General Information

Protocols regarding Covid-19 continue to be fluid at this time. Depending on the mandate in effect during the 2020 Great Basin Youth Rodeo Challenge face masks and social distancing may be REQUIRED for all participants, family and spectators. Please be prepared to adhere to whatever mandate are in effect. The Great Basin Youth Rodeo Challenge is being held in conjunction with the Tri-County Fair and Stampede and the Bulls and Broncs performance during Labor Day weekend. Preliminary rounds will be held on Friday, September 4th at 6:30 pm with the advancing contestants moving on to the finals on Saturday, September 5th at 5:30 pm. This event is open to young buckaroos between the ages of 2-15. Boys and girls will compete against each other in Stick Horse Barrel Racing, Dummy Roping, Lead Horse Barrel Racing, Mutton Bustin', Calf Riding, Mini-Bull Riding, Mini-Bucking Horses, Wild Pony Racing and Junior Barrel Racing. There will be limited entries available in each event. Please see rules sheet for applicable rules for each event.

All completed notarized entry forms and fees will be processed on a first come, first served basis until an event is full. Additional entries received by the Fairgrounds office will be placed on a waiting list for the event and the Fairgrounds staff will contact you to notify you if you are on the wait list. If a participant fails to check in by 6 pm on Friday, those on the wait list will be eligible to participate in an available spot on a first come, first served basis. All completed notarized entry forms and fees MUST be received by the Fairgrounds office (regardless of being mailed, dropped off, etc.) NO LATER THAN 4 pm on Thursday, September 3rd. Late entries will NOT be accepted. Each participant will receive one complimentary child and one complimentary adult ticket for the Great Basin Youth Rodeo Challenge on Friday evening. Additional admission tickets will need to be purchased in advance at participating locations or at the gate for attendance to the event. All Participants MUST check in at the Fairgrounds office prior to 6 pm on Friday in order to obtain their complimentary tickets and be directed to their event location on the track in front of the main arena. Failure to do so will result in a waiting list contestant taking the place of those who have not checked in for the event and refunds will not be given for failure to check-in / notify the Fairgrounds office.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Contestants who move on to the Finals must wear complete western attirefor the Saturday Bulls and Broncs.

The top 4 in Stick Horse Barrel Racing, top 4 in Lead Horse Barrel Racing, top 4 in each class of Dummy Roping, top 6 in Mutton Bustin', top 4 in Calf Riding, top 4 in Mini-Bull Riding, top 4 in each class of Mini-Bucking Horse, top 5 Junior Barrel Racers and top 4 teams in the Wild Pony Race will compete in Saturday's Bulls and Broncs Rodeo. The contestants competing at 5:30 pm will also earn one complimentary child and one complimentary adult ticket to the Bulls and Broncs Rodeo. Finalists will need to check in at the Fairgrounds office on Saturday between 4-5 pm prior to the event. Silver Buckles will be given to first place winners in each event and each age group (total of 14 buckles) at the end of each final.

Event Rules

Contestants in the Stick Horse Barrel Racing, Dummy Roping, Lead Horse Barrel Racing, Wild Pony Racing and Junior Barrel Racing will be timed/scored for awards. Wild Pony Racing Teams should include 3 team members; the mandatory rider (age 12 and under), one adult (age 16 & over) and any other team member to complete the team. Two people must hold the pony and the rider (who must be 12 or under) must get on the pony, hold on and ride the pony for two jumps. They will be judged for time from the time the gate opens to the time the rider and pony jumps twice. Junior Barrel Racers must be able to ride a horse without assistance. Mutton Busters (limit 30), Calf Riders (limit 8), Mini-Bull Riders & Mini-Bucking Horse Riders must ride for 6 seconds. If the rider falls off before the whistle is blown, the rider will be timed for awards. The winner will be determined by highest score. If no one scores, the winner is the one who stayed on the longest. Mutton Busters are not allowed to use spurs or ropes and cannot ride backwards. Contestants must be ready to ride when their name is called. If contestant fails to ride within 2 minutes, animal will be turned-out. Dummy Roping rules for all Participants:

ꞏ 60 sec. limitꞏ Any participant who makes a catch after crossing the yard line will not receive the points for the catch. ꞏ Points will be awarded as follows:

Two horns – 3 points Neck – 2 points Half-head (Neck/one horn) – 1 point

2 - 5 Years Old:ꞏ 3 legal catches - horns, neck & halve headꞏ Fishing the loop allowed

6 - 9 Years Old:ꞏ 3 legal catches - horns, neck & halve headꞏ No fishing allowed

stꞏ After 1 legal catch, will be moved back one yard and will hold this position for remainder of time limit.10 - 12 Years Old:

ꞏ Horns onlyꞏ No fishing allowed

stꞏ After 1 legal catch, participant will be moved back one yard per legal catch up to time limit. If time remains after all legal catches have been made, the participant will be moved forward at the same intervals.

Officials' decisions are final. The Rodeo Committee strongly recommends contestants wear helmet and safety equipment in rough stock events. Contestants must provide their own equipment.
