Steeped in over 300 years of heritage, Grantley Hall wasbuilt by Thomas Norton and his son Fletcher Norton, firstBaron Grantley, in the 17th century, based on a Palladiandesign by English architect Isaac Ware. Over the years, theproperty became firmly established on the British countryretreat scene, welcoming high profile guests includingQueen Mary and the Princess Royal, prominentinternational businessmen, politicians and society families.

Grantley Hall’s 1910 Japanese garden has been added

to Historic England’s National Heritage List, whichincludes 400,000 of England’s most important places. LadyJane Furness was a keen gardener, and she commissionedthe installation of the Japanese garden – the first of its kindever planted in England – around 1910. Formed by rocksbrought across from the Brimham Rocks estate, the gardenfeatures two ponds linked by a stream with large, irregularstepping stones; diverse trees, mosses, ferns and bamboo;and Japanese stone lanterns, one of which can still beseen.
