GREENMOUNT GRAPEVINE Members Newsletter PO Box 156, Tweed Heads NSW 2485 Version: February 2015 Phone—07 5536 1506 ext 1 Patrolling Greenmount Beach since 1911 Email—[email protected] Website—www.thcslsc.com.au I hope all our members enjoyed the festive sea- son and I would like to thank those members in particular who volunteered to do the extra pa- trol hours over the holiday period. Just as well too as the conditions were very testing and a significant number of rescues were performed. I know from my own patrol that we worked hard for the whole time to maintain a safe swimming area – well done to Grace, Kasia, Ebony, Tiani, Adelle, Taylor and our resident lifesaver Peter Whitaker. Its good to see Deano back in his role as patrol coordinator giving Chris a hand organising the patrol roster. It was great to see so many members attend the official opening of the Training Centre on 12 th December by our local state member Jann Stuckey. We are slowly getting things together with Jace Wood managing the purchase of over $1,000 worth of training equipment for the centre from the credits the club receives from AMART SPORTS. The fit out of other items will be undertaken soon to set up the centre for awards training, physical training, as well as a member’s room. Thank you to Norm, Bill and Al for attending to the list of jobs that never end. The extensions to the club were officially com- pleted on the 23 rd January with the installation and commissioning of the lift. The final pro- gress claim and certificate of classification has been received and I am pleased to advise that the costs have been contained within the pro- ject budget. There now only remains the pay- ment of head works charges to council and this is currently being negotiated with council through our town planner. It is planned to hold a General Meeting before the end of the season to discuss the remaining stages of the redevelopment work and give members the opportunity for input on what should be included in the second and remain- ing stages. It has been decided to delay the relocation of the surf club office to the new facilities until the end of the season. This will give the Helens time to move without being constantly inter- rupted by club business. Similarly we have been granted an extension of time to acquit the grant provided to upgrade the amenities. This work will now be undertaken at the end of the season to avoid any further dis- ruptions to members using these facilities. We took delivery of the new ATV on 31 st Janu- ary and it will be rust proofed prior to being used on the beach next weekend. We will also sched- ule follow up rust proofing at the end of each season in order to get as much life out of the machine as possible. Thank you to Peter Whitaker who has managed the purchase of the new ATV on behalf of the club. Work to the first aid room has now been com- pleted with the installation of the hand basin. Great news for the club in that we will be ac- tively involved in the Aussie Titles this year. The last youth event is a 2.5km ocean swim from Greenmount to Kirra and the TH&C Training Room will be used to administer the event. The patrol break up party on the new deck was a great success. It was very pleasing to see so many patrolling members celebrating the day with our more senior members. The Supporter’s Club have recently offered the Surf Club to take over the raffles on a Friday night and Sunday. We obviously accepted with- out hesitation as the raffles provide the opportu- nity for all sections of the club to raise money to fund their activities. A program will be released soon that provides the timings for each section to undertake the raffles. Could I please ask all patrolling members not to abuse the entitlement to two free drinks at the end of each patrol. Patrol Captains are re- minded that they are to collect only two tickets from the bar for each patrolling member taking up the entitlement and additional tickets are not to be collected for members not taking up the entitlement. Members consuming more than two free beers or wines could potentially cause problems for the Supporter’s Club with the liq- uor licensing board. Regards Dave FROM THE PRESIDENT

I hope all our members enjoyed the festive sea-son and I would like to thank those members in particular who volunteered to do the extra pa-trol hours over the holiday period. Well done to our patrol members on their efforts during the very busy holiday period. A number of patrols had to deal with very trying conditions and were kept on their toes trying to keep large numbers of people within the flags. Thank you to Sharon Leaney, Mark Hryczyszyn Vaughn Thomas, Ian Ahrens, Grace Hickling & Kate Miller for answering our text message for immediate assistance on a one of the busiest days. There were also quite a few first aid cases, sting-ers, unconfirmed sightings of marine creatures and a couple of very intense rescues. I have been advised of the outstanding efforts by a number of our Patrol Captains and Patrol Mem-bers and I would like to sincerely congratulate them all on a job very well done. A number of our younger patrol members were involved in rescues and their Captains were very proud of how these young members conducted them-selves during very stressful situations. Special mentions to Zac Bacon, Matthew Walsh, Mia Carlin & Monique Burns Well done also to Craig Aston. Craig has only recently attained his award and had taken a res-cue board out for training when he responded to an emergency situation outside of the flagged area. By all accounts Craig’s actions greatly as-sisted in the positive outcome . While I would like to add more details of the res-cues, as surf lifesavers we are not permitted to discuss the details of rescues due to privacy is-sues. Please ensure that you do not add details of any incidents onto social media or provide details to the media. A reminder to all patrol members that if you suf-fer any signs of stress or anxiety after attending an incident, please contact your Patrol Captain,

