This booklet provides you with some information and procedures that will help you to settle into Grange
Schools. For more information please contact staff.
We hope that the time you and your family spend with us will be happy and rewarding.
Our School is a Foundation to Year 7 (F-7) school with a Principal, Deputy Principal and Assistant Principal
We are proud of the community spirit and the partnership we have with our parents to provide the best
possible education for students. Our school is a vibrant, enjoyable and positive learning community.
Grange Schools has been serving the educational needs of children in the western suburbs of Adelaide for
over 100 years. It is widely recognised throughout the metropolitan area as a school, which provides a
friendly, caring, secure, environment offering quality education where children develop self discipline, a
strong desire to learn and be successful.
Staff at this school work hard to maintain and develop a parent/teacher partnership in the education of your
child to his/her full potential. This booklet should offer you some insight into what occurs at Grange. We are
committed not only to sharing successes but also in the joint responsibility in developing your child.

BEGINNING SCHOOL
The first year of school is called Foundation.
There is now only one intake per school year.
Children who turn five years of age before 1st May
will commence at the beginning of the school year.
Students who turn five years of age after 1st May 2
will start school at the beginning of the following
year.
The Department of Education and Child
Development, (DECD) Early Years Policy supports
the value and significance of the early years at
school and provides time for children to develop
naturally and acquire positive attitudes to school.
Foundation students are automatically assessed by
trained staff to ascertain their gross motor
coordination skills. This involves a ½ hour test of
their ability to hop, jump, skip, run, balance, etc. If
your child is assessed as requiring additional skill
development you will be notified in writing.
ENROLMENT PROCEDURES
Children within our zone have automatic entry into
Grange Primary School, as do siblings.
In the compulsory years of schooling (from Yr 1-yr
6) we will accept students in year levels outside the
zone if we have spaces available. This depends on
numbers at that point in time. In accepting students
from outside the zone it is important that balancing
the gender ratio be addressed. Preference for
enrolment will be given by proximity to the school,
and special circumstances. Out of Zone Enrolments
are usually accepted at the beginning of a school
year.
Early enrolment of your child gives the school a
better picture of its numbers for the following year.
Just before enrolling in kindergarten is a good time
to also enrol for school.
Enrolment forms can be obtained from the
enrolment officer in the front office.
Prior to starting school, letters will be sent detailing
transition times and dates for starting school.
HINTS ABOUT TRANSFERRING FROM
OTHER SCHOOLS.
When transferring students from other schools, it is
always helpful to undertake a tour of the school.
Please don’t hesitate to contact the Principal to
arrange this information session.
Also importantly talk to the front office staff about
school fees, school procedures, etc and they will
enlighten you with some of the administration
information that you may need to know. Enrolment
forms are obtained from the front office.
Once starting at Grange, our administration will
forward a transfer advice to your child’s previous
school and they will transfer your child’s student
records.
School fees are not transferred between schools.
TRANSITION TO SCHOOL FOR
FOUNDATION CHILDREN FROM PRE-
SCHOOLS
Children normally have transition visits prior to
commencing school: (number is determined with
the school)
All new Foundation parents are invited to a new
reception meeting prior to when their students are
due to start.
What can we do to ease children’s transition to
school?
1. The personality of the teacher is central to a
child’s feelings about school. (We encourage
you to get to know your child’s teacher as a
person).

2. Being with ‘old friends’ is important.
3. The behaviour of other children is likely to be
the single most important factor in causing
children anxiety about school. (Reassure your
child that s/he has the right to feel safe and that
the teacher is there to help).
4. Some children feel a general anxiety because
they don’t know what is expected of them.
‘Why can’t I play with friends in other classes
now?’
‘Why do I have to ask to go to the toilet?’
‘Why can’t I go outside when I want to?’
We explain procedures but you can help too.
They may be worried about getting lost, or being in
the wrong place at the wrong time.
‘What is the bell for?’
‘What does recess time mean?’
Together we can help your child understand school
life.
BADGES
All new Foundation students are provided with a
name badge. They are expected to wear them for a
term. Other staff then recognise that your child is
new to school and can provide additional support if
required.
WHAT CAN THE TEACHER LEARN FROM
YOU?
We believe that it is important for parents
/caregivers to learn what the teacher knows about
how your child is doing at school.
It is just as important that the teacher learns from
you about your child outside the school. This will
help the teacher understand your child.
Here are some things you might want to tell the
teacher:

