S The length of the trimmer line is also im-portant. A longer trimmer line requiresgreater engine power than a shortertrimmer line of the same diameter.

S Make sure that the cutter on the trimmerguard is intact. This is used to cut thetrimmer line to the correct length.

S To increase the life of the trimmer line itcan be soaked in water for a couple ofdays. This will make the line tougher sothat it lasts longer.

IMPORTANT!Always ensure the trimmer line is woundtightly and evenly around the drum, otherwisethe machine will generate harmful vibration.

WARNING: Always stop the en-gine before doing any work on thecutting attachment. This continuesto rotate even after the throttle hasbeen released. Ensure that thecutting attachment has stoppedcompletely and disconnect thelead from the spark plug beforeyou start to work on it.

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

3. Make sure you can move and stand safely.Check the area around you for possible ob-stacles (roots, rocks, branches, ditches, etc.)in case you have to move suddenly. Takegreat care when working on sloping ground.

4. Switch off the engine before moving toanother area.

5. Never put the machine down with the enginerunning or while the cutting attachment isrotating.

Basic working techniquesS Always slow the engine to idle speed aftereach working operation. Long periods atfull throttle without any load on the enginecan lead to serious engine damage.

S It is recommended that the engine notbe operated for longer than 1 minute atfull throttle with no load.

Grass trimming using a trimmer headTrimming

S Hold the trimmer head just above theground at an angle. It is the end of the trim-mer line that does the work. Let the trim-mer line work at its own pace. Never pressthe trimmer line into the area to be cut.

S The trimmer line can easily remove grassand weeds up against walls, fences, treesand borders, however it can also damagesensitive bark on trees and bushes, anddamage fence posts.

S CAUTION! Do not use the machineunless you are able to call for help inthe event of an accident.

2. Do not use the machine in bad weather, such as dense fog, heavy rain, strongwind, intense cold, etc. Working in badweather is tiring and often brings addedrisks, such as icy ground, unpredictablefelling direction, etc.

S Reduce the risk of damaging plants byshortening the trimmer line to 4--4 1/2 inches(10--12 cm) and reducing the engine speed.

S When trimming you should use less thanfull throttle so that the trimmer line lastslonger and to reduce the wear on thetrimmer head.

Clearing

S The clearing technique removes all un-wanted vegetation. Keep the trimmerhead just above the ground and tilt it. Letthe end of the trimmer line strike theground around trees, posts, statues andthe like. CAUTION! This techniqueincreases the wear on the trimmer line.

S The trimmer line wears quicker and mustbe fed forward more often when workingagainst stones, brick, concrete, metalfences, etc., than when coming into con-tact with trees and wooden fences.

Cutting

S The trimmer is ideal for cutting grass thatis difficult to reach using a normal lawnmower. Keep the trimmer line parallel tothe ground when cutting. Avoid pressingthe trimmer head against the ground asthis can ruin the lawn and damage thetool.

S Do not allow the trimmer head to con-stantly come into contact with the groundduring normal cutting. Constant contactof this type can cause damage and wearto the trimmer head.

English---11115391527 Rev. 4 5/15/12

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONSSweeping

S The fan effect of the rotating line can beused for quick and easy clearing up.Hold the trimmer line parallel to andabove the area to be swept and movethe tool to and fro.

S When cutting and sweeping you shoulduse full throttle to obtain the best results.

WARNING: Watch out forthrown objects. Always wearapproved eye protection. Neverlean over the cutting attachmentguard. Stones, rubbish, etc. can bethrown up into the eyes causingblindness or serious injury. Keepunauthorised persons at a dis-tance. Children, animals, onlookersand helpers should be kept outsidethe safety zone of 15 m. Stop themachine immediately if anyoneapproaches. Never swing the ma-chine around without first checkingbehind you to make sure no one iswithin the safety zone.

WARNING: Sometimesbranches or grass get caughtbetween the guard and cuttingattachment or wrapped around theshaft. Neither the operator of themachine nor anyone else may at-tempt to remove the cut materialwhile the engine is running or thecutting equipment is rotating,as this can result in serious injury.Stop the engine and cutting equip-ment before you remove material. The bevel gear can get hot duringuse and may remain so for a whileafterwards. You could get burned ifyou touch it.

It is important to accurately measurethe amount of oil to be mixed to ensure thatthe correct mixture is obtained. When mixingsmall amounts of fuel, even small inaccura-cies can drastically affect the ratio of themixture.

GasolineS Use good quality unleaded gasoline.

WARNING: Always ensure thereis adequate ventilation when han-dling fuel.