Director of Lifesaving Chris Van Doorn, myself or Helen is the office. Everyone deals with things differently and help is always available within the Club, Branch & SLSQ whenever needed. We have a few more months of patrols left so please keep up the good work and make sure that you get a sub if you can’t make your patrol. If you give it your best shot and still can’t find a sub, please let the office know as there is noth-ing worse for your patrol mates than turning up to a patrol without enough people. It places a lot of pressure on the members who have turned up. A belated congratulations to Ross Kemp on attaining 100% patrols last season, also an apology as Ross 100% was missed on Presen-tation Night. Ross is a dedicated patrol member and his commitment to surf lifesaving is out-standing. We are very fortunate to have received a new polaris that was purchased from Grants re-ceived from SLSQ, the Queensland Govern-ment and SLSA. A number of carnivals are coming up with the Branch, State and Australian Titles to be held within the next couple of months. We will be calling a Surf Sports meeting soon but please contact the office ASAP if you intend on entering any carnivals. A big thankyou to Amart Sports for their Com-munity Incentive Program. We have received over $1,200.00 worth of training equipment through the program. Thankyou also to every-one who nominated TH&C as their recipient when making purchases at Amart Sports South Tweed Heads. It is not too late to nominate TH&C if you haven’t already done so. Hello to all. Hope everyone had a great Christ-mas and holiday. It is all over now so time to get back into it. Our new Training Facility is up and running and about to be tested with an IRB Driver/Crew course and a Bronze course about to be conducted within its walls, commencing next Sunday 8/2/15. The IRB course is being con-ducted by Darren Healey, Jy Taylor, Deb Scotman and myself, while the Bronze course is being conducted by Kaye Gillett and Deb Scotman. We decided to run the courses side by side so as to be able to help each other out by sharing resources for such things as water safety and instruction. The IRB course runs until the 15/3/15 and at-tendance is required each Saturday and Sun-day from 8am. I make no excuse for the length of the course. We have found that this length allows for the full development of the requisite skills that are required to successfully drive and crew an irb in a wide variety of conditions, while also de-veloping teamwork within the group. We also have ourselves a lot of fun doing it.

This course will also include instruction in Cairn laying. Very useful for those who attend carnivals. This will make your life a lot easier when laying or retrieving your string of 9. Kaye is planning a very comprehensive Bronze Course, utilizing all of the training aids and equipment in the new training room. Kaye runs a tight ship so those who attend this course can consider themselves well prepared for Patrols in the future. The new ATV has arrived and once this has been run in we will be scheduling an ATV In-duction. We will notify when this is going to happen in the near future . Concerning the IRB,s, I am happy to see the motors being tagged with the red "faulty" tags when there is a problem does occur with the motors or the craft, please make an entry into the IRB Log of Operations to that effect

and let someone know so as it will get back to me. I visit the shed every Monday or Tuesday and I find the motors tagged as faulty but no en-try into the log as to what is wrong with it. Attach a note or something if you cannot locate the log or anyone to report too. I will see this and take the appropriate action. Thanks to Garth McMillan and his Patrol Group for logging in a problem which was duly cor-rected.

Please, when Patrol is finished, could you thor-oughly wash the sand out of the craft before placing it back in the new IRB lock up. This job is not being done by everyone and the shed is being filled with sand, which someone has to sweep out. Also, the boats and the shed are not a rubbish tip. Any rubbish please dispose of in the outside bins. It pains me also to report that we have a thief among our members. After moving the boats, equipment and parts into the new Shed , I found later that a brand new Diving Knife; which I was going to fit into the aurora craft the following week, had been removed from the parts bin in the shed . This stinks and whomever it was should be ashamed. Fortunately this is rare so a big thank you to all that do the right thing. That is all for this report. Take care and stay safe. Rob Walters. On Anzac Day we are commemorating 100 years since the Gallipoli landings. Twin Towns Club are going to great ex-pense to organise a special Anzac Day Ceremony. They are going to re-enact the landings at Gallipoli using surf boats for the dawn service and the 11am march on the 25th April. They are going to have two boats from Greenmount and two boats from Coolangatta SLSC. Each boat will have 4 rowers; a sweep and 5 other soldiers – there will be 10 people per boat. As the boats are com-ing in there will be a mock battle using pyrotechnics, light and sound (21 techni-cians & TV station film crews etc) and when you hit the beach you must jump out of the boat and participate in a mock battle and get shot by the Turks. The Turks will be defending the beach. They will be using actual uniforms from World War 1 and you will be required to attend fittings for the uniforms and shown how to put the uniforms on so you can wear them properly ie webbing and also on how to use a 303 rife – this could take up to 2 hours so don’t put your hand up if you are going to be unavailable to attend this session – we don’t have a date for this yet.

