The sight of the Pope on his knees moved him. He asked himself how much he trusted Our Lady: “I became aware of the density of the words of the Mother of Guadalupe to St. Juan Diego: “Don’t be afraid, am I not perhaps your mother?” From that day, he said fifteen decades of the Rosary daily. The mystery of the Resurrection fills us with great hopeful expectation. Death does not have the final word. Our life does not end at the grave, and we can say with St. Paul, “O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting?” (I Corinthians 15:55). The mystery of the Ascension of our Lord reminds us to rely on the peace which Christ offers us. Shortly before His ascension He tells us, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27). Here He warns us that the peace the world offers does not satisfy. We need to remain detached from earthly possessions which do not ultimately satisfy — we were made for Heaven. This mystery of the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost encourages us to place our faith in Him as we evangelise those in our lives who are far off from him. Meditating upon the mystery of the Assumption of Mary into heaven gives us a glimpse at “what God has prepared for those who love him” (I Corinthians 2:9) and consequently fills us with hopeful expectation. Mary, after all, is the prototypical Christian. What God has done for her He will one day do for us. If we accept salvation and persevere, we will be cleansed of sin and given glorified bodies. With the mystery of the coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and of Earth, Mary intercedes on behalf of her spiritual children, the Church. This mystery encourages us to entrust themselves and their good works to the only perfect creature, the Mother of God. THE HOLY ROSARY

The Glorious Mysteries

Pope Francis’s confidence in Our Lady developed when, in 1985, he attended a rosary that was being led by Pope John Paul II. The next Trinitarians Youth Ministry meeting will be held this Friday, 25 October, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the parish office next to Holy Family Church. We will continue talking about the Holy Mass—the different parts of the Mass and their meaning and significance. All those in year 7 and above, including young adul ts , are welcome to attend (anyone under 18 will need to have their parent or guardian sign them in and sign them out). And we wish all those who are beginning their HSC exams the very best. We pray that Our Lord and the Blessed Virgin Mary, Seat of Wisdom, will guide them through these weeks to encourage them and to assist them so that they may have confidence.

Holy Rosary on the Anniversary of the Miracle of Fatima

We extend our thanks to Gerry Pinto and the many parishioners and visitors who joined us last Saturday for the praying of the Holy Rosary before the Vigil Mass. October is traditionally the month of the Holy Rosary and to honour this, and to commemorate the anniversary of the Miracle of Fatima which is remembered on October 13, we came together as a community offering the prayer of the Holy Rosary. As Pope St. Pius X once said, “The Rosary is the most beautiful and the most rich in graces of all prayers; it is the prayer that touches most the Heart of the Mother of God… and if you wish peace to reign in your homes, recite the family Rosary.”

Additional Weekday Time for the Sacrament of Penance

From Wednesday, 23 October there will be an additional time for the Sacrament of Penance from 6:30 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. at Holy Family Church. This is in addition to the times already available on Saturdays from 5:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. at Holy Trinity Church and on Sundays from 4:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. at Holy Family Church.

This will form, when it is possible, part of the devotions on Wednesday evenings. Beginning at 6:00 p.m. with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, as we pray for the Plenary Council 2020, and the holy Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Following this additional time for confessions Benediction will be given to conclude these devotions. This expands once again the chance for the Sacrament of Penance and for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the parish so join us and seek the graces of almighty God offered by these spiritual works.

CATHOLIC Trivia

St. Genesius

There is a patron saint for everything and everyone, even clowns. And that’s St. Genesius, a Roman martyr of the 3rd century. In his earlier life he was a comedian and actor who performed in plays that mocked Christianity. According to legend, whi le performing in a play that made fun of baptism, he had an experience on stage that converted him. He proclaimed his new belief, and he steadfastly refused to renounce it, even when the emperor Diocletian ordered him to do so. He is also the patron saint of actors, comedians, and lawyers. His feast day is 25 August.

The Blessed Virgin Mary

971 “All generations will call me blessed”: “The Church's devotion to the Blessed Virgin is intrinsic to Christian worship.” The Church rightly honours “the Blessed Virgin with special devotion. From the most ancient times the Blessed Virgin has been honoured with the title of ‘Mother of God,’ to whose protection the faithful fly in all their dangers and needs.

