PRINCIPALS REPORT Term 1 2017 has been another successful term
for Granville South Creative and Performing Arts
High School. We have welcomed new students
to the school, including year 7, celebrated
Harmony Day, participated in several
community partnership programs, run fund
raising BBQ’s at Bunnings, run a year 11
overnight camp, and welcomed many guests to
our school.
Year 12 now have only 2 terms until they have
finished school, so I encourage them to focus on
completing all of their required work, to ensure
they are successful in their HSC. Our 2016 year
12 students have now started at University
(31%), TAFE (12%), or employment. We
congratulate them on their success.
We are continuing this year with involvement in
many programs delivered by community
organisations and have added new partnerships,
including Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs and
PCYC. These programs provide students with
opportunities that we cannot offer at school,
assisting in education and student wellbeing.
This year we welcome new staff, including Ms
Dee Saed Al-Deen, as Community Liaison
Officer. She will introduce herself to parents
later in this newsletter and is available on
Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
On Friday 24th February we were visited by our
school Executive Director, Ms Jane Simmons and
on Monday 27th March we hosted a Federation
of Parents and Citizens Association of New
South Wales event, which included Principals,
Parents and Community Liaison Officers from
many schools, as well as special guests. We
were delighted to welcome the new NSW
Minister for Education, the Honourable Rob
Stokes to our school. Both of these occasions
gave us the opportunity to showcase the
amazing talent of our students and the
wonderful work that we are doing to support
the learning and wellbeing needs of our
students.
To improve educational opportunities and the
learning environment for students we have
been working on several projects. This term we
have purchased 268 laptops, all for use by
students in the classroom. We have also
transitioned to a new ICT system managed by
the Department of Education, called eT4L, and
added additional wireless access points in the
school. Early next term the boys and girls toilets
in the sport change rooms in the canteen block
will be upgraded. These have not been
accessible to students for many years. The
upgrade will provide new partitions and doors
and ensure all toilets are functioning. We have
also started the process of preparing for
installation of air-conditioning in classrooms,
which requires an upgrade of electricity supply.
Some classrooms have already had air-
conditioners installed, but no more can be done
until the supply of electricity can manage their
use in summer. These projects have been
possible due to Gonski equity finding provided
to our school.
I wish everyone a restful school holiday and look
forward to term 2.

Improving access to Technology at Granville
South Creative and Performing Arts High
School
Students should by now be using new laptops
that have been purchased for all faculties, the
library and ‘The Circle’. We are providing greater
opportunity for student access to technology.
Teachers will no longer have to book a
computer lab for access as they will be able to
take laptops to the classroom. We believe this
will improve educational opportunities for our
students. We have been able to fund this from
the Gonski equity funding that the school
receives.
In the past we introduced the ‘Bring Your Own
Device’ policy, enabling students to bring a
device from home to use with teacher
permission in the classroom. Students can still
bring their own device to school and use when
approved by the teacher, but there will be less
need for this, particularly in relation to mobile
phone use. The school has a policy that requires
parents and students to sign and agree to
appropriate use of devices including mobile
phones. It is expected that students have their
phone off and out of sight and use in class
unless they are specifically required to use them
when approved by the teacher.
There is a tendency for youth of today to rely
heavily on mobile phones, often to the
detriment of their learning and social and
emotional well-being. They have their place and
when used appropriately enable access to
information and communication that enhances
our lives. We understand this and as such have
policy that enables students to have phones at
school. It is expected that students will have the
agreement signed by themselves and a parent
before they bring a phone to school, and that
they will abide by the expectations that we
have.
We know that parents will support us in this
expectation, as we all want students to be
focused on learning in the classroom.

