DIRECTOR ’S NOTES : “GREASE ! ”
According to Dramatics Magazine, GREASE is among the most performed
musicals by stock, high school, college and amateur groups throughout
the country. The question is,Why? It doesn’t have the significant social
relevance of CABARET, multi level characters like INTO THE WOODS, or
even sophisticated music and lyrics like ANYTHING GOES. So, Why?
Mostly, because it’s fun! GREASE is an affectionate spoof of the 1950’s
high school experience.....an exaggerated parody of the greasers and
their “loose” girls and the jocks and their cheerleaders.....a complete
reversal of the plots of the Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello movies.
The characters are pretty much asocial, but benignly so, and therefore
we like them even as we don’t agree with their behavior. But the largest
component of the fun is the musical score. It’s pure 1950’s early rock n’ roll
where doowop reigned and heavy tragedy was being alone at the drive-in.
The nostalgia of the piece is both fun for the audience and especially for
the student actors who have the opportunity to portray “themselves” in
another time, another place and with tongue in cheek.
We’ve had great fun creating this production from laughing through 50’s
slang to working up a sweat doing the Hand Jive. We hope you have a
great time tonight and....A WOP BOP A LOO BOP, A WOP BAM BOOM!
Pam Kriger
P.S. This is the 40th anniversary of GREASE--it opened on Broadway
February 14th, 1972.