WARNING: Gasoline is veryflammable. Avoid smoking orbringing any flame or sparks nearfuel. Make sure to stop the engineand allow it cool before refuelingthe unit. Select outdoor bareground for fueling and move atleast 10 feet (3 meters) away fromthe fueling point before startingthe engine.

Gasoline requirementsS All 2--stroke RedMax products are pow-ered by professional-commercial duty,hi--performance, hi--RPM, air cooled2--stroke engines. RedMax hi--performance2--stroke engines produce higher HPoutputs as compared to standard homeowner duty or light commercial dutyproduction engines offered by mostmanufacturers.

S Exhaust emission are controlled by thefundamental engine parameters and com-ponents (eg. carburation, ignition timingand port timing) without addition of anymajor hardware or the introduction of aninert material during combustion.

S The RedMax engines are registered andcertified with CARB (California Air Re-sources Board) and EPA (EnvironmentalProtection Agency) to operate on clean,mid--grade89 octane or premium, unleaded (lead--free)gasoline and RedMax air--cooled “Max Life”synthetic blend premium 2--stroke engine oilmixed at 50:1 ratio.

S Unleaded gasoline is recommended toreduce the contamination of the air for thesake of your health and the environment.

S This hi--performance air cooled 2--strokeengine requires the use of minimum 89octane [R+M]/2 (mid--grade or premium)clean gasoline. Gasoline may contain amaximum of 10% Ethanol (grain alcohol)or up to 15% MTBE (Methyl tertiary--butylether). Gasoline containing Methanol(Wood Alcohol) is NOT approved.

IMPORTANT! If the octane rating of themid-grade gasoline in your area is lowerthan 89 octane use premium unleadedgasoline. The majority of all 2--strokeengine manufacturers in the USA andCanada recommend using gasoline with 89octane or higher.

CAUTION! Gasoline with an octane ratinglower than 89 will greatly increase the en-gines operating temperature. Low octanegasoline will cause detonation (knock)resulting in piston seizures and major inter-nal engine components damage.Poor quality gasolines or oils may damagesealing rings, fuel lines or fuel tank of theengine.

IMPORTANT! Failures caused by operatingengines on gasoline with octane rating low-er than 89 are not covered by the RedMax2--stroke engine warranty.

CAUTION! Alternative fuels such as E--15(15% ethanol), E--20 (20% ethanol), E--85(85% ethanol) are NOT classified as gasolineand are NOT approved for use in RedMax2--stroke gasoline engines. Use of alternativefuels will cause major engine performanceand durability problems such as: improperclutch engagements, overheating, vaporlock, power loss, lubrication deficiency, de-terioration of fuel lines, gaskets and internalcarburetor components, etc. Alternativefuels cause high moisture absorption intothe fuel/oil mixture leading to oil and fuelseparation.Oil requirementsS Use only RedMax “Max Life” syntheticblend premium air--cooled 2--stroke en-gine oil or oil certified to ISO--L--EGD(ISO/CD 1378) standard and one that isJASO--FD registered. RedMax air--cooled“Max Life” synthetic blend premium2--stroke engine oil and ISO--L--EGD(ISO/CD 1378) AND JASO--FD oils arefully compatible with gasoline’s containing10% Ethanol. RedMax air--cooled “MaxLife” synthetic blend premium 2--strokeengine oil and ISO--L--EGD (ISO/CD1378) AND JASO--FD oils are universaland should be mixed at 50:1 ratio for all2--stroke air cooled engines sold in thepast regardless of mixing ratios specifiedin those manuals.

S If the oil is registered with JASO, theJASO Logo with FD and registration num-ber will be displayed on the container. The highest JASO rating is “FD”, whichequals the ISO--L--EGD rating. Lower rat-ings are “FC”, “FB”, and “FA”.

Gasoline/oil mixture recommenda-tionsStore your gasoline or gasoline/oil mixturein a cool, dry area in a tightly sealed ap-proved container to limit the entry of mois-ture and additional air (oxygen). Moistureand air cause the development of varnishand gum, making the fuel stale. Stored gas-oline and gasoline/oil mixture ages andloses its octane rating and volatility. Do notmix more gasoline/oil than you intend to usein 30 days, and 60 days when fuel stabilizeris added. RedMax air--cooled “Max Life”synthetic blend premium 2--stroke engine oilcontains fuel stabilizer and will automatical-ly extend your gasoline/oil mixture life up to60 days.