This very special devotion differs essentially from the adoration which is given to the incarnate Word and equally to the Father and the Holy Spirit, and greatly fosters this adoration.” The liturgical feasts dedicated to the Mother of God and Marian prayer, such as the rosary, an “epitome of the whole Gospel,” express this devotion to the Virgin Mary.

972 In [Mary] we contemplate what the Church already is in her mystery on her own “pilgrimage of faith,” and what she will be in the homeland at the end of her journey. There, “in the glory of the Most Holy and Undivided Trinity,” “in the communion of all the saints,” the Church is awaited by the one she venerates as Mother of her Lord and as her own mother.

Ask almost anyone and they will tell you that Catholics are no longer required to abstain from meat or perform some other penance on Fridays throughout the year.  However, the current Code of Canon Law states that, with the exception of solemnities, “All Fridays through the year and the time of Lent are penitential days and times throughout the entire Church” (c. 1250).  Furthermore, “Abstinence from eating meat or another food according to the prescriptions of the conference of bishops is to be observed on Fridays throughout the year unless they are solemnities” (c. 1251). In Australia, the bishops have declared that it is permissible to substitute some other form of penance, but we are still urged to f a s t f r o m “ s o m e t h i n g ” i n remembrance of the Lord’s death on the cross. So whether it be giving up meat or something else remember to give up something on Fridays.

First Reading The Book of Exodus (17:8-13)

The Amalekites came and attacked Israel at Rephidim. Moses said to Joshua, ‘Pick out men for yourself, and tomorrow morning march out to engage Amalek. I, meanwhile, will stand on the hilltop, the staff of God in my hand.’ Joshua did as Moses told him and marched out to engage Amalek, while Moses and Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the hill. As long as Moses kept his arms raised, Israel had the advantage; when he let his arms fall, the advantage went to Amalek. But Moses arms grew heavy, so they took a stone and put it under him and on this he sat, Aaron and Hur supporting his arms, one on one side, one on the other; and his arms remained firm till sunset. With the edge of the sword Joshua cut down Amalek and his people.

Responsorial Psalm (Ps 120. ℟. v. 2)

℟. Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains: from where shall come my help? My help shall come from the Lord

who made heaven and earth. ℟.

May he never allow you to stumble! Let him sleep not, your guard. No, he sleeps not nor slumbers,

Israel’s guard. ℟.

The Lord is your guard and your shade; at your right side he stands. By day the sun shall not smite you

nor the moon in the night. ℟.

The Lord will guard you from evil, he will guard your soul. The Lord will guard your going and coming

both now and for ever. ℟.

Second Reading The Second Letter of St. Paul to Timothy (3:14-4:2)

You must keep to what you have been taught and know to be true; remember who your teachers were, and how, ever since you were a child, you have known the holy scriptures – from these you can learn the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and can profitably be used for teaching, for refuting error, for guiding people’s lives and teaching them to be holy. This is how the man who is dedicated to God becomes fully equipped and ready for any good work.

Before God and before Christ Jesus who is to be judge of the living and the dead, I put this duty to you, in the name of his Appearing and of his kingdom: proclaim the message and, welcome or unwelcome, insist on it. Refute falsehood, correct error, call to obedience—but do all with patience and with the intention of teaching.

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia! The word of God is living and active; it probes the thoughts and motives of our heart. Alleluia!

Gospel of Luke (18:1-8)

Jesus told his disciples a parable about the need to pray continually and never lose heart. ‘There was a judge in a certain town’ he said ‘who had neither fear of God nor respect for man. In the same town there was a widow who kept on coming to him and saying, “I want justice from you against my enemy!” For a long time he refused, but at last he said to himself, “Maybe I have neither fear of God nor respect for man, but since she keeps pestering me I must give this widow her just rights, or she will persist in coming and worry me to death.”’ And the Lord said, ‘You notice what the unjust judge has to say? Now will not God see justice done to his chosen who cry to him day and night even when he delays to help them? I promise you, he will see justice done to them, and done speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find any faith on earth?’
