Message from Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful
What an amazing year for Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and the Great American Cleanup of PA! Yet
again, Pennsylvania had an impressive showing with more than 6,000 events all across the state
engaging 158,821 volunteers in community greening, beautification and cleanups. Organized groups,
civic organizations, families and friends took to our parks, trails, and streets to reclaim our communities
by picking up trash, planting gardens and sprucing up entire downtown districts. These community
stewards share our vision of a clean and beautiful Pennsylvania and understand that clean and beautiful
communities will lead to greener, more vibrant communities.
For 10 years running, the Great American Cleanup of PA has had 100% county participation. We have
seen this program grow through service oriented marketing and media partners, like-minded
organizations, word of mouth and best of all long-term supporters and participants.
We are excited to see members of our Business Council such as Weis, Wawa, Giant Food Stores and
Sheetz give back to communities by providing gift cards, food vouchers and direct program support for
many local community events.
We are grateful for the ongoing support of Keep America Beautiful, the Department of Environmental
Protection, Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association, PennDOT and their Adopt-A-Highway Program,
KPB Business Council Members, partnering and sponsoring organizations and of course, the hundreds
of thousands of volunteers for helping make the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania one of the
strongest programs in the nation.
Finally, I am proud to report $16 million dollars’ worth of money saved or cost avoided through in-kind
services, donations and volunteer time. We look forward to continuing to support all those volunteers
and organizations working tirelessly to keep our communities clean and beautiful.
Sincerely,
Shannon Reiter

$16 Million - The value of money saved or costs avoided due to the generous donations of
supplies, services and manpower to the Great American Cleanup of PA. Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful
knows that without the support of our sponsors, Business Council members, volunteers, local

Communities in Action
During the week of Earth Day, approximately
1,800 volunteers from the Friends of Allentown
Parks in Lehigh County canvassed 19 local parks
with the mission of making them clean and
beautiful. Over one weekend, the volunteers
removed 5,950 bags of trash, 107 bags of invasive
plants, 14 shopping carts and 33 televisions. The
group also completed beautification projects.
These dedicated volunteers helped make
Allentown parks clean and beautiful for all
visitors to enjoy and reconnect with nature.
From March through April more than 22,500
residents of the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny
County banded together to participate in the
Citizens Against Litter - Redd Up 2016 for the
Great American Cleanup of PA. An estimated 450
communities removed 1 million pounds of trash
from local streets, alleys, parks and entire
communities.
ClearWater Conservancy and community
volunteers participated in its 20th annual
Watershed Cleanup Day in conjunction with the
Great American Cleanup of PA. This one-day
event is aimed at removing unsightly littering and
illegal dumping from local watersheds. With the
help of community partners, 521 hardworking
and dedicated volunteers assisted the
ClearWater Conservancy to properly dispose of
over 165,600 pounds of trash from roadsides,
parks, streams and the beautiful Centre County
landscape. Sheetz provided direct cleanup
support of food and beverages.

Thank You to Our Sponsors – We Couldn’t Do It Without You!
In recognition of Earth Day, GIANT Food Stores donated 50
benches made from recycled plastic bags to local organizations
and schools, including 25 benches and $2,500 to Keep
Pennsylvania Beautiful to help with the Great American Cleanup
of PA.
This donation is part of GIANT’S ongoing Bags to Benches
initiative and its overall commitment to the environment. GIANT
has set a goal of getting to “zero waste” by 2020, diverting 90%
of waste going into landfills and incineration through the
expansion of recycling programs.
Sheetz provided direct program support and participated in
cleanups, plantings and educational events across the state.
“Sheetz is thrilled to partner with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s
Great American Cleanup of PA,” said Ryan Sheetz, Director of
Brand Strategy. “Being connected in the communities in which
we operate is an important part of the Sheetz DNA. We
encourage our local team members to get out in their local areas
and not only be ambassadors for Sheetz, but good members of
the community. We believe that what we do now for the state of
Pennsylvania is important and will impact future generations.”