Term One was very productive and it
commenced with so many events, including
Harmony Day to celebrate our strength in
diversity in our community, our Education
Director Dr Carter and Executive Director Ms
Simmons followed by the visit by the Minister of
Education Mr Stokes, CEO from NESA, Education
Foundation, P&C Federation, colleagues,
Principals, Community Liaison Officers and
parents from schools. The biggest highlight was
welcoming our new students and continuing to
build on our positive rapport with our school
community.
Year 12 have had the opportunity to
individually discuss their future
pathways with myself, their Year Adviser
and our Careers Adviser. Wishing them
all the best with their exams, HSC and
their future pathways this year.
Year 8 students are well prepared to be
engaged in their relentless approach
towards their learning and have been
encouraged to discuss their future
decisions with our staff who are always
willing to support them in their progress.
The Homework Centre will begin early in
Term Two, with teachers supporting and
guiding our students to complete their
tasks. It will be run after school from
3:15-4:15, please pick up a permission
note from the front office.
Our Learning Centre “ The CIRCLE” is
accessible for our senior students every
Friday periods 5&6 with teachers ready
to assist our students with completion of
their assessments, assignments and any
other set learning tasks.
Scripture is on every Friday during period
4. Please pick up permission note from
the front office.
Cyber bullying workshops took place this
term and students were introduced to
many strategies to deal with concerns
when using social media by our Youth
Police Liaison Office Mr Dusan Dakic.
The effort, time and commitment our staff
put into make a difference in our students’
learning outcomes and your continued
support and engagement with our school
are greatly appreciated.
Finally, I would like to wish you a happy and
safe holiday.

It is good to see students settled in to the new
school year and engaging in all the learning
experiences that are offered at our school. It is
particularly pleasing to see our new year seven
are beginning to settle in to the routines of high
school life.
I am still concerned about the traffic congestion
outside the school, particularly in the afternoon.
Parents are reminded that traffic regulations
should be followed to ensure the safety of
students and staff when leaving the school.
Council rangers have been outside the school of
late recording infringements.
Those students who catch buses are reminded
that they are to carry the correct Opal card for
their journey. The bus companies count the
number of students using their services and
arrange bus routes around need.
I ask that parents discuss the importance of
punctuality with their children. The school day
begins at 8.50am with roll call. It is essential that
students have arrived at school by this time.
Additionally, students need to be at lessons on
time during the day. Lateness to class interrupts
the learning process for other students in the
class and may result in the lateness being
recorded as a partial truancy.
In conclusion, I wish all students and their
families a restful and safe holiday.

On the 21st of March 2017 selected students from the SRC/SLG had the honour of going to the Macarthur Girls High School Prefect Cluster to talk about leadership. I learned a lot from all the other students, especially from the Macarthur Girls SRC team, in how they put their leadership skills into action and get their whole school involved. We all left the girls' school buzzing with ideas and excited about the new possibilities that we could offer our school. The SRC/SLG team will be meeting and discussing positive initiatives we wish to make possible at Granville South Creative and Performing High School, making it an even better school than it already is.

Welcome back to the 2017 school year. The LIRC is the
learning hub of GSCAPAHS. Your child is able to access the
expertise of a trained Teacher Librarian Mrs Bennett and a very experienced Library Administration
Assistant Mrs Robins to support them in their learning. The LIRC is available to students from 8.30am
in the morning and lunchtime. We are here to assist your child with assignments , assessments and
home work during these times. During class many students come to the LIRC with classroom teachers
to utilise our amazing facilities.
The LIRC has been able to secure funds for recent upgrades. The Computer Lab has been completely
refurbished bringing it into the 21st Century. This includes new cabling (both electrical and data) as
well as workbenches and a collaborative learning space. The mobile electronic whiteboard is now
located in the LIRC for use primarily in the Computer lab but can also be moved to other locations
within the LIRC as required.
Thanks to allocated funding, our 30 wonderful new Laptops are now ready for use. Classes are now
booking into our Research Space and using the laptops in the LIRC. These Laptops are touch screen
with Wi-Fi internet access. The laptops are charged in our secure PCLocs Cabinet which is located on
the Research Floor. These cabinets are hi-tech charging stations which are both safe and easy to use.

