goes to school” program and the new « Young Collectors » program created for middle School pupils. Partnerships with actors in the field of social policy have been built since 2016.

The Louvre is happy to once again be one of the privileged partners of FIAC. From Thursday October 21 to Sunday October 24, 2021, the national domain of the Louvre and the Tuileries, within the framework of the Hors les Murs Programme , presents to its visitors a selection of twenty unpublished works. The public will be able to discover emerging or confirmed artists in particular Eric Fischl, Norbert Kricke, Laurent Le Deunff and Marion Verboom. All these forms interact with the prestigious setting of the garden, confronting the statues and fountains of this open-air museum. The Eugène-Delacroix National Museum is taking part in the Hors les murs by giving carte blanche to the young artist, Jean Claracq, who will make his work resonate at the heart of the studio.

The museum network of the City of ParisGathered together within the public establishment Paris Musée since 2013, the 14 museums and heritage sites of the City of Paris bring together collections that are remarkable for their diversity and quality. They offer temporary exhibitions throughout the year and pay particular attention to audiences far removed from the cultural offers. The museums of the City of Paris also benefit from an exceptional built heritage: mansions in the heart of historic districts, palaces built for universal exhibitions and artist studios. These are all assets that make museums exceptional places preserved thanks to a renovation plan initiated in 2015 by the City of Paris.Since 2016, the Petit Palais and FIAC have forged very strong links thanks to FIAC PROJECTS. Large-format works were exhibited in the exceptional setting of the historic spaces of the Petit Palais and on the pedestrianized esplanade facing the Grand Palais. This year, despite the geographical distance from FIAC, the Petit Palais wished to reaffirm its commitment to contemporary artists by inviting Jean-Michel Othoniel with his Theorem of Narcissus, bringing together 70 works in the museum’s collections. This is the artist’s most important solo exhibition since My Way at the Center Pompidou in 2011.The Board of Directors of Paris Musée is chaired by Carine Rolland, Deputy to the Mayor of Paris in charge of culture and the fifteen-minute-city initiative. Afaf Gabelotaud, who is Deputy to the Mayor of Paris in charge of Business, Employment and Economic Development, is vice-president.Find more information on the museum activities, discover their collections (free for all visitors) and prepare your visit on: parismusees.paris.fr/en

It was in 2010 that FIAC and the École du Louvre joined forces for their first, unprecedented mediation operation designed for FIAC Hors-les-Murs audiences. Over the course of eleven editions, over one thousand students from the École du Louvre have participated in this special event, designed to help several hundreds of thousands of visitors, professionals, art lovers, curious passers-by, adults and children of all nationalities and from all walks of life to explore contemporary art. This year, the École du Louvre is FIAC’s partner more than ever and participates in FIAC Hors les Murs, with its exhibition programme of monumental artworks in public space, and installations within a museum context. In the Jardin des Tuileries, on Place Vendôme and in the musée Eugène Delacroix, around thirty projects will be brought together and each artwork will be presented with commentary provided daily by young art historians from the École du Louvre, from 21 to 24 October 2021, from 3 to 5:30 pm.Designed as a pedagogical exercise ‘in real time’, this mediation operation falls within the practical applications of the school’s training. It is supervised by the contemporary art teachers and a team of other staff members. For this 2021 edition, over one hundred students will once again be faced with the various phases that constitute a mediation project (conception, research, documentation, texts, contact with galleries, meetings with artists, practical mediation techniques, analyse, feedback, etc.) and will conclude this operation by writing a text signed and included within the FIAC online catalogue.A special time and place to discover French and international creation, this major event in the month of October also enables the school to reaffirm its ongoing involvement in the study, research, and communication of contemporary art, one of the thirty-one specialised disciplines offered to the students from the first cycle of the École through to doctoral level.Founded in 1882, a public establishment under the aegis of the French Ministry of Culture, located in the Palais du Louvre, the École du Louvre is an institute of higher learning that provides classes in art history, archaeology, epigraphy, the history of civilisations, anthropology, and museology. To its 1 600 students, it presents a cursus of three academic cycles (Bachelor-Masters-Doctorate) and two preparatory classes (competitive examinations for heritage curators and restorers). The École du Louvre also allows unregistered students (more than 20 000 are enrolled) to access certain classes designed for the students and take specific day or night classes over summer, in the regions, with discovery cycles and junior classes for children also available.A place of study open to the world, supported by its many national and international partnerships and a thriving research team, the École du Louvre also hosts conferences, workshops, and seminars, while also publishing manuals, specialised books, and an online research magazine.

Ricard Prize, which rewards an artist under the age of 40 with the purchase of a work offered to the Centre Pompidou and support for an international project. Since 2020, the Pernod Ricard Foundation Prize has also been conceived as a year-long companionship with the artists selected by the guest curator. The Pernod Ricard Foundation promotes and hosts a variety of formats and uses that complement each other : exhibitions and cycles nurture the book selection for the bookshop, the bookshop can extend the current exhibition, the café can host a talk with an artist or a book presentation, etc.). The Collector’s Edition Boxes: Sharing Contemporary ArtLab’Bel, the Artistic Laboratory of Bel Group launched in 2014 an impressive series of collaborations with major contemporary artists, each of whom will design a not-to-be-missed Collector’s Edition Box in celebration of The Laughing Cow®’s 100th anniversary in 2021. These collaborations continue the special rapport that has always existed between the brand and the artists who have used it as a source of inspiration for nearly a century. Each Collector’s Edition Box is an original work of art in its own right, made available to collectors at the standard retail price. Each of them presents consumers with a choice: to eat the content or leave them unopened to preserve its aesthetic value.By bringing contemporary art to the broadest audience possible in a way that’s both original and offbeat, the Collector’s Edition Box project epitomizes the philosophy of Lab’Bel since its creation in 2010. Following Hans-Peter Feldmann, Thomas Bayrle, Jonathan Monk, Wim Delvoye, Karin Sander, Daniel Buren and Mel Bochner, it’s now the turn of German artist Rosemarie Trockel to create the 8th Collector’s Edition Box. This edition will be presented to public for the first time in FIAC 2021, partner of the project since 2016.
