Assignment 3: artist’s creative self-portraitYou will be developing a digitally compiled self-portrait. You will be incorporating found
and created objects, images of yourself and things you love, your artwork and ???? for
the creation of your self portrait.
Forget the idea of the conventional portrait. This portrait will be expressive of your
personality and artistic/design style.
ASSIGNMENT NOTES
- 50% of the artwork for the project must be hand created and integrated digitally.
This can take the form of hand drawn elements, but don’t limit your creativity
to that constraint. Think of making 3-D items and photographing them; find objects
and take photos, create new artwork but push the boundaries in the way you
present them. You must use hand drawn/created elements and photography you take.
- You must have a recognizable facial element in your portrait- you can alter a
photograph, draw/paint yourself, use the photograph to create vector image or alter
in some way it becomes something new (digital or hand manipulation-get creative!)
- Do not use stock illustrations for this project; do not copy stock illustration.
- You may use some stock photography preferably ONLY if you cannot get the image
needed another way. You need to be creating original art and designs for your
projects and this will factor heavily in your grade. I prefer you set up and take your
own photos.
- When stock photos are needed, you may ONLY access images that have creative
commons licenses or other ‘free’ usage agreements, but not for every element. You
will need to keep a record of where your imagery comes from and talk about it in
your final presentation. (You also need to type up the source list to turn in with your final)
Websites you may access for images for this project:
Creative commons imagery: http://search.creativecommons.org/
Public Domain imagery:http://www.public-domain-image.com/
Some art is available for free or noncommercial work: deviantart.com
DO NOT DOWNLOAD PHOTOS FROM OTHER SITES FOR THIS PROJECT
AND DO NOT DOWNLOAD CLIP ART FROM THESE SITES
- You must combine raster and vector images to create new artwork
- You are required to keep all your source files in a folder. As you scan in items,
take photos or create vector artwork, please keep the unedited and original file in a
separate folder. You will be required to turn these files in via drop box the day of
final presentation for instructor review. You will discuss how you incorporated all
your items and discuss how you altered them/used them.
- Do not rely heavily on photoshop or illustrator brushes to create elements in your
work. Again, you should be creating original art and designs for your work and are
going to have to show each element used as a separate piece for work citation;
brushes do not count for source imagery.
- NO LO RES imagery (unless a pixelated effect is desired for your portrait). If you
are building your final portrait in photoshop, be sure you set the dpi to 300.

You need to incorporate a minimum of 15 separate elements in the creation of your project. You will then have a minimum of 15 source files.
- You will need to incorporate a minimum of 15 seperate elements in the creation
of your portrait.
YOUR SELF PORTRAIT
You will start with a brainstorming session. Write down a minimum of 25 adjectives that
describe your personality. Write down a minimum of 15 for your art/artistic style/design
sensibility. Write down other thoughts or things that are near to your heart, inspirational
or defines you in some way. This list will need to be photocopied or typed up and
turned in with your final. Sketch review will include reviewing this list and discussing
how you will create a portrait that conveys YOU in imagery. (You may incorporate
some type or handwritten fonts, but the focus of the project should expression of self
through imagery)
After you have your brainstorming list, you will need to start making notes/sketches
of different elements that you want to use/combine/create for your project. You will
need to have a concept and a clear plan of execution before you start working on the
computer. Sketches will still be required; you need to plan out your composition and
think about how you will combine separate elements to create a unified layout. (Revisit
the principles of design and elements of art)