I’d like to pass on a genuine thank you for sending the group our way; thank you Mr Sam Abbas, for his enthusiastic, genuine and caring participation; thank you to the wonderful children who shared their ideas, took many conceptual risks, were honest, respectful, thoughtful and present, and who engaged with the complex content and ideas so genuinely; as a teacher and on a personal note, thank you to your school for your ongoing efforts in empowering children who need it. I’m aware that field trips, leadership conferences and the like can be deprioritized in today’s crowded curriculum, so making ongoing efforts in supporting your SRC is especially valuable.
I think the Workshop was a success in that throughout the day I saw examples of the students express others’ values and strengths, identify themselves as leaders, and identify their own leadership styles, attributes, strengths, values and preferences. They also showed a keen interest in the transition of the Female Orphan School building from orphanage to psychiatric hospital through to its current home of the Whitlam Institute, reading room, archive, galleries and permanent exhibition of the Whitlam legacy. The students asked many questions and expressed many ‘a-ha’ moments, such as learning about the possible causes of lunacy 100 years ago. They also had a lot of fun in the boardroom and on the WSU campus.

On Monday 20th March, 31 Year 11 students set off for, what would hope to be, a trip to be
remembered for the rest of their lives. Three days and two nights were spent at Milson Island Sport
and Recreation Centre, participating in archery, fishing, challenge ropes, the giant swing, and kayaking.
Highlights of the camp, other than the awesome activities, included excitable card games, bonding
sessions with staff and students and the hilarious reaction one person had to a particular activity on
day one. Overall, the camp was a huge success and an experience we, and the rest of the attendees,
will never forget. This camp would not have been possible without the help and support of many
people, and for that we give our deepest thanks. Special mention to Mrs Paradisis, whom without her
organisation and special skills in Fundraiser BBQ’s, we would not have been able to attend camp at
such a reduced cost. Countdown is on for the next camp! Who will be going next time?!

Be All In – This term selected students were given the exciting opportunity to be a part of the ‘Be All In’ program. This 10 week ‘sports and development’ program was presented by the Bulldogs and Western Sydney University and aimed to support new and emerging communities by encouraging social cohesion through sport. Students travelled to one of three venues each week of Term 1 - Belmore Sports Ground, Western Sydney University and Auburn Youth Centre, where they participated in sports skill clinics and educational sessions presented by local community partners. Students learned valuable lessons on self-esteem, affirming diversity, dealing with challenges, rights and responsibilities and conflict resolution. Participants also had the opportunity to visit Belmore Sports Ground, the training ground of the NRL Bulldogs, Here they were treated to a guided tour of the facility, ending in a run around the ground itself. Students also enjoyed drumming workshops, a day out at the University of Western Sydney’s Open Day, and some basic self-defence lessons. Our students thoroughly enjoyed their experience and deserve a big congratulations for the way they stepped out of their comfort zone and got involved in all activities, Students built and developed friendships, developed new skills and grew in confidence, and were recognised and praised more than once by staff and facilitators of the program for their exemplary behaviour. Well done to our Granville South Creative and Performing Arts participants, they have done their school proud!

Swimming Carnival Success
The 2017 Swimming Carnival saw Red and Gold teams battle it out for first position with many of our students participating in both competitive and novelty events. Many students excelled on the day and one in particular Bilal El-Arab who produced some excellent times in the butterfly, freestyle and breaststroke, allowing him to progress to the next level at Regionals to cement a position in the NSWCHS swimming team. Well done to everyone on the day and look forward to the Athletics Carnival in Term 2.