CAUTION! Do not use NMMA (National Ma-rine Manufacturers Association), BIA (BoatingIndustry Association), and TCW (two-- cyclewater cooled) oils designed for mopeds oroutboard, water cooled marine engines. Donot use API (American Petroleum Institute),TC (2--cycle) labeled oils. The API--TC teststandard has been discontinued by API in1995 and it no longer exists.

MixingS Always mix the gasoline and oil in a cleancontainer intended for fuel.

S Always start by flling half the amount of thegasoline to be used. Then add the entireamount of oil. Mix (shake) the fuel mixture.Add the remaining amount of gasoline.

S Mix (shake) the fuel mixture thoroughly be-fore filling the machine’s fuel tank.

S Do not mix more than one month’s supplyof fuel at a time.

S If the machine is not used for some time, thefuel tank should be emptied and cleaned.

MAINTENANCE

CarburetorYour product has been designed andmanufactured to specifications that reduceharmful emissions. After the engine hasused 8--10 tanks of fuel, the engine will berun--in. To ensure that it continues to run atpeak performance and to minimize harmfulexhaust emissions after the run--in period, ask your servicing dealer to adjust your car-buretor.

The owner is responsible for the perfor-mance of all required maintenance asdefined in the operator’s manual.

WARNING: The complete clutch, clutch cover, and shaft must befitted before the machine is started, otherwise parts could come looseand cause personal injury.

Function

S The carburetor governs the engine’sspeed via the throttle control. Air and fuelare mixed in the carburetor.

S The T--screw regulates the throttle settingat idle speed. If the T--screw is turnedclockwise this gives a higher idle speed;turning it counterclockwise gives a loweridle speed.

Basic settingS The basic carburetor settings are ad-justed during testing at the factory. Fineadjustment should be carried out by askilled technician.

CAUTION! If the cutting attachment rotateswhen the engine is idling the idle adjustmentscrew T should be turned counterclockwiseuntil the cutting attachment stops.

WARNING: The cutting attach-ment may be spinning during carbu-retor adjustments. Wear your protec-tive equipment and observe all safe-ty instructions. Be sure the cuttingattachment stops turning when theengine idles. When the unit is turnedoff, make sure the cutting attach-ments has stopped before the unit isset down.

Rec. idle speed:See “Technical data” section.Recommended max. speed:See “Technical data” section.

Fine adjustment of the idle speed--TAdjust the idle speed using the idle adjust-ment screw--T if it is necessary to readjust.First, turn the idle adjustment screw--Tclockwise until the cutting attachment startsto rotate. Then, turn the screw counterc-lockwise until the cutting attachment stops. The idle speed is correctly adjusted whenthe engine will run smoothly in every posi-tion. The idle speed should also be wellbelow the speed at which the cutting at-tachment starts to rotate.

MAINTENANCE

WARNING: If the idle speed can-not be adjusted so that the cuttingattachment stops, contact your ser-vicing dealer. Do not use the ma-chine until it has been correctly ad-justed or repaired.

Unit/Maintenance SafetyDisconnect the spark plug before perform-ing maintenance, except carburetor adjust-ments.

Muffler

CAUTION! Muffler is fitted with a catalyticconverter designed to reduce harmful ex-haust gases.

The muffler is designed to reduce the noiselevel and to direct the exhaust gases awayfrom the operator. The exhaust gases arehot and can contain sparks, which maycause fire if directed against dry and com-bustible material.Mufflers are equipped with a special sparkarrestor mesh. The mesh should bechecked and, if necessary. cleaned by aservicing dealer. If the mesh is damaged,it should be replaced. If the mesh is fre-quently blocked, this can be a sign that theperformance of the catalytic converter isimpaired. Contact your servicing dealer toinspect the muffler. A blocked mesh willcause the machine to overheat and resultin damage to the cylinder and piston.

CAUTION! Never use a machine that hasa faulty or loose muffler. Ensure the mufflerbolts are tight.

Muffler bolts

Spark plug

The spark plug condition is influenced by:S Incorrect carburetor adjustment.S An incorrect fuel mixture (too much or in-correct type of oil).

S A dirty air filter. These factors cause deposits on the sparkplug electrodes, which may result in operat-ing problems and starting difficulties. If the machine is low on power, difficult tostart or runs poorly at idle speed: alwayscheck the spark plug first before takingany further action. If the spark plug is dirty, clean it and check that the electrode gap is0.024″ (0.6 mm). The spark plug should bereplaced after about a month in operation orearlier if necessary.

CAUTION! Always use the recommendedspark plug type! Use of the wrong sparkplug can damage the piston/cylinder.

0.024″ (0.6 mm)