What you feel your child’s areas of

Your child’s involvement in activities like
Scouts, church groups, etc
Health problems, which may affect your
child. All health problems need to be
discussed to determine whether a health plan
needs to be developed

How well your child gets along with other
family members and friends
What activities your child likes/dislikes
ATTENDANCE Regular and punctual attendance increases the
likelihood of success in learning. Students who
have poor patterns of attendance are at risk of not
achieving their educational, social or psychological
potential. It is, therefore, important that you support
your child to attend school regularly and on time.
If your child is absent, please advise us by phone
with the reason. A written explanation in the
student diary or on notepaper is also advisable.
If your child is unwell it is important to keep your
child at home. Children who are unwell cannot
concentrate on learning and may pass the bug onto
others.

ACCIDENTS
If an accident happens to your child, an attempt will
be made to contact you immediately. It is very
important, therefore, the school has up-to-date
information about where you or another person
whom you nominate, can be contacted during the
day.
In the case of serious accidents, an ambulance will
be called immediately, at the discretion of the
school staff.
APPOINTMENTS WITH STAFF
Making an appointment to discuss issues
concerning your child avoids inconvenience to
either parent or teacher. It is not always convenient
or appropriate to hold discussions when the teacher
is supervising students. Making an appointment to
talk with the Principal, Deputy or Assistant
Principal is also advisable.
ARRIVAL TIME AND LATENESS
It is very important that students arrive on time for
school each day. Students may arrive at 8.30a.m.
when teachers are on duty and enter their
classrooms at 8.40a.m. when the bell rings. This
enables the day to get off to a good start. Students
are given information from the Daily Blurb and
often collaboratively plan the day’s activities. The
roll book is also marked at this time and teachers
are required to record all episodes of lateness.
EARLY LEAVING
If you need to take your child out of school early,
they must be signed out electronically at the front
office. You will be given a printed early departure
slip to take to your child’s teacher.
If you return with your child later, they need to be
signed back in electronically at the front office,
once again being issued with a ‘return’ slip which
also goes to the class teacher for their class
attendance records and also enables the school to be
sure of all students’ whereabouts throughout the
day.
EARLY DISMISSAL
Children are dismissed one hour early on the last
day of each term and at Easter time if it falls outside
of the end of Term 1
ASSEMBLIES
Assemblies are held throughout the term for F-2, 3-
7 and F-7 groupings. Classes take responsibility for
running assemblies and they present a variety of
work and activities. Days & Times are advertised
in the yearly planner.
Parents/caregivers are welcome to attend.
BADGES
At Grange Primary School the staff members all
wear a school name badge. We also have badges for
visitors who come to the school. If you are in the
school for any length of time, please come along to
the Front Office or sign in at your classroom and
receive your badge. The purpose of the badges is to
allow children to identify people who are authorised
to be on the school property.
BANKING
To encourage good saving habits, Bank SA
provides a coupon book system for banking at
Grange Primary School. Application forms are
available at the front office.
Bank Day is every Wednesday.
BICYCLE RULES
Students may bring bicycles to school and place
them in the bike racks. The bike rack areas are
locked in the morning and unlocked at the end of
the day. Children must ride their bikes in a safe
manner near the school and must walk their bikes in
the school yard and surrounding footpaths. (See
NOTE below). Students must wear a helmet
when riding a bike. The consequence for not
following these rules will be Time-Out.

footpaths in the above zone between 8a.m. and

CANTEEN
We are very proud of the fact that our canteen is run
with the support of parent/caregiver volunteers.
Nutritious lunches can be ordered daily from the
canteen. A current price list is sent home regularly.
If your child forgets their lunch or lunch order they
will be sent to the canteen to order lunch.
An account will be given to your child and we ask
that payment be made the next day. It is suggested
that children do not bring excessive amounts of
spending money. Usually $1 or $2 is adequate.
Junior Primary students eat their lunches from
approx 12.35p.m. and Primary students begin eating
at 12.45p.m. with the supervision of the class
teacher.