Bilal El-Arab has proven to be a reckoning force this year in swimming and has proven that with broken
school records and progressing to the regionals and state for representative swimming. With
aspirations to swim at the Olympic stage, he has proven to have what it takes to commit himself fully
to his training program and school. Waking up 4:30 every morning to complete his training, attend

School Spirit and Volunteer Work
Year 12 and Year 11 students have been taking on Bunning’s BBQ Fundraisers in order to help
financially support events in their final two years of school. Volunteering their own time on Sundays
from 9am to 4pm, these students can be found cutting up to 30kg of onions, preparing over 650 bread
rolls and sausages, cleaning up workstation and conversing with the public, sometimes in extreme heat
or even torrential rain! Whilst it can be very tough to tackle the weather, students have represented
Granville South CAPA High School extremely well. These students are to be commended for their
efforts in supporting their classmates and their great citizenship. These fundraisers would not have
been possible without the help of staff and we thank them for their contributions; Mrs Paradisis, Ms

CAPA Faculty
A quick word from the CAPA Faculty:
This year we are pleased to welcome 20 new Year 7 students, and a handful of students from other year groups, into our CAPA Ensembles program for 2017 following successful auditions. 2017 looks to be another big year for our Circus, Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Arts Ensembles and we're incredibly pleased with the progress of our students as they prepare for some upcoming performances and showcase opportunities. Keep up the hard work, Ensembles! As Year 12 prepare to present their Major Projects, Performances, and Bodies of Work for the 2017 Higher School Certificate, students have been attending showcases and exhibitions of exemplary works from the 2016 HSC. Our students attended OnStage (Drama), Callback (Dance), Art Express (Visual Arts) and Encore (Music) to witness and reflect upon the excellent achievements of students in their courses. We hope that our Year 12 students continue to reflect on the work presented at these excellence showcases and consider the time, effort, and dedication required to achieve Band 6 results in the Creative and Performing Arts. We look forward to reporting on the excellent achievements of our Elective and Ensemble CAPA students as the year progresses. Keep up to date with our performances and events via the school's Facebook page. Already CAPA students have presented as part of official school functions and whole school events including Harmony Day, with many more events still to come in 2017.

Ancient Egyptian Mummies Excursion
This Term, S4 and S5 classes have been investigating Ancient Egypt as part of their Stage
6 History Life Skills Coursework. On Friday 10 March 2017, S4 and S5 were given the rare
opportunity to attend Egyptian Mummies: Exploring Ancient Lives Exhibition at the
Powerhouse Museum in the City.
S4 and S5 came face to face with six mummies selected from the British Museum
collection that lived and died in Egypt between 1800 and 3000 years ago.
Along these mummies, students were able to view 3D CT scan visualisations that unlock
hidden secrets of mummification and provide a unique insight into the everyday lives of
ancient Egyptians.

Students also were able to experience through their sense of smell as to how Ancient
Egyptians were mummified.
This collection; from the British Museum, have used new scientific research to discover
more about the lives of these people, their health and the processes of mummification.
Each of the showcased mummies has been carefully chosen in order to reveal various
aspects of the mummification process, religious belief and family life.
This Exhibition was enjoyed by all the students and it was a pleasure to take such a well
behaved group of students to see such an amazing exhibition.

Purchase and delivery of food during the school day
It has come to my attention that a small number of students are eating food from local businesses purchased through the school day and also arranging delivery of food to the school, including the perimeter fencing. This is considered a breach of our schools Code of Conduct, and as such will be managed following our school discipline and behaviour management processes. We have a duty of care for the safety, security and well-being of our students. If students want to bring their own food to school then it must be from home or purchased out of school hours and packed appropriately in their bags for consumption at appropriate times through the school day. In 2015 Granville South Creative and Performing Arts High School entered into an agreement with a new canteen operator. Feedback has been very positive. They offer a range of foods before school, at recess and lunch. Part of the contract with the canteen operator is that they must be informed in advance if students are absent on an excursion, or if food is being provided for an event. Teachers at times may arrange food for special events such as excursions, incursions or celebrations and at these times the food delivery or purchase will be arranged by the teacher with prior approval from Executive staff and notification to the school canteen. We appreciate your support in this matter. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact the school to arrange a meeting with the relevant Deputy Principal.
Regards,
Mrs Melissa Johnston
Principal