It is hoped that Jeff Best will be able to organ-ise an old crew from his rowing days plus 5 others to make a total of 10. I will need another 10 personnel to go in the other boat. Also be mindful of the fact that as Greenmount’s Sweep will be away I may need another couple of sweeps and rowers to help out Greenmount so I could need up to 20 – 30 people. We will also have to do a trial run beforehand to work out how long it will take to row from the V wall into the beach with 10 people – re-membering you will have boots and uniforms and rifles etc in the boat so you will be back chocking all the way. We will need to get the boat unloaded on the harbour the night before – there will be secu-rity all night long along the harbour so no wor-ries there. You will be required to be at Twin Towns Club at 3:30am on Anzac Day (25th April) to get dressed and walk over to the boats, get the boat out to the V wall and then wait for the attack. The battle will be broadcast also on large screens around the harbour and the whole thing will again be re-enacted at 11am for the main street march. If you would like to be involved in this please let the office or myself know ASAP. Graham Matthews

SUNDAYS ON THE BEACH The Nippers have been blessed this year with some of the best conditions for the start of the year we have had. Winds turning southerly on Saturday night, bit of swell although it be a little fat at times have had the nippers out in droves. Its great when you stand on the beach at 10am, the official end of nippers, and there are still 50 nippers out on the boards trying to get the most out of the conditions. Free surfing and catching “party waves”. It’s all about having fun and prac-ticing what will be great life long skills. NIPPER TO THE RESCUE Right on pack up time of nippers in mid January Maddie Fuller made her maiden rescue. A surfer that was a really poor swimmer snapped his leg rope out the back and called on Maddie for as-sistance. He was a big man. Easily twice Mad-die's size and she got him on the front of her board and got him half the way back in when the IRB was able to take him the rest of the way. I'm not sure how Maddie negotiated the swell out the back with that weight on the front but she did it. This is what we are all here for. Maddie has been a nipper and trained hard for at least five years and she had the skills to make a differ-ence to that mans life. Well done Maddie we are so proud. NEW SPONSORS We are really happy to advise that the nippers have picked up two new sponsors this year. They have each brought a new tent for us. They are East Coast kitchens and Cabinets and Tweed Heads and Coolangatta Taxi service. Please make sure you give them a call

UNDER EIGHT SHARKS

The biggest decrease in our numbers comes as our age groups have to swim and compete around the back cans. Most of us reading this know why. Craig Sadler and his under eight sharks are breaking this phobia. They are regu-larly swimming the cans with the required water cover and are starting to look forward to it. A couple of weeks ago we were really excited by a large group of under eight parents that took up the challenge and did the same swim (once). The suggestion of some adult vs nipper swim teams relays are being discussed. Watch out parents. CARNIVAL SEASON It’s the business end of the season now. The nippers have six carnivals over the next ten weeks.

North Kirra starts with the 11-14’s Branch carni-val on Feb 7-8th. It’s an important carnival for this age because it is the carnival where we compete to qualify to compete at state in our relays Our 11’s being the only exception as they have to qualify for everything. We are really excited about our chances of qualifying for most events The next carnival is branch for our 8-10’s at Bi-linga on February 22nd. It’s so important that as many of the Nippers compete in this carnival. Participations rates are so important as it’s builds confidence for future years. On the 1st of March we will host the Coolmountbay Carnival. Coolangatta and Rainbow wheel their BBQ’s and eskies over to our club and we have a really fun day of racing, free BBQ’s and lots of raffles and giveaways. The Annual Kieran Young Memorial Trophy is raced as part of our club champs on March 8. It is a mixed age and sex Cameron relay race to celebrate the fantastic contribution Kieran made to our club. It’s our third club champs and it will help determine our age awards and some of them are very hotly contested. The state junior championships for the 11-15’s is at Maroochydore this year on March 20-22nd. This year the 15’s join the event in an attempt to help them transition better into the senior club. The trips away are always fun. There are some long days in the sun but also some long nights not analysing any of the results. We have some solid chances again this year and hope to better our Gold and two bronzes from last year. A new carnival completes the year in April which is a youth Aussies. It’s for the 14’s and 15’s. We have some excited nippers looking forward to competing at North Kirra. 200 CLUB – DON’T MISS OUT A major event the Nippers hold every year is our 200 club. We have set a date of the 15th of march so make sure your not one of those ask-ing for a ticket on the day for us to tell you we are all sold out. If winning $10,000 sounds like a good idea look for the details in this Grapevine. NIPPER BREAKUP The last date of the year for all our Nipper Fami-lies and Sponsor to remember is our Nipper presentation and break up day. It’s Sunday March 29. More details are coming soon. Thanks Vaughn Nipper President

ATTENTION ALL SENIOR MEMBERS AND OLD BOYS

The Nippers don’t want to come straight out and say that their parents are busier

than you because it will and won’t be true.

What they do want you to know is they need and welcome your help.

If you are proficient, got a blue card and available Tuesday or Thursday afternoon or Saturday or Sunday morning we can use you.

We are constantly short of water cover especially at carnivals

and especially in the IRB at carnivals.

Your years of skills and knowledge of our beach need to be passed on to our future lifesavers.

If you have any queries please talk to Vaughn The Nipper president or the Office.

It’s important for you to know you are welcome.

We are so grateful for everyone to just do one thing.

Vaughn Thomas Nipper President

Attention all new nipper families.

As a requirement of Surf Lifesaving, the ladies in the office are to sight

identification for all new members.

They need to sight a birth certificate or passport for all new nippers.

If you have not already done so, please ensure that this requirement is fulfilled as soon as possible.

Identification for parents has been noted through the applications for blue cards.

LOST

Please contact the office if you know the whereabouts of a plastic bag with school shoes, uniforms etc that was left after

nippers last week.

It was last seen at the back of the BBQ near the training room.