CLASS NEWSLETTER
These will be sent home at the beginning of each
term. The purpose of class newsletters is to inform
parents about the work, which will be covered by
the class, and about other notable class activities.

CARS AND ROAD SAFETY
We are so concerned about
traffic problems near the school
that we appeal to parents who pick up students from
school to examine their driving habits. Double
parking, U-turns in Jetty and Surrey Street, parking
in NO PARKING zones are some of the unsafe
practices regularly observed. Such practices could
easily result in injury or death.
Please do not use either car park as a pick up or
drop off zone, as this can be very dangerous for
pedestrians and drivers alike.
We ask that all pedestrians use the lights and emu
crossing.
New road rules came into force on Wednesday 1
December 1999. They come under the Road Traffic
(Road Rules – Ancillary and Miscellaneous
Provisions) Regulations 1999.
The relevant rules are:
1. Contravene No Stopping Sign – this is similar
to the old No Standing zone. It is an offence to
become stationary/stop for any time period.
This offence applies to signed areas with:
2. Stop on Continuous Yellow Edge Line
- as above, but marked by a yellow line.
3. Contravene No Parking sign (over 2
minutes) – This zone may only be used for
the immediate pick up or set down of goods
or passengers. By leaving a vehicle or
sitting in a vehicle, waiting for a
child/passenger to come out, longer than
two minutes, constitutes an offence. This
offence applies to signed areas with:

off passengers, but not block driveways for
extended periods.

SCHOOL UNIFORM
It is expected that all children will wear the dress
code.
We believe that a school dress code contributes to:
whole school unity and individual feelings of
self worth through such unity
the provision of a supportive school
environment by reducing levels of competitive

the realisation of social justice by relieving
parents of pressures to purchase high cost brand
name clothing for school wear
positive visibility of Grange Schools in the
wider community
Therefore we will support the wearing of school
uniform and conformity with a dress code by:

bucket) are available from the front office and
children will be required to wear one of these school
hats.
No hat means ... no play. Children will be
allowed to sit in the shade outside Lawson Hall.
Summer Footwear
When selecting summer footwear
for your child to wear to school,
ensure that it will provide
protection from injury during sport
and play time activities. Thongs
and beach sandals do not provide foot care and
protection. These should not be worn.
CLOTHING
The school policy is that in the summer months,
children should wear clothing, which provides some
protection from the sun. As a result, children
should not wear the following to school: singlets,
muscle shirts, brief shorts or summer dresses with
little or no protection around the shoulders or neck.
We ask parents to support this policy.

NUMBERS
Up to date contact information (home and work) is
important for us to contact an adult in an
emergency. This information is requested upon
enrolment. Please notify us of any changes during
the year.

FEES
School fees for the following year are issued in
December to enable parents as much time as
possible to budget for payment. These are made up
of a materials and service fee, swimming and
excursion fees.
A composite fee is charged. It is used, together
with DECD grants, to provide your child with text
books, educational materials, apparatus and
equipment in all subjects during the course of study
at the school.
Stationery and duplicating materials are provided
throughout the year. Excursions and either
Swimming or Aquatics are also covered by these
fees.
Parents in financial difficulty may apply to have
school fees paid by the Government. Enquiries may
be made at the front office. School fees may be
paid by cash, EFTPOS, PAYWAY into our bank
account, in two instalments or by other
arrangements with front office. Parents are asked to
pay fees the week prior to school commencing.
HARASSMENT
Our aim is to develop and foster an environment,
which is free from harassment. We strive to:

appreciation of other cultures
encourage a co-operative, non-aggressive
environment where successful conflict
resolution strategies are used
We have a successful policy and a set of grievance
procedures, which are actively taught in classrooms.
HEAD LICE
Anyone can catch head lice. It is not a sign of poor
personal hygiene. It is important to treat them
properly and safely when they occur. There is an
abundance of information regarding head lice on the
web, or alternatively, visit your chemist who will
advise you on the various treatments available
Please inform the class teacher when head lice are
detected so that all members of the class can be
notified and action taken.
HOMEWORK POLICY
The following is a summary of the policy. More
details can be found on the school website.
Homework will be related to the range of learning
activities with which children are involved at
school. As a result, a variety of homework
activities will be set and may include - reading,
reporting, interviewing, collecting, researching,
written assignments, art activities...

NOTE: - It is important that children should not work longer
than the maximum time if frustrated or tired. In
such cases, parents should write a note of
explanation in their child’s diary.
Children may choose to work for longer periods
providing they are enjoying the homework activity.
It is important for children to be involved in some
activities other than homework after school.
HOT WEATHER
The school is now fully air-conditioned so children
remain at school until 3.05p.m.

LEARNING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (LAP)
The Learning Assistance Program is one which
aims to support a child through development of self
esteem and confidence, relying not only on parents
in the school community, but people in the wider
community to lend their time and talents for the
support of these children.
What we aim to achieve through this program is:
greater community participation
students accessing one to one support with a
volunteer to develop self esteem and confidence
building on what students can do
building bridges between students, teachers,
parents and the wider community
At Grange Schools you may see an adult and
student reading quietly, playing a game or using the
computers, enjoying cooking or taking a walk
around the school grounds, chatting, smiling,
relaxing having fun and enjoying themselves – this
is LAP.
LEAVING SCHOOL AT LUNCH TIME
Unless children bring a note from home giving
permission for them to go home for lunch, students
stay within the school grounds for the whole day.
LOST PROPERTY
Lost property is held in the containers under the
stairs near the office. It is displayed at the end of
each term and if not claimed, sent to charity.
Second hand uniform items are also available for
sale at a stall run in Term 1. Notification of this
stall is advised in the school newsletter.
To ensure the safe return of any of your child’s
garments, please label all items with a laundry
marker.
MEDICATION
Medication will not be administered to students by
staff. If your child requires antibiotics three times a
day, this can be given at home before school, when
the child returns home from school and just before
bedtime.
However, if your child has ongoing medical
problems such as asthma, diabetes, etc. you will
need to see the front office staff to ensure that a
Health Plan is put in place for your child.
Generally older students with asthma can accept
responsibility for puffers providing their Asthma
Care and Medication Plans are in place.
The school has a Drug Policy in place, which
includes reference to medication.
NEWSLETTERS
The school newsletter is distributed fortnightly on
Thursday and is taken home by the youngest student
in each family. The newsletter contains a lot of
information about the school, its policies, events,
achievements, meeting dates and educational
matters.
OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS CARE AND
VACATION CARE
The Grange Primary School Out of School Hours
Care Program (OSHC) aims to provide quality
recreational care for all school age children in a
warm, safe and comfortable environment while
parents work, study or have respite.
A full day program is offered to children at Grange
Schools during the school holidays.
It is run by the Out of School Hours Care program
workers. Information is provided about four weeks
before the end of each term.
The hours are as follows:
Before School: 7:00a.m. – 8:45a.m.
After School: 3:05p.m. – 6:00p.m.
.
Vacation Care: 7:00a.m. – 6:00p.m.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
There are many ways parents/caregivers can help
and contribute to the learning process:
classroom – class teachers will ask for specific
help in a range of classroom activities,
excursions or camps.
school – we have an active Learning Assistance
Program (LAP), many council sub committees,
working bees – parents are asked to help in
maintaining our grounds.

These groups have a social focus and a sharing
of information about learning
Governing Council – is a major decision-
making body in the school. Elections are held
at the Annual General Meeting currently held in
Term 1 each year. You may attend any council
meeting as an observer or volunteer your
services at any time.
You may nominate to be on any of the sub-
committees. They include:

REPORTING TO PARENTS
Parents and teachers are partners in the educative
process. We need to develop positive relationships
and interact frequently to share information we have
about your child.
Teachers facilitate this process by:
chatting informally
planned teacher/parent discussions
notes, phone calls to parents
sending home samples of children’s
work/products
actively involving parents in the classroom
classroom newsletters etc.
Formal reporting procedures include:
Term 1: Meet the Teacher Night. Teachers
provide information about the
classroom learning program.
R-7 Interviews
Term 2: Summative Written Report
Term 3: Interviews upon teacher or parent
request.
Term 4: Parents receive a written
summative report of their child’s
achievements.
Interviews consist of teachers providing information
to parents about skills, knowledge and the child’s
attitude. Teachers also seek information from
parents. Many of the classes have 3-way interviews
with students leading the process.
Of course parents can ask for an interview at any
time throughout the year.
Teachers manage and negotiate the times for
interviews with parents.
RESOURCE CENTRE
The Resource Centre staff welcomes you to call in
at any time and are happy to assist with any
enquiries regarding your child’s reading.
We specialise in high quality, popular literature for
all students.
Relevant, informative and appealing non-fiction
materials are carefully selected to support the
teaching of information skills for students R-7.
The students have supervised access to the Internet
during class time. Six online computers in the
Resource Centre’s ‘Techno Suite’ are available to
students at lunch time, before and after school and
provide equitable access to all students R-7.
GOVERNING COUNCIL
The Governing Council is a legally incorporated
body and is a vehicle for consultation, coordination
and cooperation, to ensure that the best possible
decisions are made for children. It has an equal
partnership with staff and leadership in developing
policy and ensuring quality learning for all students.

SCHOOL RULES
To make sure that Grange Primary School is safe
and enjoyable for children and adults, the following
rules are needed:
CARE FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY
Arrive after 8.30am and leave by 3.20pm Follow staff member’s instructions
People will walk inside, around buildings and
on stairs. They will not use corridors, stairs or
toilets for play.
Running games may only be played on marked
courts and ovals. Kicking of balls is only
allowed on the ovals.
CARE FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHERS
Care For Each Other-Make Our School Harassment Free
Play in appropriate areas- Front of school Year-2 only-
no running around buildings
CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT Eating is not permitted on the oval during play times. Place litter in the bins provided.
Children wear hats during playtime or be asked to sit
quietly in the Designated No Hat Areas.

The following must not be brought to school by children.

after 3.40 p.m. unless with an adult/staff member
· bike racks unless parking or collecting bikes
· front of school (unless walking through) for years 3-
7 students
· large rubbish bin area without permission
SPORTS
F-3 children receive specialist
P.E. lessons over the year. F-7
participate in our annual Games
Day in Term 4. Students from
4-7 have the opportunity to participate in
competitive sport on Friday afternoons and
Saturday morning. See Sports Brochure for details.
SPORTS TEAMS AVAILABLE
The school provides Football teams on Saturday
mornings in Terms 2 and 3, Cricket and Softball in
Terms 1 and 4, Soccer in Terms 2 and 3, Netball &
Basketball all year. All of these sporting bodies are
comprised of parents who volunteer their time to
coach, manage and organise the programs.
SPORTS DAY/GAMES DAY
Once a year, generally in Term 4, the whole school
participates in Games Day. Students come to school
at the normal time on that day (8.45a.m.) and are
dismissed at 3.05p.m.when the day concludes. Each
class is involved in a series of different activities
and the day culminates with team and individual
races. It is a real team builder and lots of fun and
excitement for the students.
SWIMMING
F-2 swimming occurs in Term 4. Lessons are taken
at the Thebarton Aquatic Centre or the Adelaide
Aquatics Centre.
Year 3-4 swimming occurs during Term 3.
Year 5 Surf Safety during Term 1
Year 6-7 Aquatics occur during Term 1.
The cost of swimming is included as part of the
school fees package.

SCHOOL CLOSURE /STUDENT FREE DAYS
The Governing Council grant one day a year as a
school closure. This day usually occurs in Show
Week, staff and students do not attend on this day.
The Governing Council and DECD also approves
four pupil free days per year. Students do not attend
on this day, but staff attends professional
development sessions either here at the school or at
an alternative venue. This gives the staff an
opportunity to attend training and development on a
whole staff basis focussing on the school priorities.
These five days throughout the year will be
advertised in the Newsletter & School Planner and
the Out of School Hours Care program will be
available.
